f you’ve been living under a yellow brick for the past 119 years, perhaps you’re unfamiliar with L. Frank Baum’s 1900 book, “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.” Possibly, you never saw Judy Garland’s 1939 film, the stage adaptation of “The Wizard of Oz,” or belted out “Defying Gravity” from Stephen Schwartz’ hit Broadway musical based on Gregory Maguire’s book, “Wicked.” Maybe you’ve never heard of the movie version of “The Wiz,” which featured Diana Ross, Michael Jackson and Richard Pryor in all of its late 1970s glory. Perhaps, you didn’t see the recent “The Wiz Live,” a made-for-TV movie, which featured the celebrity talents of Ne-Yo, Queen Latifah, Mary J. Blige and Common. Well, if any of that’s the case, the Children’s Repertory of Oregon Workshops has good news for you! For two weekends in April at the Florence Events Center, audiences can take a journey through the magical land of Oz, as CROW presents “The Wiz.” The story goes like this: Once upon a time, a tornado transports a young girl named Dorothy (Nyah Vollmar) from Kansas to the land of Oz. While trying to find her way back home, she meets a Scarecrow (Cort Waggoner), Tinman (Jonathan Olson) and Lion (William Owens), who are each looking for something very personal to them. When the friends meet the Wiz (Roxi
Early Rhody Show
Clement) and complete their journey, the audience realizes that what they were looking for was in fact a part of them all along. It’s a beautiful story about believing in yourself, the importance of friendship, and the value of home, and it’s one that’s resonated for over a hundred years. “The Wiz” tells the story with an upbeat retro/urban/ soul vibe. CROW promises to do the classic story justice, with high-quality sets, costumes, special effects and much more. The 50+ person cast of all-youth performers have been rehearsing complicated music, dances and scenes since mid-January, and are poised and polished. Popular songs from the show include “Ease On Down The Road,” “Believe in Yourself,” “Everybody Rejoice” and “Home.” CROW Artistic Director Melanie Heard says, “This is absolutely our best show, yet!” — and that’s saying something, considering the non-profit organization has already produced seven mainstage youth musicals, four haunted mazes, a dance showcase, several teen straight plays and three Holly Jolly Follies holiday shows — all of which have dazzled patrons since 2011. To some, it may seem as though CROW has been furiously flapping and is always fundraising. But, despite the ongoing challenges of being a non-
profit arts organization that requires donations, grants, and fundraisers in order to survive, CROW has managed to stay aloft. “It’s important that we provide these first-class opportunities to our local youth,” says Heard. “By giving our kids the very best performing arts experiences, we are teaching them to strive for excellence. Nothing teaches empathy better than the arts! We teach our CROW kids to pour their hearts into a project. If the adults in their lives care about them and care about the quality of the show, then surely they must follow suit. The adults who make up CROW are the very model of hard work, dedication, talent, and love. Through example, we teach our kids that they can go confidently down their own Yellow Brick Road.” The Wiz is offered for six public shows this year, Fridays and Saturdays, April 5, 6, 12 and 13, at 7 p.m., and Sundays, April 7 and 14 at 2 p.m. For tickets and more information, visit www.crowkids.com or call the Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St, at 541-997-1994. Adult tickets are $20, military/senior tickets are $19 (at the box office window only) and youth under 12 are $10. “Come see The Wiz!” says Heard, “Or the Wicked Witch of the West will get ya!”
Rhodies, rhodies everywhere and all for us to see! This year’s annual Early Rhododendron Flower Show should be very interesting for our local rhododendron enthusiasts. Wind, rain, drought, heat, cold, sleet, snow; only the hardiest, most tenacious flowers will shine bright in April.
Join the Siuslaw Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society and area rhododendron enthusiasts to see why Florence is the City of Rhododendron. Admission is free and, as always, plants will be available for purchase after 10 a.m. If you have any questions, call Day Farrald at 541-590-3161.

SEAcoast presents Valse Café Orchestra Seattle’s own Valse Café Orchestra swings into Florence for a night of romantic musical entertainment! This very special event will take place at the Florence Events Center on Wednesday, April 24, at 7 p.m. Come early for the pre-talk, at 6:15. You will want to dance the night away! Valse Café Orchestra originated with a singular goal: to win hearts with postmodern renditions of dance hall classics. Their eclectic repertoire celebrates a romantic mélange of bygone eras. Paris in the 1930s, Hapsburg Vienna, Yiddish melancholy, Gypsy romance and Ragtime Manhattan — different worlds indeed, all connected by the mesmerizing tempo of waltz and the exuberant syncopation of swing. As its name implies, the orchestra typically plays mostly waltzes, but the group’s program usually features a mix of swing
tunes, foxtrots, polkas, two steps and tangoes. “We don’t just play great music exceptionally well,” said our late Artistic Director Susan Balshor, “our goal always is to create romantic evenings of fantasy and pleasure.” Join the group at 6:15 p.m. for the pretalk, then stay for a romantic evening of musical entertainment. SEAcoast Entertainment is an allvolunteer 501(c)(3) bringing incredible music and entertainment to the Central Coast for 38 years. Tickets are on sale now $35 for adults and students $10.

tions. On the cusp of a professional career, these dancers — mostly between ages 18 and 22 — will perform classical, romantic, neo-classical and contemporary styles on this tour stop. The Siuslaw Middle School Advanced Band had a productive day on Feb. 27 at the Oregon Music Educators Association District Festival in Coos Bay. This non-competitive event was a chance for band students to play before two judges and receive helpful advice and constructive criticism. The festival for Districts 7 and 10 was held at Marshfield High School. Despite weather delays, road obstructions, and
a fire drill during their warm up time, the Siuslaw Middle School Advanced Band played well and earned good scores. Director of Bands Chris Rowbotham was pleased with the students’ ability to focus on the music and ignore the distractions. The Advanced Band will perform next on April 29 at the All Bands Concert at the FEC, when students from grades six to 12 will perform. The concert is free to the public.

Bandon Showcase brings warm harmonies from The Sweet Remains
Bandon Showcase presents The Sweet Remains at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 1, at the Sprague Community Theater, 1202 11th St. SW. Celebrating 10 years and over 30 million Spotify plays in 2018, The Sweet Remains is an unusual band on today’s music scene. The band is headed by three gifted singer-songwriters, each contributing to the writing and threepart harmonies that define the band’s sound. Rich Price, Greg Naughton and Brian Chartrand met for a chance jam session in a Rhode Island hotel room in 2008 and instantly recognized a musical blend and kinship. Driven by strong lyrical and melodic writing, their songs easily appeal to fans of modern folkrockers like Jason Mraz, Ray Lamontagne and John Mayer. But it is their lush harmonies that distinguish them from the abundance of guitar-
other acts. People might even know some of their music as it has made appearances in film and TV commercials, including “The Independents,” a musical comedy/drama written by and starring them that has been well received at film festivals. Tickets cost $25 for reserved seating and are available by calling Bandon Mercantile at 541347-4341, going to www.bandonshowcase.org and at the door. Complimentary intermission wine bar and desserts provided by Edgewaters and Coastal Mist.
