elcome to the ninth annu a l F l orenc e Festival of Books — a book fair for authors, publishers and readers. Here books are celebrated; real books with pages that you turn. We are proud to be welcoming a number of authors who have not previously attended the festival this year. Altogether, 2019 brings more than 70 authors whose writing covers a variety of genres and several publishers ready to talk about their writers’ books. This is also an opportunity to discuss publishing your own manuscript. This free event takes place on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 10
a.m. to 4 p.m. and is your opportunity to meet and speak with the authors of great books: non-fiction, poetry, mystery, memoirs, fantasy and environmental writing, along with fiction for children, young adults and adults. Each book you purchase can be personalized just for you or as a gift for your favorite reader. In addition, the Florence Festival of Books begins on Friday, Sept. 27. Friday events include a panel of representatives from four Oregon publishers discussing “The Ins and Outs of Publishing.” Answer all your questions about the process of moving from manuscript to book. The panel discussion is
from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and is free to the public. At 7 p.m. on Friday, awardwinning Register-Guard columnist and popular Oregon author Bob Welch will give this year’s keynote address. He will also be featured at a book signing after the event. Welch is a speaker and writing teacher who has served as an adjunct professor of journalism at the University of Oregon in Eugene. He is the author of more than 20 books, his latest being “The Wizard of Foz: Dick Fosbury’s One-Man High-Jump Revolution.” Tickets for this
event are just $8 in advance or $10 at the door. All Florence Festival of Books events take place at the Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St. Food is available for purchase during the event. A special thank you to our sponsors for making this year’s event better than ever before. We hope you will come and enjoy. — Co-Chairs Judy Fleagle & Meg Spencer Florence Festival of Books is presented by the Friends of the Florence Events Center and the Florence Festival of Books Planning Committee.

T
he Florence Festival of Books is excited to present bestselling author Bob Welch as the Friday night keynote speaker. Welch is the author of over 20 books, as well as an inspirational speaker, award-winning columnist and writing teacher. He served as an adjunct professor of journalism at the University of Oregon.
Welch will speak at 7 p.m. on Sept. 27 at the Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St. Tickets for this event are $8 in advance, available at eventcenter.org or 541-997-1994, or $10 at the door. His latest book is “The Wizard of Foz: Dick Fosbury’s One-Man High-Jump Revolution,” which was named the Track and Field Writers 2018 Book of the Year. Fosbury was known worldwide as the inventor of the Fosbury Flop high-jump style, with which he won the Olympic medal in 1968. San Diego author Mike Yorkey calls Welch “the most eclectic writer in America” because the Oregon author has written World War II and children’s books, hiking books and collections of columns, books inspired by his favorite movies and plays and books about fathers and sons, sports and military nurses. His book about a heroic World War II nurse, “American Nightingale” (2004), was featured on ABC’s “Good Morning America” and was a finalist for the Oregon Book Award. A follow-up
book, “Pebble in the Water” (2008), amplifies the author’s “American Nightingale” experience from an idea written on a Wendy’s napkin to the four years it took before the book was published. In 2012, his book “Cascade Summer” chronicled his 452-mile hike on the Oregon portion of the Pacific Crest Trail. Articles of Welch’s have been published in more than a dozen books, including seven in the popular “Chicken Soup for the Soul” series. In addition, he has had articles published in such magazines as Los Angeles Times, Reader’s Digest, Sports Illustrated and Runner’s World. Welch and his wife, Sally, live in Eugene. They are the parents of two adult sons and grandparents of five. Welch enjoys sailing, backpacking (he’s walked 1,244 miles of the 2,650-mile Pacific Crest Trail), used-bookstore browsing and University of Oregon sports spectating. Local authors at the 2019 Festival of Books F lorence boasts a number of writers, many of whom are published authors. This year, several are participating in the ninth annual Florence Festival of Books (FFOB) along with their books. And that’s not all! There are two Florence-based publishers who will be there, as well as the Siuslaw School District Writers. These kids show that you can be an author at any age.
AUTHORS • Connie Strome Bradley spent 50 years in hospital nursing and administration, and she has been recognized as Florence First Citizen for community involvement. Her books include “Snowball, the Nanny Goose of Sutton Lake,” “Lulu, the Dancing Snail,” and “Madge and Bill, Barn Owlets,” all illustrated by Carol Unser. Bradley is a co-founder of FFOB. • Judy Fleagle, the other cofounder of FFOB and former editor and staff writer at Oregon Coast and Northwest Travel magazines, has written “Crossings: McCullough’s Coastal Bridges,” “The Crossings Guide to Oregon’s Coastal Spans,” “Around Florence”
and “Devil Cat and Other Colorful Animals I Have Known.” Her latest book, “The Oregon Coast Guide to the Unexpected,” came out December 2018. • Carol Gunderson at 93 is the Gramma Moses of local writers. “The Morning Porch” captures her thoughts as she overlooks Siltcoos Lake, and “Gramma’s Guided Tour of the World’s Greatest Library” explains the Bible for kids. • Ned Hickson, International Book Award Finalist and awardwinning humor columnist, shares his favorite columns in “Humor at the Speed of Life.” And his “Pearls of Writing Wisdom” gives insights for writers from his years as a journalist and editor.
• Jack Karasch’s publications include short stories, poetry, journalism and novels. A world traveler and scuba diver, he has lived in New York, California, Taiwan and South Korea. Currently, he lives on a lake in coastal Oregon. • Tracy L. Markley is a fitness specialist with 25 years in the industry and the author of “The Stroke of an Artist,” “Tipping Toward Balance,” “Stroke Recovery”
and “Your Brain” — plus her latest, “The Power of Your Spine.” Tracy is on the MedFit Education Foundation’s Education Advisory Board. • Sherrie McCorkle says that unforgiveness is destructive in the lives of people. “Hidden Unforgiveness” provides a biblicallybased list and discussion of reasons why learning to forgive one another is vital to people’s spiritual, emotional, psychological and physical well-being.
• Karen D. Nichols’ latest book, “A Name By Any Other,” involves identity theft and is set on the Oregon coast. Like all her books, it contains a dog story, a love story and an intriguing ending. She has also written “Thornton House,” “Unexpected Gift,” “Second Chance Heart,” “Triumph Over Fear,” “The Moral of the Story,” “Roots of an Oak” and “Here, There, Gone.” This author is also an accomplished artist in more than one medium. • Carolyn Nordahl has lived in Florence most of her life and made a career of working for the Siuslaw News. In retirement, she enjoys watercolor painting. Her
book, “Gramma’s Window Shade,” was written as a tribute to grandma Johanna and mother Mildred. It’s the story of her childhood and includes favorite family recipes as well as her own watercolor illustrations. • Richard Nordahl has lived in the Northwest since early childhood. During his retirement, he enjoys fishing, enjoying the out-ofdoors, and writing. His books are related to his dreams — “A Man’s Dream and a Hero Dog,” “The Alien” and “Trapper Fred and the Indian Girl.” After putting the dreams on paper, they were at rest. • Dr. H. Ritchie’s book, “The Kids in Far Left Field,” is about how teachers and administrators bully students. Her teaching career began as a substitute in a variety of school districts. Then as a teacher, she taught in high income and rural schools as well as schools for incarcerated students. She later worked for a state department of education. She has also been an adolescent counselor and learned firsthand of the problems some students face at the hands of their peers and teachers. See local groups & more on Page 6

WRITERS GROUP • Siuslaw School District Writers involves student and adult writers and illustrators under the guidance of Kassy Keppol to produce published books. These student books are sold so that students can have a book signing experience. And the money raised is used for publication of the next book. Many students from first grade through high school have participated in the making of the books.
PUBLISHERS
• Port Hole Publishing’s Ellen Gunderson Traylor is the bestselling author of 20 books, and owns Port Hole Publishing as well as a bookstore in Gardiner. She has published the books of dozens of authors. Her own titles have sold about a million
copies in English, with many foreign translations. She has also taught writing for publication at colleges and conferences. • Watchtower, Bible & Tract Society are part of a publishing organization that prints Bibles and other books as well as two Bible-based magazines, “The Watchtower” and “Awake.” All of these authors will have their books for sale and publishers will have books they have published on display. Any books purchased can be signed and personalized. And, who knows, some of these Festival of Books’ participants may be your friends or even your next-door neighbors. — Judy Fleagle Co-founder and Co-chair Florence Festival of Books

C. EDWIN (ED) FENDER IDYLLIC PERU: From euphoric highs (16,000+ feet)
to depressing lows (life-saving emergency surgery), Ed’s Peruvian experience was anything but routine. With Machu Picchu, the most visited tourist site in South America, as the centerpiece, Ed takes us with him on daily exciting journeys to mountain peaks, dangerous jungles and abandoned Inca cities. This adventure memoir, with over 100 photos, is the next best thing to actually being there!
INFINITE RIVER: Carl Finter, photographer, had a magazine contract to shoot a few hundred shots during a summertime rafting trip down the Rogue River. The longanticipated earthquake on the Oregon coast was only the beginning of a series of events that would threaten his life, bring true love into it, and propel him into deepening mystery and intrigue that would extend millions of years into the past!
ITALY CALLS: Lorenzo Costa is content with his life
C. EDWIN (ED) FENDER has always been a wordsmith.
After 40 years of technical writing, Ed finally retired and focused his writing skills on adventure novels and memoirs. He and his wife, Maureen, live in Eugene, Oregon and have a cottage in Yachats.
in Oregon. That life is turned upside down when the grandfather he doesn’t know calls him to come to Italy to take over his multi-billion Euro company. While en route, he unknowingly smuggles data for arms traffickers. The journey to find his Italian roots and decide whether or not to take over the business leads to romance and an adventurelaced trip through Italy.
The Legend of
Fender’s Garage
A memoir of Loren David Fender by C. Edwin Fender
In The Spooky Forest
THE LEGEND OF FENDER’S GARAGE: After Bob Welch’s Beachside Writers retreat in Yachats in 2010, Ed realized he was the only living person who knew the amazing details of the story surrounding his father’s Garage in the mountains of Colorado. He wrote the memoir because he knew if he didn’t, the story would be lost to history. This memoir has now been added to the Jefferson County, Colorado, Historical Museum. IN THE SPOOKY FOREST is a children’s book
featuring (and written for) three of Ed’s grandchildren: Some strange white thing is moving around in the “Spooky forest” in Yachats. The children are very curious and want to know what it is. They convince Grandpa to take them in to find out what’s going on! Be careful, Grandpa!

Unforgiveness hidden in our memories is like an iceberg—90 percent is buried beneath the surface in our minds. From that vantage point, unforgiveness wields a destructive power over our lives, and we don’t even know where it comes from. These unresolved issues are selfinflicted barriers to our personal relationship with God and the people we love. Hidden Unforgiveness dives deep into the Scriptures in a way few studies can match—and yet, the text is easily understandable, clear, and life changing. The author examines biblical principles vital to spiritual growth and shares insights revealed in the original Hebrew and Greek texts. Licensed family therapist Cyndie Quinn says, “This is a powerful resource for experiencing a healthier mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual state of well-being.” Search on line: Hidden Unforgiveness Sherrie McCorkle
S
herrie McCorkle and her husband, Roger, have been married 54 years and are 52 year residents of Florence, Oregon. She says, “The Lord interrupted my comfort zone in Him, and invited me to follow His lead through an intensive study of His Word to expose the bondage and destructive nature of personal unforgiveness in the heart. The book is an avenue of dialogue to renew minds with God’s Word, to follow the lead of the Holy Spirit, and to be set free to become all we are designed to be in Christ.”

“Set in the 1980s in the rural community of Bidarkee Bay, Alaska, a fictional area the size of a small state with a population of barely 20,000, Wander is the story of Patrice “Pete Nash, a young broadcast reporter who finds herself facing the winter alone after her husband, Nate, accepts a job on “the slope. As Pete pursues the next big breaking news story, she strikes up a friendship with the new guy in town, the Ivy League-educated Ren, who recites poetry and lives in the family-owned, vacant inn. Their friendship offers a glimpse of a different kind of life - one that seems to Pete to offer everything marriage to the country-raised Nate does not. But unbeknown to Pete, Ren has come to Alaska for his own dark reasons - to end his life. By the time, Nate returns home, their lives have been irrevocably changed. One man is dead, two others missing and a third forever lost to them.
