God is in the Humdrum Things in Life by Mr. Hucks The writings of Oswald Chambers, a Scottish teacher and evangelist, have had a great impact on my life especially when I was a young Christian. One of my favorites of Chambers’ devotionals talks about how God is in the humdrum or ordinary things of our lives. As Chambers states, “What we call a crisis, God doesn’t; and what God reveals as the great critical moments of a person’s life, we look on as humdrum commonplaces. When we become spiritual, we discern that God was in the humdrum commonplace and we never knew it.” The major events or crises of our lives are not always where our greatest spiritual growth takes place. Our greatest spiritual growth often takes place in our ordinary, daily lives, the seemingly boring, humdrum routines that we go through each day. But that is where the real spiritual treasure is hidden. This should be both sobering and encouraging to us as Christians. It is easy to get caught up in the rhythms of life and forget to look for God in our daily lives. We expect to find him in the triumphs and tragedies of our lives, but not so much in the boring details. Washing dishes, making beds, going to work, helping kids with homework, or taking them to practices and games—all of this seems quite ordinary, and it is; but as Chambers reminds us, these are the very places some of our most important spiritual lessons are learned. We just celebrated the most important religious holiday in Christianity—the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. This is indeed a cause for celebration, not just on Easter Sunday, but every day. We can celebrate the resurrection of the Lord, by faithfully living each day of our lives, with all of their humdrumness, for the glory of God. Each day, no matter how ordinary, is a gift from God. “This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalm 118:24
