Alluvial Islands Pampulha Lake 2012 advanced studio/ Barbara Hoidn
Three comparing photos took from view 1 to view 3 marked on the map below. Located in the northern region of Belo Horizonte, Pampulha emerges as the legitimate representative of modern architecture of the 40s. Over the years, Pampulha assumed his natural vocation for tourism and recreation. The richness of the architectural complex attracts thousands of tourists. Sedimentation together with water pollution problem from the river mouth color the west side of this artificial lagoon. The water is too shallow that a big piece of island will show up if the water
level is low. To solve the problem, some are planning to reclaim all western part of the lake, but I found something valuable behind the dirty water surface. It is the power of the nature, how natural landscape change from time to time and how nature collect sediment in its own way. Thus, the basic concept is to BUILD ON A DYNAMIC CHANGE.

The natrually formed island is the part of the landscape. No more design will be applied on this piece of land, but just waiting it to grow. The designed landscape begins from a group of artificial island as seeds and grow with the phenomenon of natural island agglomeration. Islands are arranged based on the anticipation of where to grow and where to erode. Building complex carefully touch on these islands or bare water surface and open toward dynamic chang strategically.
Concept The concept is to carefully put the ephemeral landscape and eternal conference center together. The goal is to not only create a single poetic moment, but also transite the stories to future.

Years later...
Years, years later... It doesn’t matter whether the landscape will grow exactly in my anticipation. But nature can start to tell its own vibrant story and people can live in this story.
Building Strategy The building design began from an exploration on sections. Based on the position and surronding condition, different building part have its own response to the landscape, the nature light, light reflection from water, and rain water, to create a series of moment relatively.

SEA LEVEL RISING
HURRICANE HISTORY
Concept When sea level will rise 15ft above Galveston Island, how human defend our land from catastrophe. A 15ft high sea wall could be the best option. But, what if tide can make another 5ft unpredictable sea level changing, or if hurricane can lift water up to an extra 18ft? I propose to rebuild a more flexible city structure. Contrast to recent way of defending sea level rising, a new type of 3D city pattern and waterfront landscape structure allow water flow though to exhaust wave energy.

6FT INUNDATION WITH HRRICANE
The Galveston city now is not ready to face the sea level rising, not even the further catastrophe like hurricane. On the contrary, new city grids and coastline landscape system provide such a kind of possiblity that the city will be survive from catastrophe.

PHASE II FOR 9FT INUNDATION
Lift up ground to develop new commercial and residential area where new pattern of city grid will override on landscape. Water will flow through under it.
PHASE III FOR 15FT INUNDATION

The Competition The earily idea Bow Street Hotel in the competition was considering new addition part as several boxes connected by path and bridges. The spatial quality was highlighted by the central courtyard with screen and randomly organized balconies and bridges components. The company won this competition in 2011 which was the first architectural project designed by a Chinese firm in London. The Construction is due in 2014.
Drawings Updating the drawing immediately after any design changes happend is one of the major task when I was in this group. Since this is a renovation project, sometimes changes would affect the demolishing process, so the demolishment construction drawing should be updated simultaneously.
ground floor plan
Demolishing Plan Besides the construction drawing, set of demolishing plan is prepared to show the structures need to be removed and new walls being proposed.
Courtyard Study & Rendering One of the major works of mine in NHDRO is exploring the spatial quality of the biggest courtyard. The work is basically trying to develop different envelop strategies, balcony types, skin pattern, material, and shading conditions. The two options below are what the client choose for further development.
The Courtyard addition - Option 12
The Courtyard addition - Option 20
Reinterpretation of the traditional brick faรงades of the existing buildings. Dual tones of massing of the new additions. The luster of copper and bronze will draw light into the create depth and diversity across the faรงade composition.
Model Document Setting
Integer Hotel on Tian-Mu Mountain senior studio/ Shanghai Jiao Tong Univesity
Instead of a building being an independent structure in the landscape, it is an integral part of it. But how to still maintain the intergrality of building itself rather than normally several pieces of geometric form? Building should TOUCH ON THE MOUNTAIN.
All 80 rooms insert into mountain in a precise position where they halfly connect with ground to reduce the cost of construction. The result shows up as a rhythm on the lakeface facade.
By introducing water on the top surface of every floor, I garantee the best spatial quality of each room. View out from the window, water on roof connects with the lake as a coherent whole.
