Sights to See Florence offers many attractions year-round — like towering sand dunes and golden beaches, the famous Heceta Head Lighthouse and Sea Lion Caves — along with special festivals and other annual events. RHODY DAYS — SINCE 1908

The 112th annual Rhododendron Festival, May 17-19, 2019, takes place in Historic Old Town, where a carnival lights up the Port of Siuslaw Boardwalk. The festival also includes a car cruise and show, 5K run, vendor fair, art and flower shows, the West Coast’s third olderst floral parade and youth activities. This year’s theme is Coastal Canvas, which celebrates both the area’s natural beauty and the artists who capture it in unique ways.

HECETA HEAD LIGHTSTATION

Perched on Heceta Head, 13 miles north of Florence, Heceta Head Lighthouse is a working lighthouse that was built in 1894. The 56-foot-tall landmark stands 205 feet above sea level. Its Fresnel lens beam can be seen up to 24 miles offshore and is the brightest light on the Oregon coast. Near the lighthouse is the old assistant lighthouse keeper’s house, which has been turned into a bed and breakfast. This year, the lightstation is celebrating 125 years.

SEA LION CAVES

An iconic Oregon coast tourist destination since 1932, Sea Lion Caves, 11 miles north of Florence, draws upwards of 150,000 visitors annually to view one of the largest sea grottos in the world, home to the only known winter rookery of Stellar sea lions. Take the elevator down 208 feet to view the cave and its colony of sea lions. There also is a whale watching deck just below the gift shop that provides a 20-mile view out into the Pacific, perfect for spotting migrating grey whales.

Coos Bay, the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area offers a wealth of recreation for everyone, from those who enjoy a quiet hike or horseback ride and the possible sighting of wildlife to those who enjoy an action-packed adventure on two or four wheels. A variety of outlets also lead to area beaches and hiking trails.

WHALE WATCHING

People come from all over the world to learn about the gray whales that travel along the Oregon coast each year. Whales are visible from Oregon’s shores all OREGON DUNES year, including the Spring & From Heceta Head to Fall Whale Watch Week.

Each weekday, the Friends of Florence van offers a free shuttle service for cancer patients receiving radiation treatments from health centers in the Willamette Valley, driving from Florence to Eugene and Springfield. For more than 30 years, the van has transported nearly 30,000 patients to their radiation treatments at the Willamette Valley Cancer Institute and Research Center in Eugene and Oregon Urology Institute in Springfield. The volunteer-driven van, which relies on individual contributions and Van Fans fundraisers to cover costs of gas and upkeep, stops for patients in Florence, Mapleton, Walton,
