RESIDE ACTIVELY Efficiency via maximum of physical Activities

GSAPP Advanced Architecture Design Studio Tutor: Prof. Marc Tsurumaki Individual Work Duration: 2016/09-2016/12

Starting from the twenty-first century, an increasing portion of youth and adults in the United States are concerned with obesity which results from lack of physical activities. A narrow and closed space, along with an elevator, leaves residents staying still from the entrance and eliminates their motivation to be active inside the building. At the same time, there is an apparent recognition of relationship between lack of physical exercises and fitness, and corresponding inefficiency generated in terms of medical cost and other qualification of public costs associated with poor health. In this building, different functions are arranged along the central circulation system in terms of its internal variation. Lower levels are mostly connected by ramps with different slopes, which is suitable to different activities such as walking, walking dogs, running. As a result, diversity can be achieved within the end-to-end connectivity and interaction is enhanced.

Increasing trends in obesity prevalence among adults aged 20 and over and youth.

Taking more physical activities in your residential building may be inefficient in the currently, but it is no doubt efficient in the long run.

The site locates in midtown Manhattan, with a tunnel right beside its north side.

One of the principal sights for thinking about efficiency in high-rise housing is an organization of vertical circulation. A typical response is to simply minimize it, consolidate elevator cores and try to find the most efficient way of arranging staircase. In my project, however, I propose to take advantage of circulation and create opportunities for physical activities, not just purely for physical benefits, but for social activation and interchange that it sponsors.

CONCEPT GENENRATION

Step 1: Original Stairs

Step 2: Stairs into Ramps

Ordinary high-rise building arranges functions regularly, providing efficiency but losing diversity and various experiences.

If the slope of the stairs (1:2) can be decrease to 1:8 or even less, ramps are generated to have multiple circulations for residents.

Step 3: Ramps into Platforms

Step 4: Various Slopes & Spaces

Some ramps go wider to be platforms, which can hold more activities including social and physical ones.

The slope of the ramps are various to encourage multiple physical activities. Spaces between ramps can also be used for mixed functions.

The circulation promotes efficiency because it allows for more physical and social diversity inside the building. In a word, the circulation system is not traditional circulation minimization which targets merely space allocations, but an achievement of optimization which let everything happen and is supposed to play a multifunctional role in a neighborhood.

Residents in the project will have sufficient external spaces with rich experiences along circulation. Programs of various functions, including physical, social and commercial activities, are assigned in the project. The project also offer a great opportunity of communication with the external environments via viewpoints and vertical public terraces.
