Windows are often used to create connections between the indoor and the outdoors. Not only to pass natural light, but most important for people is to have “ a view “.

Different types of window and opening show that they pass natural light to the room, but they do not have good quality of view.

“The street without windows is blind and frightening. And it is equally uncomfortable to be in a house which bounds a public street with no window at all on the street.” A Pattern Language . Christopher Alexander, et.al.

“The sight of action is an incentive for action. When people can see into spaces from the street their world is enlarged and made richer, there is more understanding; and there is the possibility for communication, learning” A Pattern Language . Christopher Alexander, et.al.

At present, most modern buildings are often built with dense of volume and function, thus with limited concern for natural light and view. Their character of detached building create so many negative [abandoned] spaces. There are opposite effect of window/opening placement to the street/outdoor area. 1. No connection. People feel unsafe, discomfortable, and disoriented. 2. Limited visual connection. Safer, more comfortable and more oriented. 3. Strongest visual connection. The visual connectivity also increase the spatial quality between indoor and surrounding environment.

When we were inside the building, we felt as we are outside. The transparent facade and skylight create strong visual interaction between inside and outside of the building.

Colors can create conditions that can cause fatigue, increase stress, decrease visual perception, damage eyesight, increase possible worker errors, and negatively affect orientation and safety. “...It is not the color of the things, the surfaces, which make a place warm or cold, but the color of the light.” A Pattern Language . Christopher Alexander, et.al.

>> Operations People always prefer to sit near windows or openings which have views to another adjacent spaces. They want to be a part of the surrounding environment. Thus, the openings or windows as medium of visual connectivity is crucial because it works as interaction means between the spaces. This spatial behavior is extremely depend on the pattern of the openings or windows. Our operations is to measure this medium to see the important of visual connectivity related to the spatial use and human senses stimulation. We will compare different buildings according to this.

>> Tools Colored filters absorb light and transmit the light they don't absorb. Differentiation of colors that would otherwise appear as the same tone of gray is the main purpose of colored filters with black and white film. Filters are very useful in interpreting colors into their equivalent grey tones. So by applying a certain color of filter, we can emphasize the opaque and transparent of objects.

Based on the criteria, the preliminary result of measuring visual connectivity between Umweltbundesamnt building and IHK building are : Umweltbundesamt has stronger visual connectivity based on the percentage level of opening at the facade, distance and intensity level of materials.
