Headmaster’s Message

GRADUATION

Greetings to every member of the St. Johns Family! It’s hard to believe that nearly a full year has passed since we were celebrating the 60th anniversary of the founding of St. Johns. So many traditional events have come and gone – Founders Day, Homecoming, Senior Presentation, St. Johns Celebrates, St. Johns on Broadway, Spring Fling, and Graduation – that it is easy to lose track of time, as one exciting year runs into the next. This is the norm at our small, but mighty school, where we stay true to our mission by asking ourselves “what is in the best interests of our students?”

Today, in that larger world, many are questioning the quality of education our youngest citizens are receiving. Parents are asking “where’s the return on my investment?” At St. Johns, we continue to distinguish ourselves by offering outstanding value for students, parents, and graduates. The best investment money can buy isn’t about money. It’s about the right environment for children to learn and discover themselves. At St. Johns it’s about our good people and great education, which open doors for students and instill the character and confidence to walk through them. An investment in a St. Johns student is an exceptional value, and it is rewarded with interest and appreciation – theirs. I look forward to seeing all of you at Homecoming and other fun St. Johns events throughout the year. Warm regards,

Edward M. Ellison

Fifty-Ninth Commencement Held All 50 students in the senior class officially became graduates of St. Johns Country Day School on May 31, 2014. Each member of the Class of 2014 participated in the evening commencement ceremony held at the Thrasher-Horne Center for the Arts on the campus of St. Johns River State College in Orange Park.

CLASS OF 2014

St. Johns is small, but mighty, indeed! Together on one beautiful campus, we are three divisions and one tight-knit community. Because the faculty and administration come to know – and know deeply – each student, we can tailor Edward M. Ellison, Headmaster teaching to the child and forge partnerships with parents. Our students, too, come to know one another, making lifelong friendships with their peers while they learn from older students and mentor younger ones (especially through the charming tradition of senior-first grade buddies). They see firsthand what comes next, whetting their appetites for advancement, and making transitions smooth. Since the school and classes are small, our students can’t hide and don’t get lost. In fact, thanks to our many activities, students have plentiful opportunities to take part, stand out, and lead. Yes, good things do come in and come from small schools. By discovering and distinguishing themselves in our intimate learning environment, our graduates are well prepared for college and life in the larger world.

Headmaster Edward Ellison emceed the commencement ceremony. Georgia Green and Ashan Perera gave speeches on behalf of the Class of 2014. Dr. Steven B. Kailes, President of the Board of Trustees, presented graduates with their diplomas.

SPRING FLING

Beloved art teacher extraordinaire, Mrs. Tami Culbert (center), retired from St. Johns after 21 years of dedicated service. Her husband, Bruce Culbert, and Mrs. Mary Ann Petska, a former art teacher at St. Johns, joined Tami at this year’s Spring Fling.

This year’s Spring Fling paid tribute to two difference makers in the field of the arts. The 2014 event, held on a beautiful April 25 evening on the deck in the Quad, honored retiring art teacher, Mrs. Tami Culbert, as well as 2014 Alumnus of the Year, Mr. Walter Parks.

To commemorate 21 years of dedicated service by longtime St. Johns art teacher, Tami Culbert, the school has established the St. Johns Arts Hall of Fame. Director of Academic and College Counseling, Mr. Rod Cox, recognized the beloved teacher’s immensely positive impact on St. Johns in a touching and heartfelt speech presented at the

ceremony. Mr. Cox said, “With gratitude and love, Tami’s students come back to St. Johns to thank her and to talk about their latest projects and ambitions. Increasingly, they appreciate her generosity as they discover, year after year, how much of what she taught them has opened up opportunities for them. She is always the student advocate, habitually searching for the means to motivate young people and guide them toward success. St. Johns will miss Tami Culbert, an accomplished artist, a dedicated teacher, a champion of the arts and of St. Johns, and a very, very generous friend.”

With the creation of the St. Johns Arts Hall of Fame to honor Mrs. Culbert, this year’s Spring Fling featured the first inductee into the newly-created Hall -- Mr. Walter Parks. The music legend, who graduated from St. Johns in 1976, was also named “2014 Alumnus of the Year.” The veteran songwriter, vocalist and guitarist delighted Spring Fling attendees with his soulful musical renderings. Earlier that day, Mr. Parks performed for Middle and Upper School students in the Performing Arts Center. Besides playing his music, he shared his life experiences and encouraged students to follow their passions and never give up on their dreams.

This year’s much-anticipated production of St. Johns on Broadway was a smashing success! The 16th incarnation of the St. Johns tradition, Broadway... Then & Now, paid tribute to successful Broadway musicals from the past. Both performances of St. Johns on Broadway, held April 4th and 5th in the Performing Arts Center, delighted the nearly sold-out audiences.

The success of this year’s production, which included participation by nearly 360 students, was due to the vision, dedication, perseverance and countless hours of work by so many in the St. Johns community. Several months of planning, coordination, learning, practice and rehearsing went into the 2014 version of St. Johns on Broadway.

Trent Hanson and Ellie Bright Grade 5 students Hannah Vanover, Abbey Lantinberg and Maddie Moody were winners in the 2014 Concert on the Green Poster Contest. Anna Kemp and Juliet Moody create animal masks inspired by Oaxacan artists in Mexico.

DECADES DAY

UF’s “Gator Chomp” vs. FSU’s “Tomahawk Chop” broke out on Decades Day as seniors wore shirts representing their college selections. No matter the college, they’ll always be Spartans!

This year’s celebration of St. Johns Country Day School’s 60th Anniversary culminated with Decades Day on May 2. Many students dressed in attire from the past six decades to mark the event, while seniors wore shirts representing their college selections.

Decades Day began with seniors and their “First Grade Buddies” surprising everybody by rushing into the Quad at flag raising to dance to The Black Eyed Peas song “Let’s Get it Started.”
Later that morning, all students attended a special Decades Day assembly in the Performing Arts Center where items were collected for placement in a time capsule. Representatives from every grade and many organizations showcased items ranging from clothing, a Starbucks coffee cup and state championship soccer medals to school brochures, posters and books. Even an electric guitar was donated for the cause. The time capsule, to be located on campus in a

22

place to be determined, will be opened in forty years by those celebrating the school’s 100th Anniversary.

Head of Upper School, Mrs. Fisher, said, “We came up with the idea of Decades Day and the time capsule for everyone to get involved in the celebration of our school. We celebrated the history of St. Johns throughout the past school year, so we’ve seen what the school has been. With the time capsule, we’re able to emphasize what we are now, with an eye towards what St. Johns will be in the future.”

The 8th Annual Spartan Golf Tournament was a tremendous success, with 84 golfers enjoying a beautiful day of golf at Eagle Harbor Golf Club on April 25, 2014 in Orange Park. According to Tournament Chairs, Ms. Holli Kennedy and Mrs. Traci Livingston, the generous support of sponsors and golfers was overwhelming. More than $13,000 was raised from the event, with all proceeds directly benefitting the St. Johns Athletic Department.

Holli Kennedy said, “The 8th Annual Golf Tournament was a great day of camaraderie, and a little competition, for the St. Johns family. The amazing friendship and heartfelt loyalty of each participant was obvious as we joined together to support the athletic programs at St. Johns. I would like to thank everyone for their hard work and dedication in making this tournament a success.” Be sure to mark your calendars for the 9th Annual Golf Tournament scheduled for Friday, April 24, 2015.

The Decades Day celebration concluded with an all-school cookout and an old-fashioned ice cream social in the Brown Gym for seniors and their First Grade Buddies. By all accounts, Decades Day was a truly fitting conclusion to the school-year long celebration of St. Johns’ 60th Anniversary.

The best investment money can buy isn’t about money. It’s about the right environment for children to learn and discover themselves. At St. Johns Country Day School it’s about our good people and great education, which open doors for students and instill the character and confidence to walk through them. We accomplish this through an academic program whose challenges students are intent on meeting; teachers who understand their students and bring out their best; plentiful and accessible arts, sports, and other enriching activities that enable students to find and develop all their talents; a peaceful and safe campus with some amazing facilities; and a caring community where all are welcomed and respected. An investment in a St. Johns student is an exceptional value, and it is rewarded with interest and appreciation – theirs.

Edward M. Ellison and Dr. Steven B. Kailes

As our fiscal year comes to a close, we write to share some great news about the results of the 2013-2014 St. Johns Annual Fund. We are thrilled to report that the Annual Fund broke every record we keep! The School has received 559 gifts totaling more than $375,000! In addition, parent participation in the Annual Fund eclipsed 73%, marking the third year in a row that St. Johns parents have surpassed 72% participation! Once again, the St. Johns Board of Trustees and the Faculty participated in the Annual Fund at the rate of 100%. We cannot thank you enough for the tremendous outpouring of support we received from so many of you! Thanks to your collective support we have been able to secure several major gifts, including a $1 million donation that was earmarked to reduce the school’s long-term debt. This kind of financial support is evidence that St. Johns’ grassroots fundraising (as demonstrated by trustee and faculty leadership coupled with robust parent participation) can attract the interest of those who are capable of making strategic donations that will benefit every St. Johns student. The School also enjoyed increased support from alumni, parents of alumni, and grandparents this year. We owe a great deal of thanks to our Annual Fund Chairs, Jonathan and Dawn Montgomery, for their outstanding leadership. Working closely with our tireless development tandem of Amy Weaver and Michelle Kirk, they organized a terrific group of parent and trustee volunteers who made countless phone calls and wrote personal notes urging fellow parents from every grade to participate in this year’s Annual Fund. So what have we been doing with these generous financial gifts? A healthy portion of the funds supported day-to-day operations not entirely covered by tuition. In addition, we were able to support additional travel and workshops for faculty professional development; we procured increased bandwidth, installed more Wi-Fi access points on campus, and acquired additional technology hardware to support the expanded roll-out of the iPad program this fall; we upgraded the lighting system in the Performing Arts Center; and we purchased additional equipment for our athletic teams. Over the summer, we plan to install surveillance cameras in several key locations, address long-overdue maintenance to the fading paint on the roof of the Administration building, and repair and replace decaying canopies for some of our covered walkways. Please accept our most sincere thanks and appreciation for your incredible generosity this year. Warm regards,

Edward M. Ellison Steven B. Kailes, M.D. Headmaster President, Board of Trustees

SUPPORTING The Annual Fund

What is the Annual Fund?

Each year St. Johns Country Day School seeks contributions to the Annual Fund, primarily in unrestricted gifts, to help enhance the St. Johns experience. All St. Johns constituents (parents, alumni, alumni parents, faculty and staff, grandparents, and friends) are asked to consider an annual gift to ensure that St. Johns can fulfill its mission of providing a superior college preparatory program to all students.

How are contributions used? In past years the Annual Fund was a project-based fundraiser, but the Annual Fund now supports all aspects of the school’s mission. Gifts to the Annual Fund ensure that current and future St. Johns students continue to experience the fine education that this wonderful school has offered for over 60 years.

Gifts to the Annual Fund provide St. Johns with the resources to enrich the learning environment and support:

• • • •

Faculty professional development Curriculum and program enhancements Special events and activities (field trips, athletics, arts programs) Technology and facilities

Other Gifts To St. Johns Designated Donations We are very grateful to a member of the St. Johns Country Day School family who wishes to remain anonymous but had a significant impact on the school this year. This generous donor gave a $1 million gift designated to pay down some of the debt incurred in constructing the Heinrich Learning Resource Center, the Performing Arts Center, Alumni Gym, and more recently, the expanded Dorothea Heinrich Middle School and the Stephen F. Russey Upper School. In making this donation, the donor expressed appreciation for the increased outpouring of support St. Johns has received in recent years and hopes the gift will serve as a catalyst for addition financial support for the school in the near future.

Thank you for your support! Supporting St. Johns Country Day School We are truly gratified by the broad base of support St. Johns Country Day School has received from parents, grandparents, faculty and staff, alumni, alumni parents, and friends over the years, especially during this momentous 60th Anniversary year. There are many ways to support St. Johns. Every gift is significant and helps us fulfill the school’s mission. The largest number of gifts to the school consist of cash contributions to the Annual Fund, which has been identified by the Board of Trustees as the school’s fundraising priority. Other methods of support include gifts of securities, real estate, personal property, life insurance policies, charitable trusts, and bequests.

The Annual Fund Essential to the growth of any independent school is a robust and well-supported Annual Fund. Tuition alone does not cover the full cost of each child’s education, and no independent school could charge the full cost without making itself inaccessible to all but a select few. St. Johns Country Day School uses the Annual Fund to provide the extra margin of excellence in our programs and facilities, over and above that made possible by tuition. Our goal is full participation by the St. Johns family. Each year, parents, trustees, alumni, alumni parents, faculty, staff, grandparents, and friends are solicited. We hope that you will support the school and our students with a gift to the Annual Fund each year.

2013-2014 Annual Giving Report

In-Kind Donations Donations of equipment, materials, or other valuable items for St. Johns’ classrooms, libraries, offices, or facilities are considered gifts in kind. Such donations are welcome, but acceptance of some items may be subject to usage and space constraints. Some donors consider gifts of appreciated securities or real estate to show their support of the school and gain tax advantages at the same time.

Memorial and Honoraria Gifts Donors may honor a relative, friend, faculty member, student, or alumnus through a special named or memorial gift to St. Johns Country Day School. Many varied opportunities exist to reflect the interests of the honoree or the donor.

Planned Gifts Planned giving presents an opportunity for donors to structure a gift that not only provides for the future of St. Johns and our students, but also achieves a variety of personal financial objectives for the donor. Deferred gifts may include bequests, life insurance, and trusts. Thank you for considering a gift to St. Johns County Day School. If you would like additional information about any of these giving opportunities, please contact Amy Weaver at 904.264.9572 or aweaver@sjcds.net. Also, donors should consult their attorney, accountant, or financial advisor for specific tax information and assistance. This Annual Report lists those donors whose gifts were received prior to June 30, 2014. Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of each listing. In case of error or omission, please accept our sincerest apologies and contact Amy Weaver (aweaver@sjcds.net or 904.264.9572) so that we can correct our records.

While touring campus, they stopped by a few classrooms and chatted with some current students and teachers. The couple was excited about the changes that have taken place on campus over the years. Maria was thrilled to find a photo of herself and classmates at flag raising during the 1960s hanging in the Performing Arts Center. During a trip around the world after graduation, Maria traveled to Hawaii, fell in love with the Islands, and stayed. In 1984, Maria opened the Gallery of Great Things, an art gallery featuring “the work of Hawaii’s finest artists and craftspeople.” For more information, visit the gallery’s website at galleryofgreatthingshawaii.com. While in Florida, Betsy and Irv spent time with Susan Emerson Bancks ’64. Maria and Amy Weaver have continued to chat. Maria said, “We loved seeing St. Johns... in fact Irv really wishes he had gone to a school like ours! Thanks Amy, really had a great time!” Maria also forwarded a photo of the Class of 1964 graduation, noting the names (and sometimes nicknames!) of the members of the class.
