Tickets are on sale now for the Friends of the Florence Events Center’s next Wallflowers and Wine event. Artist John Leasure will once again bring his artistic talent and wit to the stage at the Florence Events Center for this ever-popular social art class on Friday, Aug. 23, at 6:30 p.m. Leasure will guide the class through the process of creating your own masterpiece. “This time, we will be painting something new,” Leasure said of his bright and happy sunflower painting called “Sunny Days.” Admission is $45 and gets attendees all their supplies — paint, brushes and canvas — as well as a souvenir wine glass, with choice of beer or wine. Registration for Florence Festival of Books now open It’s that time of year. If you’re an author or publisher who wishes to participate in the ninth annual Florence Festival of Books, held Saturday, Sept. 28, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Florence Events Center, then plan to register soon. Registration opened June 10 and tables fill up quickly — long before the Sept. 1 deadline. The festival is a celebration of books you can actually hold and turn the pages and is free to the public. Large and small publishers as well as fiction, non-fiction and children’s authors are welcome to participate. For authors and publishers, it’s a networking opportunity, and potential authors can discuss their manuscripts with participating publishers.

The fees are: $60 for a single 6-foot table, $75 for a single 8-foot table, $90 for a shared 8-foot table, and $100 for a group of three at an 8-foot table. There is no fee for authors under 18 years of age. Participants keep 100 percent of their proceeds from the

festival. Besides the book fair, there are two events on Friday, Sept. 27. At 7 p.m., bestselling author Bob Welch, award-winning newspaper columnist and author of more than 20 books, including “The Wizard of Foz,” will be the Keynote Speaker. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. From 3 to 4:30 p.m. Friday, all are invited to a free authors and publishers panel discussion. This year’s topic is “The Ins and Outs of Publishing.” The application is available at www.florencefestivalofbooks.org. For more information and Keynote Address tickets, contact the Florence Events Center at 541-9971994 or go to eventcenter.org.

n Sunday, July 14, people from the community are coming together to honor the memory of Leah Goodwin, a major player in Florence’s theater world who passed away in 2018. Presented by “Team Leah,” with the blessing of her family, the Remembering Leah Benefit Performance will take place at the Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St., at 2 p.m. The idea arose from a conversation with 15-year-old Nyah Vollmar, an up-and-coming singer from Florence who has signed on with InRage Entertainment. According to her family, Nyah wanted to hold a benefit show to raise money for the community. Honoring Leah was a natural choice, as Leah’s guidance

helped encourage both Nyah’s career and that of her younger brother, Jonah. Nyah has put together a 60-minute set, featuring some of her original songs and duets with Jonah, her friend William Owens and her former vocal coach Jason Wood. Her single “Empty Spaces” was released at the Florence Events Center in February. Additional songs on her EP with InRage will be released this summer. The show will be open to the public with all donations going to the Friends of the Florence Events Center Leah Goodwin Memorial Fund. The fund helps support the needs of the theater, subject to the approval of the Goodwin family.

2019 Florence Community Block Party The City of Florence is excited to host the 2019 Community Block Party on Friday, July 19, from 5:30 to 10 p.m. in Historic Old Town Florence. Last year’s Block Party celebrating the 125th anniversary of the city’s founding was a huge hit. Hundreds of community members and visitors spent an evening with family and friends enjoying live music, visiting local restaurants and shops and enjoying activities sponsored by area businesses, nonprofits and groups. The 2019 Community Block Party will encourage the community to come together

and enjoy an amazing evening with their friends and family. During the event, the city will be celebrating its second anniversary of being a Coast Guard City, kicking off the Power of Florence on July 20, encouraging exploration of what Florence has to offer, and celebrating summer! The event will provide free live music and activities for people of all ages. Sponsorship and other opportunities are available.
