Zero Waste Week
M
apleton’s Farm to Table class just made their last visit of the year to Mapleton Food Share. The students have volunteered at Food Share once a month all school year. They have helped the food bank in many ways. Usually you can find them out in the garden, planting, weeding and harvesting, as well as turning compost. But when it’s rainy, there is still plenty to do inside. They have cleaned throughout the building and, on May 21, they spent their time repackaging bulk food into family-size amounts. At the end, the tables were covered with a mixture of flour, cocoa and sea salt, which the students cheerfully cleaned
up as well. The students earn community service hours as part of Mapleton School District’s Beyond Me program. — Submitted by Elisa Gray, Resource Teacher at Mapleton School District

n April, students at Siuslaw Middle School \ participated in a nationwide activity sponsored by NOAA called Zero Waste Week. This coincided with Earth Day on April 22. A single-use plastic bag drive was held during this week and students collected over 2,000 single-use plastic bags. The mountain of bags collected represented a small number of the single-use plastic waste that goes into our land and oceans. The bags collected were taken to local area recycling stations. Students also collected
trash and cleaned up school 2nd Destiny Hammond grounds on the middle 3rd Daniela Hernandez school campus. Summer Theater Camps to be filled with music, magic Now is the time to sign up for CROW’s Summer Theatre Camp sessions for youth ages 3 to 18+. This is the ninth year for Children’s Repertory of Oregon Workshop’s exceptional summer arts education program, held at the CROW Center for the Performing Arts, 3120 Highway 101. This year’s first two-week camp is “Song and Dance Camp” and will take place July 8 to 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This camp is perfect for kids 6+ who love to sing and dance and want to strengthen these skills. During these fun and fast-paced two weeks
taught by Jason Wood and Siarrah Rain, campers will learn several song and dance routines. No experience is required. There will be a free showcase on July 19 at 3 p.m. In addition, campers will also perform at this year’s Power of Florence event on July 20 in the parking lot of Grocery Outlet. The second camp is “CROW School of Wizardry, Mysticism and Theatrical Arts” and will take place July 22 to Aug. 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This session will be taught by Melanie Heard and Genevieve Meltzer.
Campers will learn how to properly deliver a magical chant and practice proper wand movements for turning their parents into toads. Then, they’ll create their own magical shield symbol to represent their unique creative abilities, and find their spirit animal. There will be a free showcase at 3 p.m. on Aug. 2 for family, friends and the public. Also offered is CROW’s audition-only Advanced Acting Program, which runs Aug. 5 to 17. CROW takes special pride in the work it does with local teens and young adults.
This year’s program will be taught by Melanie Heard, and a wonderful guest teacher from Southern California, Diane David. This year, the Advanced Acting Program students will focus on creating and presenting a comedic and/or dramatic monologue that is deeply personal to each participant, with an ultimate goal of publishing a book of the students’ finished work. The teens will perform their new original works for the public over the weekend at the CROW Center for the Performing Arts, with two shows, Friday and Saturday, Aug. 16 and 17, at 7 p.m.
Lastly, CROW will offer three Saturday “Day Camps” on July 6, Aug. 3 and Aug. 31 from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. These high-energy camps designed for “Baby CROW” kids will feature arts, crafts, music, dance and more! Day camps are suitable for ages 3 to 6. Participants must be potty trained and mature enough to handle the camp environment. In addition to summer camps, CROW will continue to offer a variety of dance classes, which are held weekday afternoons after camps and can be found on the “Classes” tab
on the CROW website. Dance offerings include ballet, jazz, musical theater dance, contemporary/lyrical, stretching & conditioning, and more. Financial-need based scholarships are available for classes and camps. The firm deadline for summer camp scholarships is June 14. The online application is at www.crow kids.com/summer-camp. It’s important to note that regular camp applications must also be in by June 14, or there is a $15 late fee. Camps are already filling up, so if you’re thinking of signing up, don’t wait.

Offerings will include everything from Mozart to the Beatles to Broadway, with a few surprises tossed in just for fun. Solo voices, duets, and of course, the rich choral harmonies of the Siuslaw Blue & Gold Choir will be showcased. im Pickell chose high school senior Davina Galli and high school junior Elissa Hurley as the Artists of the Month for Creative Arts 2. They are both students at Siuslaw High School and have promising futures ahead of them. Davina won first place at the Fresh Impressions Art show this year for her sculpture of a chameleon. Elissa won second place at the same event for her scratchboard drawing of a lemur. Davina really enjoys Creative Arts 2 because Mrs. Pickell “is letting us be more creative with our art this year. She gives us some topics and then we do what we want.” Elissa says, “I am the one that talks a lot in that class. The atmosphere is very loose and you can just kinda do your thing. I just like art in general — doing it, learning new things and practicing new skills so that I can be amazing.” Davina mainly talks “to Elissa in that class, we are in our own little world.” Her favorite project has been the self-portraits, “not because it is me, but because we could add so much to it.” Elissa agreed. Since the students could to their own thing, “they were all completely different. There was a criteria but we could still do a bunch of different things within the criteria. It was nice.” Besides making art, Elissa also en-

while in Mexico.” This summer, Elissa plans to get a job and spend more time doing personal art. After high school, she is “planning to major in a language and minor in art, or the other way around. I don’t know yet. Then I could be a translator and a part time artist. Once I make enough money I could live off my art.” Both Davina and Elissa have a passion for art that will not diminish any time soon.
Audition June 15 for ‘Flight’ Dance Team The Children’s Repertory of Oregon Workshop’s (CROW) Flight Dance Team was formed in 2017 and is nearing completion of its second full year. On Saturday, June 15, Flight will be holding auditions for its annual roster. New and returning dancers are asked to audition to either win or keep their spot on the team. Flight receives tremendous praise from the local community, and has performed for many organizations and events, as well as each year in the Holly Jolly Follies. “Being selected for the Flight Dance Team is a huge privilege,” said CROW Artistic Director and Flight Director Mel-

anie Heard. “The team has come a long way in only two short years, but there’s always room for improvement and growth.” Heard plans to push dancers to explore new styles and to improve upon dance technique, precision and emotional expression onstage.
The 2019-20 Flight audition will take place at noon at the CROW Center for the Performing Arts, located at 3120 Highway 101. Interested students should wear dance attire and bring ballet or jazz shoes for the audition. A dance combination will be taught. Dancers must be 11 years and older and hold some previous dance experience. Flight team requirements, including cost, participation expectations and schedule, can be found at www.crowkids. com under the “Flight Auditions” tab. Questions can be emailed to Heard at crowtheatrekids@yahoo.com.
