Chapels This Week

WAT Class Winner - Laps

Both middle school and elementary school students have chapels this week. As part of our NEW IDENTITY theme for the year, the topic for these chapels will be caring for our bodies, both physically and emotionally, as part of our new life in Christ.

The 7th grade class is the winner for most laps walked, with a total of 799 laps, an average of 42.05 laps per student. Way to go!

On Tuesday at 8:40am, the 5th - 8th graders will hear from Mrs. Jennifer Van Muckey as she shares her powerful testimony and challenges the students to healthy living. On Wednesday at 2:05pm, Cher Kooiman (SJCS parent and physical therapist) will speak with the JK - 4th graders about caring for our bodies in God-honoring ways. Parents are always welcome to attend SJCS chapels.

No School Thurs. & Fri.

A special shout out goes to 1st grade for having 6 students walk 60 or more laps! (Two students walked 70, one 67, one 66, and two 60). They walked a total of 784 laps as class, a lot for those little legs! In all, we recorded a total of 5,918 laps walked by SJCS students!

Scrip Orders by Wed. Since we have a short week this week, scrip orders are due by Wednesday 10/23. We will receive the scrip cards next week. See the attached flyer for more information. Plan ahead now to purchase your holiday gift cards with scrip!

Due to our teacher retreat, there are no classes on Thursday or Friday. Extended Care will be open on those days off, however. Thursday 10/24 - Pajama Day/Game Day. Students can get comfy in their sweats or pajamas for the day and bring their favorite games or video games to play. Normal extended care activities still available. Friday 10/25 - Field Trip to Movies. Extended Care students will take a trip with the staff over to Camera 7 at the Pruneyard to see Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, showing at 11:45am. The whole group will return no later than 2pm. Please sign the permission slip (available in room 15) by Wed 10/23 and bring $7.50 for the ticket. Contact Kelly McPherson with additional questions.

After 10/28, the remaining tickets will be available to the rest of the school community. There is no charge for this year’s tickets.

Annual SJCS Book Fair The Scholastic Book Fair is coming to SJCS on 11/12-11/18. Buying books for your kids earns us new books for the SJCS library as well. You may also purchase books for specific classrooms to be enjoyed by all the students. We are collecting change to buy books for our library, and whatever we collect will be matched dollar-for-dollar by Scholastic in their “books for needy students” program. To sign up to help with a sales shift, please go to our school website under "parents" and "volunteer opportunities" or directly to the website mysignup.com/sjcs. Help us make this exciting event a great success!

October Box Tops Bring in your Box Tops during the month of October as part of a classroom competition. Trim the Box Top labels from the packaging of a wide range of household products, and SJCS will receive money from these companies. The winning class gets a party. Funds raised through Box Tops for Education are used for campus beautification.

P-T Conferences Parent-Teacher Conferences will be Thursday and Friday, November 7 & 8. School will not be in session those days, but Extended Care will be available.

Teacher Tales Check this section each week for exciting stories of teachers doing great things in the classrooms of San Jose Christian School. In Miss Schibsted’s Science classes, 6th - 8th graders have been busy learning and applying the scientific method. 6th graders experimented and made observations on worms, followed by a lab that uses Pendulums to practice the scientific method. 7th and 8th graders designed and carried out an experiment that focused on exercise and the body. Students measured their classmates’ heart rate, respiration, flexibility, etc. while they did specific exercises like push-ups, running, jumping jacks, arm wrestling and more. Students recorded their data using a Google Spreadsheet and then created a graph. Miss Schibsted was very impressed by how well the students worked together and planned experiments, and she is excited to see how these projects will help students better understand scientific principles and how to use scientific method in the future.

IXL Challenge Results Hear Ye! Hear Ye! The final results of the IXL challenge are in! After 4 weeks of competition and many hours of dedication, the 7th graders came from being behind to pull off an exciting win over the 8th grade!

Final scores were: 7th grade: 63,829 points (an average of 6 hours per student) 8th grade: 58,117 points (almost 5 hours per student). Congratulations 7th graders! You deserved it.
