Joint Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony I would like to congratulate all our new Australian citizens who took part in the very special and successful North Metropolitan Zone joint Australia Day citizenship ceremony at Kingsway on Tuesday. Jointly held by the Cities of Wanneroo, Joondalup and Stirling, the event saw more than 2600 people taking the pledge to become citizens in what was the biggest citizenship ceremony ever held in Australia. This remarkable ceremony brought thousands of people from different races, cultures and backgrounds together to become Australians and once again brought national attention to the northern corridor of Perth. Our newest citizens represented almost 100 countries from around the world including the UK, China, Kenya, Bangladesh, South Africa and Zimbabwe – truly highlighting what a multicultural society Australia is.

Opening of Craigie Leisure Centre outdoor 50m Pool and Water Playground The new outdoor 50m pool and fantastic children’s water playground at Craigie Leisure Centre will be open to the public on Sunday, 7 February from midday with the Splashdown Family Fun Day opening event.

Construction on the aquatic facilities has finished and they will cater for families, social and competition swimmers, schools and community groups as well as meeting the needs of the wider community. The outdoor extension at the leisure centre will be a wonderful addition to Craigie and will strengthen its reputation as one of the most outstanding facilities in Perth.

As part of its commitment to becoming a Waterwise region and due to State Government requirements, the City of Joondalup is reducing and monitoring its groundwater use for irrigation. All Local Governments have a restricted allocation of groundwater they can use every year and this is regulated by the Department of Water to ensure WA water resources are adequately maintained. If moderate restrictions are put in place now the likelihood of total water restrictions, which have been in place in other parts of Australia in particular Queensland and Victoria over recent years, will be reduced. The City is closely monitoring all its parks, which will be ongoing to assess the effect of the modified water reduction strategies. For more information on the new City’s irrigation and watering scheme, visit the City’s website www.joondalup.wa.gov.au or call 1300 369 972.

Glen Cowans’ photographs Naturaliste Marine Discovery Centre 2 December – 31 January From 2 December until the end of January, in the foyer of the NMDC, there is a free-of-charge exhibition of Glen Cowans’ photographs. Glen is one of Australia’s premier underwater photographers. His images show in almost scientific detail the incredible patterns and textures of nature. His photography reveals miniscule marine life like feather worms only a few centimetres across, or tiny coral polyps within huge reef systems. Other photographs show underwater landscapes or the play of sunlight on a sandy seabed.

MAYOR’s / COUNCILLOR’S COLUMN: 350 WORDS

Mayor’s Column – Troy Pickard Joint Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony I would like to congratulate all our new Australian citizens who took part in the very special and successful North Metropolitan Zone joint Australia Day citizenship ceremony at Kingsway on Tuesday.

What’s on in Joondalup
