Tiger Stripes Reflections on Who We Are by: Bart Den Boer Love…Learn…Serve: Making It Come Alive This Is Not YOUR Math…. the first in a series of articles on mathematics education. This spring we at SJCS are piloting four different sets of mathematics curriculum materials throughout grades 1, 2, 3 and 6-8. All four sets use an approach in which the teacher guides students to investigate and develop strategies to find solutions to real-life math problems. When you and I “learned math,” it likely went something like this. First our teacher announced the kind of problems we were “doing” that day. Then she put an example of that type of problem on the board and demonstrated how to “do” it. Then we practiced doing those problems for the rest of the period. “Doing math” mostly meant practicing a procedure (algorithm) in order to efficiently arrive at the correct answer. In the materials we are piloting, math class is very different. As an introduction to learning multiplication, the teacher might present a real-life problem involving mathematical reasoning. For example, “Grades 1-4 at SJCS are going on a field trip. Students are visiting three different sites with admission costs of $5, $5 and $6. What is the grand total admission cost for all students going on the trip?” Next, students collaborate in small groups to come up with ways to find the total cost of admission. Groups present, test and compare their methods for accuracy and creativity. Under the guidance of the teacher, students identify the most efficient methods of solving the problem. The goal is for mathematics to become meaningful by having students work together to develop problem-solving strategies. Later on, with teacher guidance, students identify the most efficient problem-solving methods. So how is this a reflection on who we are?” Coming next week: collaboration, creativity and responsibility.

Sports this Girls Volleyball:
The Lady Tigers picked up two big wins this past week defeating both Legacy and Achiever. Finding themselves down early against Legacy, the girls fought back in come from behind fashion to win the last two games to take the match. Against Achiever, the girls were in control from the very beginning, handling the Eagles in the first two games to pick up the victory. The wins keep the Lady Tigers in the playoff hunt with a record of 3-2. The girls will look to continue to play good volleyball as they take on Los Gatos Christian, Campbell Christian, and Baymonte Christian. Monday: Practice 3:15-5:00 Tuesday: SJCS vs. Los Gatos Christian @ Camden Community Center 3:30 Wednesday: SJCS vs. Campbell Christian @ Campbell Christian 3:30 Thursday: SJCS vs. Baymonte @ Campbell Christian 3:30
Boys Soccer: The Tigers boys improved to 4-0 on the season as they cruised to a 6-2 victory over Achiever Christian this past Thursday. The Tigers showed off their great passing skills which led to some easy goals. Ben J. led the way offensively, tallying two goals. So far this season the boys have outscored their opponents 23-6. The Tigers will look to continue their winning ways this week as they take on Los Gatos Christian, Campbell Christian, and Baymonte Christian. Teacher Tales Spotlight on Preschool Check this section each week for exciting stories about teachers doing great things in the classrooms of San Jose Christian School. SJCS has wonderful teachers at all levels, and this week we wanted to spotlight Ms. Adrie—our Dragonfly Classroom (preschool age 3) lead teacher. Ms. Adrie incorporates character building and Biblical worldview into her classroom on a daily basis, and her students benefit from her creative approach to teaching. Dragonfly students get to learn through exploration, song, art, and many other techniques. Here is a peek into her classroom from her daily news last week: This week we continued talking about friendship and the different parts of a friend: how we use ears to hear our friends, hands to help them in a time of need, mouths to talk to them, eyes to make eye contact and look at them, a heart for caring for our friends and putting them before ourselves, and a good memory. We also made season trees with Ms. Tabitha by using finger paint for leaves.
