SEAcoast presents Olé! Music & Comedy 4th annual Big Wave Poetry Slam

Come let your mind be blown by one of the most original music comedy shows you will ever see — Olé! World Music and Comedy. Featuring amazing Flamenco guitar playing and musical virtuosity of pop, swing, blues and international classics, this show will be full of spectacular fun! Olé! World Music and Comedy performs on Wednesday, May 22, at 7 p.m. at the Florence Events Center, 715 Quince. Come early to get to know this fun group during the preconcert talk starting at 6:15 p.m.. Paul Morocco, Guillermo de Endaya and Marcial Heredia make up this merry trio of Latino guitar players. They present a fresh and exciting blend of Spanish comedy, Flamenco, Guitarras and, of course, their signature ping pong. These three Latin Machos, full of fire, fight for their pride while playing, spinning and throwing their Spanish guitars. They take the audience on a journey ending in a Grand Fiesta!!

Paul Morocco developed Ole! after cutting his performing teeth on the streets of New Orleans. There, he explored his love for entertaining the public, learning the timeless craft of connecting to the audience and developing his unique improvisational skills.

The original Ole! show began at London’s Mime Festival in 1990, and debuted at Edinburgh’s Fringe Festival in 1991, receiving not one, but two awards for the performance. In 1996, Paul teamed up with Guillermo De Endaya and Marcial Heredia. This version of the show plays to enraptured audiences to this day, and has become an international cult hit all over the World. “These three Locos are not only funny, but enormously musically talented as well. Their powerful performance combines frantic and zany slapstick that is almost surreal beyond madness” writes the UK’s The Daily Telegraph. SEAcoast Entertainment presnts ‘Ole!’ as part of its 2018-19 season. The group is an all-volunteer 501 (c) (3) bringing incredible music and entertainment to the Central Coast for 38 years. Tickets are on sale now for $35 for adults and $10 for students.

Florence’s fourth annual Big Wave Poetry Slam, which sees poets travel to Florence from all over Oregon and beyond, will take place on Friday, May 24, at 6:30 p.m. at the Florence Events Center, located at 715 Quince St. Slam poet extraordinaire Jorah LeFleur will return for the fourth time as the master of ceremonies. Known as the “Slam Maven” and administrator and host of the Tsunami Poetry Slam in Eugene since 2006, LeFleur brings her bright, flashy style and a great energy to Florence’s special night of poetry. Slam Poetry is a type of competition where people read their poems without props, costumes or music. After performing, they receive scores (0-10) from five randomly selected judges from the audience. Scores are awarded based on how much each judge likes a poem. Poets are allowed three minutes to read one poem of their own construction, with a 10-second grace period. If the poet goes over time, points will be

deducted from the total score. There will be three appointed time keepers. Florence Big Wave Spoken Word is a group of poetry lovers dedicated to the promotion and enjoyment of poetry in Florence. A part of the Florence Regional Arts Alliance (FRAA), the group hosts the First Tuesday Open Mic plus three competitive events per year: “Big Wave Poetry Slam,” “Love Gone Wrong” and “Spooky Word.” Tickets and pre-registration are available at FRAA, located at 120 Maple St., or online at bigwavespoken word.org. Poets can also register at the event, which opens its doors at 6 p.m. This year’s Slam contest is limited to 20 participants with a $15 entry fee. First Prize $250, Second Prize $100, Third Prize $50. An Open Mic will precede the Slam contest at 6:30 p.m. Audience admission is $10, $5 for Lane Community College students and free for anyone 18 and under.

Spring Dance Showcase May 10 & 11 SHS to award $240,000 in scholarships Dancers of all ages will take the stage at the Florence Events Center on Friday and Saturday, May 10 and 11, at 7 p.m., as CROW presents a mixed genre Spring Dance Showcase. The event is open to the public, and CROW audiences are encouraged to come and support the wonderful performers. “This is an opportunity for the talented youth and adults in our dance community to share their amazing talents, while inspiring and educating the general public and generations of future dancers,” says Melanie Heard, CROW’s Artistic Director, and director of CROW’s “Flight” Dance Team. “Dance is my first love, and will always hold a very special place in my heart.” Heard’s artistic background stems from the genre of classical ballet, which she studied with the Joffrey Trainee Program, Kirov’s Universal Ballet School, Ballet West and Houston Bal-

let. She is committed to bringing that same level of dance professionalism to the local area, and is excited about the future of Dance in the community of Florence. During the showcase, several original choreography pieces will be debuted. Local dancer and teacher Cara Beere will also present a brand-new hip hop piece with the Flight Dance Team. The 2019 Spring Dance Showcase will feature class performances by CROW’s Youth Ballet, Contemporary, and Hip Hop classes, which are choreographed by Mackenzie Calvert, Siarrah Rain and Beere. There will be several mesmerizing

solo, duo and small group performances by CROW students. In addition, local adult dancers will dazzle audiences with exotic and unusual genres. The Tutu Dads will pirouette back to the stage with another epic crowd-pleaser. Last but not least, the Tip Top Tappers and Teen Tappers will perform entertaining tap numbers. All proceeds from the show support the CROW Dance education program, including costumes and scholarships for youth to attend future dance classes and workshops. Adult tickets are $14, military/seniors are $13 (with ID at box office only) and youth (12 and under) are $10.
