Quarantine Can you make it out alive? — Scare-CROW Haunted Maze
N
o one knows how or where the virus began. All that is known is that one day, a mob of terrible, bloodthirsty zombies wandered out of the beautiful forest. Slowly, people from all walks of life began to show signs of
infection. Local authorities did their very best to quarantine those who seemed dangerous within the walls of the Children’s Repertory of Oregon Workshops (CROW) Center for the Performing Arts. But there was only one problem: They left the vials of antidote inside! Now, it’s up to you to see if you can make it through the maze of zombies and retrieve a vial of antidote so that you don’t follow the same fateful path. Can you make it out alive? CROW’s fourth annual Scare-CROW Haunted Maze, called “Quarantine,” will be held Oct.26, 27, 30 & 31 from 6 to 9 p.m., with a less scary Family Night geared toward younger kids and big chickens to be held on Monday, Oct. 29, from 5 to 8 p.m. Suggested minimum age for the regular maze nights is 8+, and entry is always at parents’ discretion and at your own risk. Admission for all nights is $6 per person,
per entry. Tickets are sold at the door, and cash only is accepted. This year, CROW is excited to announce Haunted Maze Sponsors. Sponsorship opportunities were made available to local businesses and individuals to help cover costs of props, specialty zombie make-up, construction materials and special effects such as LED fog blasters. 2018 Maze Sponsors include: Angle & Square LLC, Paula Burnette and Dave Hansen, Chad Clement DDS/PC, Handyman 101 Construction LLC, Laurel Bay Gardens, Dan Lofy Construction and Maire Testa. “We have been having a total blast creating the concept this year,” said CROW Artistic Director Melanie Heard. “The special effects, make-up and costume design — and other unexpected surprises — are going to scare even the toughest people. I think this maze is going to be our best one yet.” Last year’s “Nightmares” maze showed so much deadly appeal that over 1,000 guests passed through, traveling from as far away as
I N S I D E
Astoria, Coos Bay and Eugene/Springfield. CROW team members delighted in hearing positive feedback from terrified maze patrons both through social media, and as they exited the maze. Many people opted to go through the maze multiple times, despite the long lines. “CROW strives for exceptionally high production values for every project we produce. The maze is no exception,” Heard said. For more information about the maze, including a list of FAQ’s, visit www.crowkids. com and click on the “Haunted Maze” tab. There will also be on-site food provided by Smokin’ Pops BBQ food truck, and a few other surprises yet to be revealed. Rumor has it that CROW’s Flight Dance Team may even make a spook-tacular appearance. “If you feel the slightest tinge of zombie virus, better hurry over to CROW so we can try to get you a vial of antidote,” Heard said. “That is, if you can survive long enough to retrieve it!”

Gallery One features acrylics, oils by Patricia Stutz
Painting by Patricia Stutz
Artist Patricia Stutz will be the featured artist in Gallery One during the month of October at the Florence Events Center. Stutz is a resident of Reedsport, Ore. Though loving sketching and painting in her youth, she found it difficult to pursue during her years of working and raising a family. After retirement, she rekindled her passion for art. “I am fortunate enough to have a dedicated home studio for my painting and a beautiful state to gather inspirational ideas,” she said. Stutz works many hours in her studio, learning and enhancing her techniques in both oils and acrylics. She studies under several instructors and is currently studying painting with Florence’s John Leasure. Stutz’s preferred subject matter are those things found
in nature, including seascapes, landscapes and the variety of creatures inhabiting them. “I do enjoy sneaking in a rustic cabin or an inviting lighthouse as an addition to any painting,” she said. “My goal is to continue to grow as an artist and a person. I truly believe that by trying hard at one, it only serves to enhance the other.” An Artist Reception for Patricia Stutz is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 19, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Florence Events Center. The public is invited to come and meet the artist and enjoy refreshments, conversations and beautiful art. MURDE R PARTY
So It Goes Coffeehouse presents an original stage adaptation of horror cult camp sensation “Murder Party” by the Lab of Madness. It’s Halloween night in Brooklyn. Chris, a lonesome and unremarkable fellow, finds a mysterious invitation on the street and follows it to what he thinks will be a fun costume party. It turns out to be a lethal trap set by a gang of deranged hipster artists who plan to lure someone to their remote warehouse base and ritually murder them as part of an extreme artistic event to impress their wealthy and sinister guru/patron. As the booze-and-drug-fueled night wears on, rivalries within the group flare and chainsaws rage ... Warning — everybody dies. “Murder Party” is for audience members 18+ and features Amanda McNulty, Michael
Pedder, Joe Allen, Dylon Bessey, Taylor Marchant, Maxwell Freeman, Marissa Marchant and Nothus Rex as Chris the Brown Knight. It is directed by John Beane and Daneal Doerr. Performances are 8 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from Oct. 19 to 31, with two special Halloween performances at 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31. Performances take place at So It Goes Coffeehouse, 190 Central Ave., Coos Bay, Ore. Tickets are $15 and are available at the shop or online at soitgoescoffee.com. “Murder Party” won the 2007 Slamdance festival and was the first film from Jeremy Saulnier and Macon Blair (Green Room, Blue Ruin). So It Goes Coffeehouse previously presented “Pulp Shakespeare” and “Dash Riprock and the Tentacles of Doom.”

Holly Jolly Follies All Cast Meeting FLORENCE—Would you like to become involved in the 2018 Holly Jolly Follies? This year’s Follies is entitled “Starlight,” and the whimsical and poignant theme centers around a star falling from the sky. A little elf discovers it and is distraught that it is not where it is supposed to be. Come along on the magical journey as the Follies elves attempt to place the star back in the sky, amidst shining star performances by Florence’s most talented groups and soloists. The show was written by Florence resident Rose Ellen Jacobson. Melanie Heard, CROW’s Artistic Director and Follies Director, welcomes any interested participants to attend an “all cast meeting” on Nov. 5 at 6:30 p.m. at the CROW Center for the Performing Arts, 3120 Highway 101 in Florence. No audition is required, but the
meeting is so that potential cast members can complete a contact sheet, pick up a schedule, etc. Rehearsals are limited and are held evenings throughout November only. Heard said, “Anyone is welcome to join us and participate in the ensemble numbers. It’s a lot of fun.” Soloist slots are mostly filled. Groups that are interested in being part of the annual show may contact Heard at 541-999-8641 or crowtheatrekids@yahoo.com prior to the meeting. “The Follies are wonderful because the event helps to put our community in the holiday mood,” Heard said. “The Holly Jolly Follies are a true variety show and the 2018 production is sure to steal a spot in your heart this holiday season!” For more information, visit www. crowkids.com.

The selfguided tour begins at any of the 18 participating locations. Be sure to join the tour, as locations will be showcasing some incredible art: Alissa Clark Clayworks, Backstreet Gallery, BeauxArts Fine Art Materials & Gallery, Dragon Art, Florence Events Center, Florence Regional Arts Alliance (FRAA), Frames of Florence, Heffy’s Gallery, The Hideaway Gallery, Old Town Barbershop, Old Town Coffee & Gallery, Novelli’s Crab & Seafood, The River Gallery, Serene Abundance Studio, Silver Lining Boutique & The Gallery Above, Siuslaw Public Library, The Studios at Jayne Smoley Design and The Vardanian Art Gallery. Learn more at 2ndSaturdayGalleryTour.com. Backstreet Gallery In October, Backstreet Gallery is featuring the work of mixed media artist Karen D. Nichols and potter Geraldine McMahan. These two dynamic artists will be celebrated during the 2nd Saturday reception from 3 to 5 p.m. each 2nd Saturday, with food catered by Nosh, wine, music and tons of beautiful, unique art. Nichols is an
award-winning artist originally from Southern California where she was an artist and a teacher. Her unique pieces are executed in a variety of media — bas-relief paper painting, sculptures, watercolor, ink, acrylics and photographs. She has a line of handmade and photographic greeting cards. In addition, she is also an accomplished author. Since moving to Florence in 2001, McMahan has been attending the pottery class at LCC. “One of the things I like most about pottery is potters,” she said. “I love to share ideas and techniques, successes and failures with other potters. Creativity is contagious.” Her pots are all hand built, in both red clay and white clay. “I like to find a basic form that I feel comfortable with and then make variations on that form and experiment with various decoration techniques. Mostly, I just like to get my hands in clay,” she said. Local artists will be at Backstreet Gallery to mingle with the community. Florence Events Center In Galleries One and Five, the Florence Events Center will be displaying “Everything Odd-Umn” and painter Patricia Stutz. Read more on Page 2 of Florence Center Stage (inside). Heffy’s Gallery One of the newest members to the Tour is Heffy’s Gallery, 1856 37th St. in Florence. This gallery features woodcarvings that are exquisite and lifelike. The artist has been developing his own unique style and process for his fine wood art.
BY CURT PETERS

During the month of October, the featured artist in the hallway of the Siuslaw Public Library, 1460 Ninth St., will be Robert Hefty. His work was selected by “People’s Choice” at the Hang it All Exhibit held there in 2017. Hefty, born in Iowa, specializes in oils and creates shapes on canvas using strong colors. Looking at one of his paintings requires concentration and thought. Any storyline stimulated by the art piece must be imagined by the viewer and is of their own making. His work has been shown at the Gallery above Silver Lining Boutique, Oregon Pacific Bank, the Studios at Jayne Smoley Design, Florence Visitor’s Center, Florence Events Center and the Florence Regional Arts Alliance.
The coastal community is invited to view his paintings. In addition, Florence-area residents will be displaying some of their favorite Nativity scenes in the lobby. This special exhibit can be seen in the display case and will give a sneak peek at what will be displayed at the 13th annual Nativity Festival. The Nativity Festival for 2018 will be held Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 and 2 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 2705 Munsel Lake Road. The holiday event is free of charge and children are welcome. Most of the Nativity sets are on loan from local members of the Florence community and surrounding central coast communities. These are cherished pieces that have become part of many family traditions.
