Building Success Behind the Camera in the Television & Film Industry
FYI
Headmaster’s Message Greetings to every member of the St. Johns Family! We just closed the books on the 62nd year at St. Johns Country Day School, passing a number of milestones along the way. We celebrated the Class of 2015 as St. Johns 60th graduating class. Mrs. Fisher asked that I stop the graduation ceremony briefly to recognize Collin Hudson – who by luck of the alphabet – just happened to be the 2,000th student to receive a St. Johns diploma! Several of our hardworking faculty reached noteworthy milestones of their own – including Dean of Students “Coach” Mike Hilliard eclipsing the 30-year mark and Assistant Headmaster Mary Virginia Fisher surpassing the 40-year mark!
Summer 2015
Saying goodbye to another crop of graduates can be bittersweet for those of us who make a living in the education game, but it is even more difficult to say goodbye to some of our dearest friends who also happen to be some of the most revered and well-loved faculty members, including College Guidance Director Rod Cox (after 26 years), Grade 1 teacher Phala Anderson (25 years), and Grade 5 teacher Martha Morgan (21 years). There is no doubt that filling the shoes of these St. Johns legends will be a daunting task, but reinforcements have already been called up and we plan to “take the field” next fall with a cadre of eager new teachers who are poised to carry on where these titans left off!
CONTENTS
I am pleased to report that 57 members of the Class of 2015 received college scholarship offers totaling more than $4.8 million, thus providing further evidence that St. Johns remains an outstanding investment in a young person’s future. As is normally the case, many of our best students will stay in Florida to take advantage of Bright Futures and various merit scholarships offered by Florida schools such as UF, FSU, USF, and Miami, while others will travel to far-flung places such as Colby College (ME), Cornell (NY), Duke (NC), Wake Forest (NC), University of Virginia, Fairfield (CT), Seton Hall (NJ), University of Colorado-Boulder, DePaul (IL), The Citadel (SC), and University of Hawaii-Hilo. While we are thrilled to see our students wander far from their alma mater, we do hope they will return now and then to take part in the rich variety of exciting alumni events organized by our redoubtable Director of Alumni Relations, Gayle Garrison (St. Johns ’94), along with Mr. and Mrs. Fisher.

ALUMNI STORIES
Building Success Behind the Camera in the Television & Film Industry By Gayle Garrison, Director of Alumni Relations A good story can become even more compelling through the setting of the scene by the storyteller. Whether on screen, stage, paper, or canvas, capturing the viewer and pulling them into the story is a true art form. On the screen, storytelling depends on the look and sound of the characters, the clothing, the scenery, the props, the camera angle, the music, and more.
Interestingly, when each of our featured alumni was asked what one word or words best describes what St. Johns meant to them, they responded “foundation” and “preparation.” Learning a wide variety of subjects and skills has helped them in a diverse and ever-changing profession. Their talent is well-respected and honored by others in their industry.
At St. Johns, students are taught to use various media to engage in the craft of storytelling. Therefore, it is no wonder that we have had so many alumni go into these types of roles in the television and movie industry. They may not be the one on stage or in front of the camera, but their contribution to the story is invaluable.
Whether it is for purely entertainment purposes or to shed light on a controversial issue, the following St. Johns alumni have made a name for themselves in the television and film industry based on their skills and professionalism.
Mark Mori ‘67
film industry unless you have a strong passion plus an innate talent because it is so difficult to achieve success in the industry.
A great documentary starts with a great story. But a great story doesn’t necessarily make a great documentary. Hundreds of hours of film are shot, countless hours of research completed, and many hours of crafting and editing the film by skilled directors, researchers, editors, and others all working together to shape a story with a specific message. Mark Mori became a documentary film producer because of his deep passion for the subject matters combined with a natural ability and a love of the creative process of storytelling. In fact, Mark warns against getting into the documentar y
16
While at St. Johns, Mark was a good student and was active in many extracurricular activities including Chalice, Student Council, Honor Court, J-Club, and Surfers Club. He says that he “developed great friendships, had wonderful teachers, and participated in a wide variety of activities that prepared me for life in many ways.” Mark especially credits his English and Latin teachers with helping him become a creative and strong writer. As a young man in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Mark grew frustrated with the injustice and corruption that he saw around him. The opportunity to make a documentary film about a nuclear power plant in Georgia that was polluting the area came together quickly and Mark ventured into his first documentary film. In that first film, Building Bombs, his motivation was to expose what he saw in an effort to make the world a better place while fulfilling his creative ambitions. That film was nominated in 1990 for an Academy Award.
Mark continued to focus on momentous issues and he received an Emmy Award in 2000 for the television documentary special, Kent State, the Day the War Came Home. Most recently he produced and directed a documentary film about the life and cultural influence of pin-up model Betty Page. He is currently
developing a wellness travel series for PBS and will soon commence a streaming documentary series hosted by Alec Baldwin. Mark was recently honored as the school’s second inductee into the St. Johns Arts Hall of Fame (see Spring Fling article).
Rebecca Brillhart ‘95 Rebecca Brillhart is passionate about intimacy and truth in the human condition, as well as justice and compassion for all living things. These themes are naturally integrated into her work as a film maker and artist as an extension of her beliefs. As editor of the Chalice while at St. Johns, she developed a sense of the power that someone in charge of producing a creative work has over the process. That person has the ability to shape and craft the message. Rebecca was a lifer at St. Johns who was incredibly respected by teachers and fellow students alike. She is especially grateful for the academically rigorous environment that St. Johns provided which she says prepared her well for university and her career. As an “outside the box” thinker, Rebecca feels that St. Johns struck a healthy balance, giving her the structure to explore her interests, while also keeping her grounded and connected to the social fabric of the school. Teachers were especially keen to help her explore creatively and she specifically noted Mrs. Culbert, Mrs. Petska, Mrs. Townsend, Mr. Warner, and Miss Perkins. In Grade 9, she began taking pictures for the yearbook and developed them in the darkroom which became like an office. Rebecca went on to earn a B.F.A. in Film, Animation, and Video and a Certificate in Art History from the Rhode Island School of Design, summa cum laude. She also studied German at Brown University and physics at the University of Virginia. Rebecca has worn many hats in the film industry both in narrative and documentary films. She began her career in New York City as a film and television camera
person. She also studied Method Acting and has acted professionally both on stage and on screen. Her list of credits is long and distinguished, from Sex and the City, to Law and Order; SVU, to feature films Unfaithful, and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days to Oscar-nominated documentaries such as Capturing the Friedmans. She won an Emmy Award and a Peabody Award for the PBS documentary series, African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross. She is currently producing a short film Uncle Silas as well as several other short films. She is the founder of her own film company, Elephant Cinema. Rebecca will be working on several projects in the fall including a film about the day of the standoff with the Boston Marathon bombers, a short film based on a play by Terry Milner, and a feature narrative film shooting in December. She has also written a feature comedy/drama screenplay that she will direct. Rebecca continues to show her drive to thrive by her hard-work, motivation, and high expectations.

Rod Riegel ‘84 The old adage, “If a tree falls in the woods and there is no one around to hear it, does it make a sound?” can be applied to Rod Riegel’s job in the television and film industry. If a great film or television show is made but there is no one to watch it, does it exist? Rod spends his days marketing and distributing television and film projects both in the United States and overseas. His job takes him around the world and in contact with some of the most powerful people in Hollywood. Rod credits his success in the industry to his well-rounded education from St. Johns and later in college at Furman University. Rod transferred into St. Johns for his junior and senior years from a large public high school, which can be a difficult transition for many students. Rod seemed to take it all in stride and his ability to jump into a new situation and find success has been an asset in his chosen career. After graduating high school, Rod continued on to Furman University, which to him, felt very similar to St. Johns. The family atmosphere, smaller classes, and meaningful relationships with professors were things he loved about St. Johns and wanted in a college. After graduating college, he had no idea what he wanted
Michael Rios ‘05 T h e re a re s o m a ny factors to weigh when casting a television show or movie - gender, height, skin color, hair color, build, facial features, skill, voice, not to mention the politics involved with agents, producers, writers, and directors. It is a balancing act which is part of what Michael Rios loves about the job. Michael “is remarkably gifted intellectually, but never takes his gifts for granted” according to one of

to do with his life so he went to be a bartender in the Virgin Islands. One day he got a call from a friend from Furman who had a job opportunity for him at Turner Broadcasting. Rod thought it sounded like quite an adventure so he decided to seize the opportunity even though he had no experience in the industry. After Turner Broadcasting he went to work for Fox Broadcasting and worked in several different divisions of the company, working his way up to Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing and Strategic Affairs. Rod is currently in charge of Global Marketing and Strategy for 3Net, the joint venture studio and network from Discovery Channel, IMAX, and Sony Picture Studios. He oversees all marketing, communications, and creative services for the company’s U.S. channel in addition to being in charge of all global partnerships, distribution, and licensing. His offices are on the Sony Picture Studios lot in California where he often finds himself bumping into celebrities. Rod’s encouragement to anyone interested in getting into the industry is to work hard, take every opportunity, and use your connections. His job is incredibly diverse which he loves, and as he reflected back on the ways that St. Johns prepared him for his job now, he credits the diversity and quality of the education that he received as a student.
his St. Johns teachers. While at St. Johns, he never imagined that being a casting director would be a part of his future. He knew that he loved television and film, and he had learned while at St. Johns to be a great problem solver. As a casting director, there are countless things that can go awry from conflicts in actors’ schedules due to shooting schedule changes, to new roles added at the last minute, to personal conflicts on the set. Michael loves having to solve problems and find last minute solutions. Michael also credits St. Johns with developing in him a love for the way a story is crafted and how it draws in the viewer. He is a self-described television and movie “nerd” which led him to major in film studies and minor in Pre-Business at New York University after graduating
from St. Johns. Michael said that “attending St. Johns for so many years and feeling that sense of community helped me develop a strong sense of who I was. I was able to move to New York, make new friends, and explore career paths that were out of my comfort zone.” While in college Michael landed an internship with CBS casting. He loved the art of selecting and shaping characters into what was seen on the screen. Michael dabbled in a few other areas of study while in college, but he always came back to casting. As a freelance associate casting director, Michael works with casting
Christina Madison ‘05 The phrase “the clothes make the man” is an accurate one for Christina Madison. She spends her days designing and planning outfits that will help bring a character to life on the screen. People who love to shop probably think that Christina Madison has a dream job. She gets to (or has to, depending on your perspective) shop constantly, looking for the perfect clothes and accessories to make the perfect outfit. “I love the idea of creating a character through their style,” Christina said. She understands that with just the right fabric, style, fit, cut, texture, and color, she can play a part in transforming an actor into a believable character. Christina was a costume designer long before it was her profession. She is one of the rare students who knew what she wanted to do with her life from a young age, and made sure to work hard and push herself to achieve her goal. The pinnacle of her design projects while in high school was to design her own graduation dress and oversee the project as it was made by a seamstress. During her time at St. Johns, she stood out from her classmates because of her maturity and desire to live outside of the bounds of the typical teenager life. She was described as “generous and thoughtful by her teachers.” She would regularly come in early to discuss current events and issues over a cup of coffee with
directors on television pilots, television series, and films. He is responsible for finding the right actors for all speaking roles on camera from the series lead to people with just one line. “Without the right actor, a good script won’t come alive,” said Michael. He is certainly playing his part in helping stories come to life on the screen. Michael is currently working on a new show called Mr. Robot that has television critics buzzing. He has worked on a number of projects, most recently on the television shows Gotham, Sleepy Hollow, The Jack and Triumph Show, Hostages, and films Deliver Us From Evil and They Came Together.
her favorite teachers. It was clear to all who knew her that she was setting the scene for her next big move. Christina had her sights set on the big city and carefully and intentionally went through the necessary steps. From St. Johns, Christina moved to New York City where she earned an A.A.S. in Fashion Design and a B.F.A. in Fabric Styling, with a minor in Art History from the Fashion Institute of Technology. She interned on CBS’s The Good Wife and continued on to be the Costumes Production Assistant for seasons 4 and 5. She filled in on different pilot projects and then went on to be the 2nd Assistant Designer/Shopper for NBC’s The Mysteries of Laura. She was the Costume Designer for F*IT Club’s Spring Fling: Anniversary, a series of six plays all with an anniversary theme. Christina is currently working on several different commercials. She admits that it is a long and difficult road to make it in the field of costume design, but it is a challenge she is willing to face. “St. Johns set such a high bar, that I expected excellence from myself,” Christina said. She is proving that to be true as she excels in her field.

June 30, 2015 Dear St. Johns Families and Friends: Having just closed the books on our fiscal year, we write to share some great news about the results of the 2014-2015 St. Johns Annual Fund and the Gala & Auction. We are thrilled to report that the Annual Fund set a new high-water mark in total funds raised. As of today, the School has received 500 gifts totaling more than $425,000! On top of that record figure, the Gala & Auction also garnered unprecedented support, raising $123,000! We cannot thank you enough for the tremendous outpouring of support we received from so many of you! Dr. Steven B. Kailes and Edward M. Ellison
Annual Fund
We owe a great deal of thanks to our Parent Chairs, John and Patty Linge, for their outstanding leadership of the Annual Fund. Working closely with our tireless development tandem of Amy Weaver and Michelle Kirk, they organized a terrific group of parent, trustee, and alumni volunteers who made countless phone calls and wrote personal notes urging parents from every grade and other members of the St. Johns community to participate in this year’s Annual Fund. So what have we been doing with these funds? A healthy portion of the funds supported day-to-day operations not entirely covered by tuition. In addition, we were able to support additional travel and workshops for faculty professional development and we acquired additional technology hardware to support the expanded roll-out of the iPad program. In the coming months we will upgrade the outdated sound system in the Performing Arts Center, something that is long overdue, and we have purchased additional percussion instruments for the band program. Thanks to the generosity of several major donors, we purchased additional equipment for our athletic teams, including a brand-new racing shell for the crew team as well as improved batting cages for the baseball and softball teams. We are also developing plans to install lighting on the baseball field in the near future.
Gala & Auction Kim Unger and Kathe Lloyd assembled a stellar team of parent and faculty volunteers who not only organized a wonderful community event, but also worked tirelessly to solicit donated items, goods, and sponsorships. As promised, the funds raised from this year’s Gala & Auction will be dedicated to the first of two phases of work on the School’s outdated locker room. This first phase will upgrade the core infrastructure of this space – heating, air conditioning, plumbing, and lighting. We hope to complete the first phase this summer. Plans for the second phase are dependent on additional funding, but we hope to complete the entire space prior to the start of the 2016-2017 school year. So, if you are interested in purchasing a locker for your child, please contact the Advancement Office! The best investment money can buy isn’t about money. It’s about the right environment for children to learn and discover themselves, a place which opens doors for students and instills the character and confidence to walk through them. At St. Johns we accomplish this through an academic program whose challenges students are intent on meeting; teachers who understand their students and bring out their best; plentiful and accessible arts, sports, and other enriching activities that enable students to find and develop all their talents; a peaceful and safe campus with some amazing facilities; and a caring community where all are welcomed and respected. The funds you have so generously committed to our mission will be used to ensure that an investment in a St. Johns education remains the best investment a parent can make. Please accept our most sincere thanks and appreciation for your incredible generosity this year. We hope you are enjoying a relaxing summer vacation with your family and friends. Warm regards,
Edward M. Ellison Headmaster

SUPPORTING
TheAnnual Fund
What is the Annual Fund? Each year St. Johns Country Day School seeks contributions to the Annual Fund, primarily in unrestricted gifts, to help enhance the St. Johns experience. All St. Johns constituents (parents, alumni, alumni parents, faculty and staff, grandparents, and friends) are asked to consider an annual gift to ensure that St. Johns can fulfill its mission of providing a superior college preparatory program to all students.
How are contributions used? In past years the Annual Fund was a project-based fundraiser, but the Annual Fund now supports all aspects of the school’s mission. Gifts to the Annual Fund ensure that current and future St. Johns students continue to experience the fine education that this wonderful school has offered for over 60 years. Gifts to the Annual Fund provide St. Johns with the resources to enrich the learning environment and support: • Faculty professional development
• Curriculum and program enhancements
• Special events and activities (field trips, athletics, arts programs)
• Technology and facilities

PTL Gala & Auction
St. Johns Spartans Golf Tournament
We wish to thank everyone who was instrumental in the record-breaking success of the Best Foot Forward Gala & Auction. Many members of the St. Johns community were incredibly generous – donating items for the silent and live auctions, securing donations, purchasing raffle tickets and lockers, attending the event, and bidding on items. Thank you for your incredible support of this fun-filled and successful evening!
The 9th Annual Spartans Golf Tournament hosted a fun, successful day of golf at Eagle Harbor Golf Club. Net proceeds from the tournament benefit the athletic department and our student-athletes.

Thank You For Your Support! Supporting St. Johns Country Day School
Memorial and Honoraria Gifts
We are truly gratified by the broad base of support St. Johns Country Day School has received from parents, grandparents, faculty and staff, alumni, alumni parents, and friends over the years. There are many ways to support St. Johns Country Day School. Every gift is significant and helps us fulfill the school’s mission. The largest number of gifts to the school consist of cash contributions to the Annual Fund, which has been identified by the Board of Trustees as the school’s fundraising priority. Other methods of support include gifts of securities, real estate, personal property, life insurance policies, charitable trusts, and bequests.
Donors may honor a relative, friend, faculty member, student, or alumnus through a special named or memorial gift to St. Johns Country Day School. Many varied opportunities exist to reflect the interests of the honoree or the donor.
The Annual Fund
Thank you for considering a gift to St. Johns County Day School. If you would like additional information about any of these giving opportunities, please contact Amy Weaver at (904) 264-9572 or aweaver@sjcds.net. Also, donors should consult their attorney, accountant, or financial advisor for specific tax information and assistance.
Essential to the growth of any independent school is a robust and well-supported Annual Fund. Tuition alone does not cover the full cost of each child’s education, and no independent school could charge the full cost without making itself inaccessible to all but a select few. St. Johns Country Day School uses the Annual Fund to provide the extra margin of excellence in our programs and facilities, over and above that made possible by tuition.
Planned Gifts Planned giving presents an opportunity for donors to structure a gift that not only provides for the future of St. Johns and our students, but also achieves a variety of personal financial objectives for the donor. Deferred gifts may include bequests, life insurance, and trusts.
Our goal is full participation by the St. Johns family. Each year, parents, trustees, alumni, alumni parents, faculty, staff, grandparents, and friends are solicited. We hope that you will support the school and our students with a gift to the Annual Fund each year.
In-Kind Donations Donations of equipment, materials, or other valuable items for St. Johns’ classrooms, libraries, offices, or facilities are considered gifts in kind. Such donations are welcome, but acceptance of some items may be subject to usage and space constraints. Some donors consider gifts of appreciated securities or real estate to show their support of the school and gain tax advantages at the same time.
2014-2015 Annual Giving Report
This Annual Giving Report lists those donors whose gifts were received prior to June 30, 2015. Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of each listing. In case of error or omission, please accept our sincerest apologies and contact Amy Weaver (aweaver@sjcds.net or (904) 264-9572) so that we can correct our records.
