or the fourth time, Three Rivers Casino Resort is opening the doors to its event center, 5647 Highway 126 in Florence, for the free Florence Community Job Fair. This year’s fair is on Thursday, March 7, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. “This event is for job seekers of all ages,” said event organizer Pam Hickson, recruitment specialist for Three Rivers Casino Resort and the Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians (CTCLUSI). “It’s an assortment of vendors who are actively recruiting, along with resources for job seekers and even volunteer opportunities.” This year has 40 confirmed vendors — nearly double the first year’s total of 24. “Nearly 80 percent are returning vendors, but there are quite a few that are new. It’s a diverse mix of trades and industry, retail, healthcare and more,” Hickson said. Plus, it’s a mix of local businesses and opportunities as well as more regional options. Nearly 350 people attend the event each year. “It’s a ‘one stop shopping’ event that is free and open to the public — a great opportunity to meet one-on-one with locals who are currently hiring and actively recruiting for the upcoming season,” Hickson said. According to the Oregon Employment Department, employment in Oregon is on the rise, with 28,200 new jobs added between January 2018 and January

2019. Many of those positions were added in the transportation, warehousing and utilities fields, along with construction and manufacturing. The Florence Community Job Fair has several trucking companies included in the vendor list. “It’s an industry lots of people don’t think about,” Hickson said. “But with the low unemployment rate, that means they are actively recruiting.” Three Rivers Casino Resort is also actively recruiting, with positions available in its restaurants and facilities and even on the casino floor. “March is when we start gear-

ing up for our busy summer season,” Hickson said. “We’re actually looking to hire table games dealers. There is a four-week paid training that goes with that.” Other opportunities are more specific to youth. The south doors to the event center will be open to allow access to those under 21 years old so applicants can hear about Job Corps, community colleges and other educational options. This year, the ASPIRE program is bringing three rounds of Siuslaw High School students as part of a field trip. Other students are also able to drive themselves. Besides the actively recruiting

employers, WorkSource Lane and Goodwill Job Connections will have resources for those beginning or continuing their job search. This includes tips for writing a résumé and cover letter and ways to prepare for an interview. As people meet and interact with the vendors at the event center, they can proceed to a bank of computers to complete online applications or fill out their paper applications. “It’s a chance to meet one on one and put yourself out there,” Hickson said, adding that serious applicants should treat the entire fair as an interview. tendees at the job fair are encouraged to bring several copies of their résumés and wear professional attire. Hickson added, “It creates this seamless process for people to find out about a job, turn in their résumé and fill out an application. It’s a one-stop shop.” The fair is made possible through Three Rivers, which started the job fair four years ago to get everyone in the same room. People who were looking for jobs, a new direction, internships or volunteer opportunities could meet with businesses who had job openings, education information or other options. “Local businesses and applicants both know the challenges when applying for jobs and locating resources as well. The Community Job Fair brings all those parties and resources together to form a network in our local community,” Hickson said. The event also formed stronger connections between the coastal community and the greater region as people learn about volunteering and ways to get involved in the community. This works for people of all ages and backgrounds. “Our 40 vendors are excited to talk one on one with people and connect them with resources,” Hickson said. “The Community Job Fair is free not only for the attendees, but for the vendors. It’s not just for job seekers.” For more information, visit the Community Job Fair Facebook page or stop by www.threerivers casino.com.

How to be a team player Networking strategies for the digital age The ability to communicate, interact and work collectively with others is both a professional and personal asset. But in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises. According to Monster. com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player. That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills. So what does it mean to be a team player exactly? The following are some traits of team players. • Meets deadlines: People working together on a project have their own unique responsibilities regarding such projects. It’s important that the end result is produced on time; otherwise, the entire group pays the price. Employees who care about their teams consistently meet their deadlines, making things easier for their fellow team mem-

bers as a result. • Adapts easily: Team players are willing to adapt to change and take others’ suggestions. Professional flexibility and openness to ideas are important traits, as you just may learn something from team members when you try things their way. • Listens attentively: In order for a team to function, every member has to listen to what his or her coworkers are saying. This also includes being receptive to criticism without lashing out. Listening can sometimes be more important than speaking. • Communicates clearly: Team players effectively communicate their thoughts and ideas. This includes using language that is constructive, honest and respectful. • Participates frequently: Even when his or her own work is done, a team player does not shy away from taking on the tasks of others to ensure a project is completed on time. This also can include offering tips or pointers. • Happily shares the spotlight: Never the glory hog, a team player is content to stand in the spotlight alongside coworkers. Team players make sure everyone is involved and recognized equally, and even take their share of the blame when things go awry.

Networking has long been a way for men and women to expand their professional horizons. Networking can keep professionals abreast of the latest goings-on in their industries and provide both immediate and long-term benefits. Like many things in the business world, how people network has changed in the digital age. Embracing that change and making it work for you will likely involve changing how you network. Embrace professional social media Social media may not have been around the last time you looked for a job, but professional social media sites such as LinkedIn are a vital component of networking in the digital age. If you haven’t done so already, establish a LinkedIn profile so you can begin connecting with other professionals in your field. Personalize your connections The days of sharing a post-work drink with a colleague may be over, but networking in the digital age need not be impersonal. When using professional networking sites such as LinkedIn, personalize the messages you send to other professionals when inviting them to join your network. Use the message to briefly introduce yourself and explain your connection before explaining why you want the person to become part of your network. Welcome any questions and warmly thank them for their time.

The right ways to update a résumé How to ask for a letter of recommendation The job market can be competitive, as new graduates flood the field each and every year. Many job seekers may benefit from revamping their résumés before beginning their search. It’s not uncommon for recruiters to receive thousands of résumés for each job opening they post, and the sheer volume of applicants can make it difficult for job seekers to get their résumés seen. In such instances, job seekers must take steps to tip the odds in their favor. By following these guidelines, job seekers may have a better chance of getting their résumés into the right hands. • Put a professional purpose. Modern standards may suggest that listing a career “objective” is old fashioned. However, it is helpful to customize your résumé so that it is geared toward the position for which you are applying. A career objective may reflect how you are a strong candidate for each specific job you apply for. Use some specifics that tie into to the particular job or company and you may catch the hiring manager’s attention in the process.

• Embrace keywords. Many employers now use application tracking software to sift through the scores of résumés that are submitted for each opening they post. Keywords make it easy for employers to sort through thousands of résumés. The right keywords will flag your résumé and increase your “relevancy score” in the main HR/recruiting software programs available. Adapt your résumé for each application you submit. Use some of the words listed in the initial job posting and description. In addition, look at similar job postings and incorporate some keywords listed in those ads so that you have all the bases covered. • Trim the fat. Less is often more regarding résumés. List

all of the pertinent information, then go over the résumé again and again and cut out any irrelevant information to remove clutter. Only include information that is relevant to your career goals. • Highlight what you have done. Rather than listing every job responsibility and position in chronological order, use a résumé to highlight specific career accomplishments. This is a time to be your biggest fan and tell the world all of the great things you have accomplished. Remember to include evidence to back up the claims. According to a 2015 survey by CareerBuilder, employers say that résumés that include links to a candidate’s portfolio, website or blog garner more atten-

tion than résumés without such links. • Put your own voice in the résumé. Rather than using standard verbiage on your résumé, personalize what you want to say. Hiring managers want to hire a human, not a machine. When speaking about yourself, be sure to use strong action words that define your skills even further. HR professionals cite terms like “managed,” “achieved” and “improved” as examples of positive, assertive words. • Set yourself apart. Engage in activities that can improve your marketability. Be sure to list training, coursework, degree, or volunteer efforts that pertain directly to the skills needed for the job to which you’re applying. These additions can tip the scales in your favor over another applicant. Plus, adapting a résumé as one ages and has gained experience can be advantageous. A well-crafted résumé is one way for professionals to demonstrate how their skill set is current and adaptable to today’s business climate.

Things to know about returning to school Adults who decide to return to school after a long layoff are following a popular path. According to Education Corner, a growing number of career colleges and vocational training schools now offer degree programs geared toward working adults. People return to school for various reasons, including the chance to learn new skills or further develop their existing skills. Some return to school

because they are changing careers, while others may have lost a job or desire a promotion and feel that attaining a higher level of education or new skills can make reaching that goal more likely. Adults who hope to return to school might be surprised to learn that the educational landscape has changed considerably since they were last in a classroom. • College students are no

longer just young people who begin pursuing degrees right out of high school. In fact, the number of adults returning to the classroom has increased considerably, often making younger students the exception rather than the rule, says financial planner Straighter Line. According to the U.S. Department of Education, college students 25 years or older comprise 40 percent of all students enrolled in college.

• Those thinking about returning to school are urged to fill out free applications for student aid to see if they qualify. Grants and scholarships may be available, and some employers may match funds or offer some assistance to finance job training courses. • Many schools now offer online courses that make it easier for working adults to pursue their degrees.

Knowledge, skills and personality can get students far, but having the right people in their corners can open doors for new opportunities that students and other new job seekers might otherwise never have considered. Perhaps this is why recommendations are so coveted when applying to schools or to jobs. Asking for a letter of recommendation is something that should be done with forethought. The correct approach and proper timing can mean the difference between receiving a recommendation or not. Who to ask The first step is to decide who you want to ask for a recommendation. Select those mentors who know you well or can validate how you performed or improved in a previous job or class. Opt for a teacher whose class you recently took so the recommendation reflects the student you are today and not the student you might have been when you were younger. It can also help to ask for a recommendation from someone who has sufficient experience. Their input may carry more weight than someone whose career is less accomplished. A wellestablished teacher who leads a class that pertains to your academic goals is a good fit. Remember to consider the requirements of the position as well. People frequently ask for recommendations from specific people, such as a teacher in a certain subject or a previous mentor.

tance of the recommendation by making it a personal request. Schedule an appointment with the individual and discuss why you believe he or she would be the right person to provide the recommendation. Remind the person of your attributes and point out something that exemplifies your skills. Sp e a k i ng f a c e - to - f a c e shows respect and gives you the advantage to make your points personally, rather than through email. Make the process easier Provide all of the necessary items to help the person along. This can include a brief résumé, academic progress report, required forms, and so on. Also offer any college- or employerdirected requests. As the deadline looms, offer concise reminders that you will need the recommendation. Offer to pick it up personally. Make copies or scan and save the original just in case a mix-up in the admissions office occurs. Ask early Teachers may be inundated with college letter recommendation requests around application deadlines and at the end of semesters. It’s better to leave plenty of time than to put teachers under pressure. The same rule applies to anyone else you’re asking to write you a recommendation.

Recommendations are a key part of landing a job or being offered acceptance into a college or university. Asking the right people early will translate into recommendations that paint Request in person an accurate picture of apUnderscore the impor- plicants.

Consider these in-demand professions

The days of spending an entire career with one company are a thing of the past. According to data published in The Balance: Careers, the average professional switches jobs 10 to 15 times in his or her lifetime, while the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that the average employee tenure in 2016 was 4.2 years. Understanding which fields have a high rate of growth can ensure people make smart choices when switching jobs. The following are the top-rated careers, based on data from the BLS, U.S. News & World Report and Glassdoor. • Mathematicians earn an average salary of $106,000 per year. Mathematicians use statistical theories to help com-

panies in various industries make informed decisions. • Marketing managers guide how a particular company or industry presents itself. They also analyze how campaigns and efforts have succeeded or failed to improve market share. A marketing manager earns an average of $85,000. • Actuaries employ mathematics and economics to help corporations predict and manage risk in their organizations. The field is expected to increase by 22.5 percent by 2026. Actuaries earn a median salary of $101,000. • DevOps Engineer: Thanks to the ubiquity of digital technology, professionals who can work with software developers and system operators to over-

see code and IT infrastructure are in high demand. These workers command, on average, $105,000, and as computer-based industries only continue to expand, so do the career opportunities. • Optometrists: S e e i n g clearly and maintaining proper visual health is important. Optometrists can earn $106,000 a year. • Nurse anesthetist: Several different careers in the medical field are booming, and nurse anesthetist is one of them. These medical professionals administer anesthesia to patients undergoing surgery and monitor vital signs to maintain patient safety. An average salary of $160,000 can entice registered nurses to go

through the extra schooling to become anesthetists. • UX designer is a graphic designer, interior designer or architect who helps improve the usability, accessibility and enjoyability of tangible and digital products based on user experiences. Salaries vary depending upon the specific niche, but can average $90,000 annually. • Physical therapist: These health care workers earn an average of $85,000 and help people decrease physical pain and improve mobility through rehabilitative exercises. When considering changing careers, people may want to consider various professions that are currently booming.

Finding a new job in your later years Update your skills in a secure job industry Unemployment isn’t easy for anyone, regardless of their age. But unemployed men and women over 50 may find it especially difficult to find work. In a 2016 analysis of government figures, the Schwartz Center for Economic Policy Analysis at the New School estimated that the jobless rate for workers 55 and older in August of 2016, six years after the Great Recession, was nearly 9 percent. At the time, the national jobless rate hovered around 5 percent. Unemployed people over 50 who are struggling to find work can consider the following strategies as they look to rejoin the workforce. • Revisit your rÊsumÊ. Unemployed people over 50 have no doubt updated their rÊsumÊs to reflect their most recent professional experience. But they may need to trim some of the fat in regard to their work life 10 or more years ago. Today’s hiring managers may only be concerned with recent experience that illustrates skillsets that are relevant to today’s jobs. Those over 50 may con-

sider their experience from 20 years ago invaluable, but if that experience does not meet the specific needs of the jobs they’re now seeking, then they should remove it from their rÊsumÊs so hiring managers can quickly access the more relevant information from their work histories. • Embrace 21st century job hunting. Finding a job nowadays is unlike job hunting in decades prior, and wholly different from how people over 50 looked for jobs upon beginning their professional lives. Networking can mean the difference between unemployment and landing a job. Go to job fairs attended by hiring managers and join professional organizations that host events where professionals in your field can gather. • Turn your age into a positive. People over 50 should accept the likelihood that their new managers and/ or hiring managers will be younger than them. When interviewing for a job, they should make an effort to showcase their enthusiasm

about working with and learning from younger colleagues, while also noting their desire to commit longterm to a company. Some hiring managers may view older applicants as potentially more reliable than workers simply looking to gain some experience in a particular industry before moving on to the next opportunity. • Make use of your existing down time. Another strategy unemployed men and women over 50 can try as they look for work is to make better use of their existing downtime. Enrolling in online courses can give prospective employers the impression that applicants over 50 are both tech-savvy and willing to learn new things. Each of those things can help men and women over 50 overcome any unjustified, tech-related stigmas that hiring managers may attach to older job candidates. Finding work after 50 is not always easy, and job seekers may need to adjust their approach before they can get back in the workforce.

The last several years have seen a series of economic ups and downs. Managing careers amid such instability has been challenging for many individuals, but professionals looking for more security can take steps to find careers that promise more long-term stability. Focusing a job search on industries that have shown strong growth and the ability to ride out waves of economic turmoil can tip the odds in your favor. Certain industries have better long-term employment outlooks than others, and men and women looking for more stability should consider these industries when pondering their next career moves. Accounting Thanks to ever-changing financial policies and greater scrutiny placed on lending practices and bookkeeping, accounting jobs remain solid career choices. Jobs in accounting can range from entry-level to more advanced (and more lucrative) positions requiring certification or a secondary education. Builders With more money injected into the economy, homes and businesses can once again resume growth. Laborers with skills in construction, masonry and residential building, and structure contractors can count on steady employment. Computer Systems

Computer systems analysts and programming experts are highly coveted in today’s digital world. Many company operations are completely overseen by relatively autonomous computer systems. As technology keeps changing, employees who are able to stay abreast of the changes will only grow more valuable. Environment Clean-energy and other environmental jobs may currently make up a small percentage of employment, but reports from the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicate jobs in this sector are growing much faster than other fields, including healthcare. Workers ready to get in on the ground level may benefit from opportunities for advancement and the stability of working

in a field that figures to grow considerably over the next several decades. Green jobs include work that is primarily involved in the production of green goods and services, such as renewable energy, pollution reduction and recycling. Green jobs also are those that involve education and training related to environmental compliance. Medicine Financial health does not safeguard people against illness, and health services are needed regardless of the state of the economy. That makes medical careers some of the most coveted and stable around. Healthcare professions can be lucrative, and careers in medicine are not restricted to doctors or nurses. Clinicians, medical imaging personnel and medical laboratory technicians also are needed. The United States Department of Labor lists services for the elderly and persons with disabilities, home healthcare services and other health practitioner positions among the fastest-growing career opportunities. Entering the job market for the first time or reentering it with a new career direction can be intimidating. Focusing education and skills on careers that are proven winners can be the security and confidence boost professionals need.
