Rhody Days prepares to celebrate Florence’s Coastal Canvass G reat pageantry, civic pride, fabulous flowers and festival fun will mark the 112th annual Rhododendron Festival in Florence May 17 to 19. Rhody Days is Oregon’s second-longest running floral festival. The Florence Area Chamber of Commerce, with its team of dozens of volunteers, puts on the big event each year. The highlight will be the grand floral parade at noon on Sunday, May 19. It begins at 27th Street and Highway 101 and travels about three miles to and through Historic Old Town Florence. This year’s grand marshal is the Heceta Head Lighthouse, which is celebrating its 125th anniversary in 2019. This year’s Florence Rhododendron Festival officially begins with the coronation of Queen Rhododendra and the King of the Coast on Wednesday, May 15, at the Florence Events Center at 6:30 p.m. Members of the court have been selling festival pins for $3 to raise money for scholarships. The pins are also good for $1 off a bowl of chowder throughout May at participating restaurants around town. The list includes Bay Street Grille, Clawson’s Wheelhouse, The Hukilau, The Firehouse, ICM Restaurant and Traveler’s Cove. The Davis Shows’ Carnival, now it its 50th year in Florence, also opens May 15 at 3 p.m. It continues throughout the festival at the Port of Siuslaw Boardwalk. The street fair, beginning at the corner of Bay and Laurel Streets in Old Town, is expected to feature more than 30 vendors and exhibitors. The street fair will be Friday from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday’s schedule is packed with fun for everyone. The 40th annual 5K Rhody Run & Walk starts at 9 a.m. at the Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St. Participants can preregister at EclecticEdgeRacing.com. The annual kid’s Junior Parade, coordinated by the volunteer firefighters of Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue, is Saturday at noon. There will be games with lots of prizes at the Kiwanis Kids Games at the end of the
parade route at 27th and Oak Streets. The American Rhododendron Society’s Siuslaw Chapter will again host the annual rhododendron and azalea show and plant sale at the Florence Events Center on Saturday and Sunday. The exhibition is open for anyone to display their flowers. Those wishing to enter their prized cultured or local wild rhodies must register Saturday, May 18, from 7 to 9 a.m. Judging will start promptly at 9. The show will open from 1 to 5 p.m. after completion of the judging, and reopen at 10 a.m. Sunday. The plant sale starts at 10 both mornings. There is more information on the plants and the event at siuslawars.org. Also at the Florence Events Center will be the annual Florence Regional Arts Alliance Rhody Days Arts Festival. It takes place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. The annual Coast Radio KCST/KCFM classic car cruise is Saturday from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Staging takes place at the Rhody
Cruisers’ Classic Car Show’s annual shown-shine at 21st Street and Highway 101 in the Grocery Outlet and City Lights Cinemas parking lot. The Do-Wah Riders, the nationally-touring high-energy country band with a Cajun twist, perform at 4 p.m. Saturday at the park behind Ixtapa Restaurant at 10th Street and Highway 101. They’ll also perform at the KCST cruise and the parade. The multi-award-winning “ultimate Elvis,” Justin Shandor, performs Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the FEC. Tickets are required. The chamber is seeking volunteers for a number of other fun opportunities throughout the festival. To volunteer, contact the Chamber at info@FlorenceChamber.com or call 541-997-3128. The Rhody Express, Florence’s public transit bus, will offer free rides within city limits Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 a.m. The Florence Area Chamber of Commerce’s executive director, Bettina Hanni-
gan, says this year’s festival theme, “Coastal Canvas” highlights the Florence area’s arts community and opens the door showing off the area’s natural beauty alongside the beauty crafted by local artists. “We live in an open canvas and we can use what is around us to build upon and thrive as a community. We have outstanding visual arts, culinary arts, theater/performing arts, and more here in the Siuslaw Region. It’s all part of why we are known as Oregon’s Coastal Playground,” she said. For more information on the 2019 Rhododendron Festival, contact the chamber at events@FlorenceChamber.com, 541997-3128 or florencechamber.com.

RHODY WEEKEND IS FILLED WITH ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS & FAMILIES
Beginning with the opening of Davis Shows Northwest Carnival on Wednesday afternoon at the Port of Siuslaw parking lot in Historic Old Town, Florence transforms into a city full of youth activities during Rhody Days. Youth are spotlighted during the Rhododendron Court Coronation on Wednesday evening and are welcome to participate in the Rhody Run and Walk. Many of the Rhododendron Festival’s
activities are geared toward families — but two are specifically for the festival “juniors,” the Junior Parade and Kiwanis Kids Games starting at noon on Saturday. Set up begins at 11 a.m. at Miller Park for the annual Junior Parade, sponsored once again by Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue. All entries are welcome for the parade. No pre-registration is necessary. Expect fun costumes, gymnastics, bicycles, motorized vehicles and at least one
fire engine. The parade begins at noon and runs up Oak Street from 19th to 30th streets. RHODODENDRON FLOWER SHOW SET FOR MAY 18-19 If April showers bring May flowers, an abundance of blooms is in store for the annual Rhododendron Festival this year. As a result, local rhododendrons and azaleas are in prime shape for this year’s 47th annual Rhododendron Flower Show. The community is encouraged to participate by bringing in as many trusses as they wish. There are a few basic requirements to help win a ribbon or even a trophy. First, pick the most upright truss with the most florets open. Also, look for the best foliage to compliment the flowers. Lastly, enter only one of each variety and entrants must have owned the plant for at least six months. All the rhodies have a certain classifica-
tion in which they should be shown. There will be many knowledgeable people on hand to put flower trusses in the right category. Those interested in entering this year’s flower show should bring their entries to the Florence Events Center between 7 and 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 18. Judging commences at 9 a.m. and will take approximately three hours, at which time doors are open to the public until 5 p.m. On Sunday, the show is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Plants can be purchased both days from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Please join us and enjoy the wonderful world of Rhodies. For more information, visit Siuslawars. org or call Day Farrald, 541-590-3161.

RHODY RADIO ALL WEEKEND LONG
C
oast Radio has been part of the Rhody tradition since the local station began broadcasting in 1988. Participation in the weekend events and coverage of Florence’s largest annual festival has always been part of the station’s commitment to its community and listeners. Tune in to Florence’s locally owned-andoperated radio stations, KCST (106.9 FM) and KCFM (104.1 FM/1250 AM) where you can find out what’s happening and when during the 112th Rhododendron Festival. “The station has organized and sponsored events such as the Saturday car cruise and provided live coverage of the Grand Floral Parade for more than two decades,” says Coast Radio General Manager Jon Thompson. “You’ll find our staff at most of the events during the weekend.” Coast Radio’s on-air staff will broadcast from various locations all weekend, giving listeners on-site insights from the carnival rides and midway, bustling Bay Street, and the Old Town Vendor Fair. Other live coverage includes Saturday’s 5K and 10K Rhody Run, the Junior Parade, and news and interviews from the Elks Lodge chicken barbecue and pie sale. “Our stations are great companions for residents and the Florence area’s out-oftown guests to get the latest on local events, discover local resources, and get the most current daily news, weather and sports,” said Thompson. Saturday’s live coverage concludes with the KCST Classic Car Cruise and oldies broadcast from Old Town. Coverage resumes just before noon on Sunday with the Grand Floral Parade and updates from all over town. Coast Radio not only broadcasts the annual car cruise, it organizes and hosts the entire event with the help of the Siuslaw Valley Firefighters Association. Registration for the KCST Classic Car Cruise begins at 8:30 a.m. during the BeachKomber Car Club’s Show and Shine in the Grocery Outlet and City Lights Cinemas parking lot at 21st Street and Highway 101. Registration is required for all cruisers and entries are limited to the first 150 registrants of 1976 and older model vehicles. As part of its sponsorship of the Classic Car Cruise, KCST donates 100 percent of the registration fees to the Siuslaw Valley Firefighters Association.
“ We ’ v e been honored to work with and contribute to the firefighters association during the past 21 years on this popular Saturday evening event,” noted Thompson, who also acknowledged the strong sponsor support from ACR Automotive, Lofy Construction, Coast Insurance Services, Central Lincoln P.U.D., Shervin’s Tire and Automotive, Leisure Excavating, County Transfer & Recycling, Mercer Lake Resort, Regency Florence, Foglio Drop Box Services, 101 Mini Storage and Aero Legends Bi-Plane Rides. Staging for the Cruise begins at 5 p.m. at the Florence Christian Church at Second and Ivy Streets. This year’s KCST Classic Car Cruise will begin at 5:30 p.m. and retrace the Old Town loop until 8 p.m. Coast Radio will have its mobile broadcast unit set up in Old Town on Maple Street, at the intersection with Bay Street, at the south end of the vendor fair. News Director George Henry and noted classic car expert Mike Groshong will play top hits from the 1950s and ‘60s while they highlight the cars and in-
terview their drivers. KCST’s live coverage of Sunday’s Grand Floral Parade begins at 11:45 a.m., with “float-by-float” descriptions of entries from the reviewing stand at TR Hunter Real Estate, between 17th and 18th streets on Highway 101. The Parade Broadcast is sponsored by the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Sponsors and Underwriters. W.G. Peterson Woodworking and TR Hunter Real Estate will once again erect the parade broadcast booth for KCST onair personalities George Henry and Calista Cates. The station’s broadcast team will provide commentary including background and insights on the parade’s floats, bands, and equestrian, motorized and commercial entries, as well as the keynote dignitaries and personalities.

Classic cars prepare for Rhody Days Car Show
Preparations for the 27th Rhody Days Car Show and Shine are underway. This is Florence’s longest running car show and a big draw during the Rhody Days festivities. On the morning of Saturday, May 18, you can see a wide variety of Classic Cars and Trucks 1979 and older, including a few British Cars and usually a couple of military vehicles. This is a judged event, with the award ceremony beginning at 1:30 p.m., and will be held in the Parking lot for City Lights Cinemas and Gorcery Outlet, located at 2066 Highway 101. “This car show, with its convenient location, is a great activity for people of all ages,” said Joe Scalera, one of the BeachKomber Car Club members who has been volunteering for this car show since its beginning. The central location provides easy access for all spectators to enjoy the cars, listen to the DJ playing classic songs and partake in the raffle, which always has a great array of prizes to win. This year includes several gift certificates for lodging in the local area. “As the years go by, car ownership has greatly increased for the ladies. It has been fun to watch the women bring their cars in
and show them. Husbands and wifes now have their own cars. They park next to each other and enjoy hanging out and talking about classics,” Scalera said. The BeachKomber Car Club stated they could not thank each of the businesses enough for giving up their parking lot for the day so the event can be held. These buisnesses include: Florence Shipping Solutions, The Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles, Habitat For Humanity Restore, Focal Point Optical, City Light Cinemas, Grocery Outlet, McDonalds, Pizza Hut and Knecht’s. “This show always has a nice turnout of spectators and a wide range of classics to enjoy,” Scalera continued. “Many members of our community show their cars at this event, and there are lots of entries from neighboring states.” T-shirts and dash plaques are available at the show. This year’s logo features rhododendrons, a military jeep and a yellow Chevrolet Bel Air. To buy a shirt up early, go to Shervin’s Automotive, located at 44th Street and Highway 101, or Twin Lakes Store, located three miles north of Florence on Highway 101.
If you have a classic car you want to show, there is a preregistration and mini show and shine on Friday, May 17, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Additional registration is done the day of the show. The registration booth opens at 8 a.m. on May 18, and the show starts at 10. Registration is $20. For more information, call 541902-0916 or email JeanetteMScalera@gmail.com.

ReVision Florence construction impacts to be low on Rhody Days The ReVision Florence Streetscape Project construction is well underway. The contractor will be working Monday through Wednesday of the week leading up to the Rhododendron Festival (May 13-15). Crews will not be working Thursday, May 16, through Sunday, May 19. Crews will work through Wednesday, May 15, to prepare the construction zone for the Rhododendron Festival. This will include the reopening of both southbound travel lanes on Highway 101 and both westbound travel lanes on Highway 126. Within the work zone, the contractor will still have the outer shoulder closed to vehicles (no on-street parking) on the westside of Highway 101. Open trenching will be temporarily filled with gravel for the Festival weekend. Pedestrian routing cones and barricades will remain in place to protect pedestrians from the hazards. People are encouraged to be cautious in the entire corridor as the area will still
be a construction zone despite the work crews and equipment not being present. Parade spectators will be able to view the parade on Sunday from both the sidewalks and the closed highway shoulder, similar to previous years. The city asks the public not to move the cones during the parade as they will be needed at their designated locations immediately following the parade when traffic is returned to both sides of the highway. Following the Rhododendron Festival, construction crews will return Monday, May 20, to complete the sidewalks and curbs on the westside of Highway 101. The lane closures and traffic control devices will return through the end of May and be removed again for Memorial Day weekend. After Memorial Day, work will move to the eastside of Highway 101. Find out more about ReVision Florence at www.ci.florence.or.us/urbanrenewal/revision-florence.
