Greetings from your Library’s Board of Directors. 2016 has been an exciting and challenging year, but one that brings us a great deal of pride in the Library’s staff, programs and especially in the community that we serve. You have taken advantage of our work to help bring wireless internet access to those most in need so they may better pursue knowledge, perform in school or pursue career opportunities. Strategies and initiatives were put in place to continue to take SJCPL programs and services forward, meeting the ever-changing capabilities of technology and needs of the community. We’ve begun the work to refresh and improve our Main Library facility to make sure we have the infrastructure in place to support our programs and services while contributing to the vibrancy of the South Bend downtown area. We look forward to working with our great Library staff as we embrace the opportunities of 2017 and beyond and hope that you will continue to participate with us! Paraphrasing the trademark line from Reading Rainbow, “But don’t take my word for it! Come and see for yourself!” Augie Freda Jr. | President of the St. Joseph County Public Library Board

In 2016 we offered new ways of making it easy to use the Library, including digital cards and youth access cards that brought more children and teens into the Library. Our meeting rooms became accessible to a wider audience, which now includes businesses. To grow readers and connect our community, we offered over 1,300 free programs including Science Alive, One Book and the Summer Reading Challenge. We took story hours on the road, visiting organizations throughout the community. Our highspeed WiFi brought in record numbers of people who used our connections and computers to bridge the digital divide. In 2017, we’ll focus on the importance of the community’s Central Library. By improving the quality of our public spaces, we can improve the lives of community members as well. We want to spark public discourse, create beautiful spaces that delight, engender civic pride, support community health and safety, promote environmental sustainability, support economic development and nurture an authentic sense of place. We want to hear the community’s ideas for reimagining the Central Library. Share your thoughts and help us develop a visionary public space in the heart of our community.
