- As the first large commission AZP received that allowed possibility for a spatial political statement, Yokohama Port Terminal, was definitely interpreted as a place for public gathering. - The topological continuity of the two projects (the thesis utilizing ramps, and Yokohama through landscape) hints their common birthplace. - A careful look at Zaera-Polo’s “A Scientific Autobiography” reveals his interests while he was studying at the GSD, he describes himself as truly invested in neo-Marxist urban theory and in Kwinter’s inclusion on philosophical terms into the academic world of architecture. Both issues engaged in each of the projects. - He also discloses an “aversion to the political ideology that goes beyond its application to architecture” [Politics of Envelope] portraying architecture as the fundamental and only agent of appropriate political change.

munch museum oslo-norway

It is rare for an architect to have his/her thesis almost transpire into reality. Although unbuilt, the Munch museum in Oslo, Norway was a commission that maintains the same stream as his thesis. Besides just location, the flow is similar through wanting to create a social platform for the public. The building’s ability to manifest itself into a device that creates a magnetic field of attraction for people from different backgrounds, therefore promoting diversity and public interaction along the harbor. low2no helsinki

2009 The Dee and Charles Wyly theater would have to be the most striking built project in Joshua’s portfolio that encapsulates the architectural motives of his thesis. Both sharing almost similar programs, the most noteworthy element would be the common integrity of each and that is a pure dedication to dynamism.

dee and charles wyly theater

Both the Opera in Norway and the theater in Dallas share a minimally designed translucent/perforated steel skin. Joshua’s desire in both was to “unveil the spectacle to the public” and to “educate the public by revealing the guts”.

By designing a performance machine. The Wyly theater is equipped with an elaborate system of winches, pulleys, lifts, tracks, and catwalks to allow the structure’s reconfiguration from a proscenium stage to a thrust or flat floor. The idea of dynamism is reinforced through a transformation of program within. Through this inventive technology an intrinsically democratic and malleable architecture is allowed.
