Sense of Tet 2021

Xin Chào...! Wishing you a very warm welcome on behalf of all the Hosts and the Turtles at Six Senses Con Dao. The period of Tet is the most important event on the Vietnamese calendar, and we are honored to wish you “Chuc Mung Nam Moi” as we welcome the Year of the Ox together in 2021. Our Tet program is filled with experiences, excursions and dining options, to ensure you make the most of this most auspicious time on Con Dao. Here’s to a peaceful & healthful 2021, from Six Senses Con Dao! Be inspired, be kind, be blessed! Marisa Ferreira Fernandes General Manager

The Year of the Ox It is said that Ox ranks second among the Chinese zodiacs because it helped the Rat but was later tricked by it. The myth goes that the Jade Emperor declared the order of zodiac signs would be based on the arrival orders of 12 animals. Ox could have arrived the first but it kindly gave a ride to Rat. However, when arriving, Rat just jumped to the terminus ahead of Ox, and thus Ox lost the first place. In Asian culture, Ox is a faithful friend that made great contributions to the development of society. Like the ox, people born in the Year of the Ox are industrious, cautious, hold their faith firmly, and always glad to offer help. (*) Years of the Ox include 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009, 2021, 2033... (*) source: travelchinaguide.com

What is Lì Xì? Lì Xì or Lucky Money is given by adults to younger people and children in red envelopes. Lucky Money is always given in even denominations since odd numbers are considered bad luck. Not too surprisingly, this is typically a favorite part of Tết for most children.

Why red and yellow are lucky colors? The Vietnamese use vibrant reds and yellows to decorate their homes. These colors will remove bad feelings and substance from their households. This will provide good luck during the transition from the old to the New Year. Yellow represents the soil and is associated with earthliness and centeredness. It is also associated with gold, wealth, and royalty. Red represents prosperity, goodness, happiness. In addition it contains links to strength, power and vitality. It is known to have the power to push evil and bad things away.

Why do Vietnamese people visit the cemetery before Têt Paying homage to one’s ancestors is another important aspect of Tết. The Vietnamese people believe that their deceased ancestors will visit the family during these times. So they would set up decorated alters at home or at the cemetery. Beautiful trays full of fruit, flowers, candles and incenses are placed, symbolizing good luck and prosperity. The night before the New Year, families perform a ritual where incense sticks are burned, inviting the spirits to join them in celebration. In Con Dao Island, Hang Duong Cemetery is the largest and most famous memorial cemetery. Many Vietnamese and war veterans often travel here during Tet times to pay homage to the fallen heroes, among those are Vo Thi Sau, and pray for an auspicious New Year.

Why do Vietnamese people visit a pagoda /temple on Têt? Đi Lễ Chùa – Visiting Pagoda during Tet is also very important for Vietnamese people. There, people would wish for health, peace, success, and wealth. One of most famous temples where people in Con Dao Island often visit is the Van Son Pagoda, a hilltop and scenic pagoda surrounded by green forests and mountains. The local people also visit Madam Hoang Phi Yen temple to express gratitude and pray for the New Year.
