Open House Success

Food Payments Due

Saturday’s Open House event was one of the most successful in SJCS history! 32 families representing 44 students were treated to individual tours of the campus and presentations about the distinguishing characteristics of our school.

If you ordered milk, pizza, or Frozen Friday treats for your child during second semester, please turn in your payment to the office this week. If you have any questions, contact Tanya Garside.

Many of our guests were referred by you, our current families, and we thank you for helping spread the word. If you are curious to find out if a family you recommended came to the event, check with Betsy Phillips in the office. If you invited someone who came, you’ll receive an SJCS “Recommend One” water bottle. Don’t forget that our Open House for current families is Wednesday, February 12 at 6:30pm. You’ll be able to see what your children are doing this year and get a preview of what class will be like next year.

January Series Concludes The final two sessions of the January Series are this week. Each session starts at 9:30am in the SJCS Auditorium. Monday: Anne Zaki, “Is the Arab Spring the Arab Christian’s Fall?” Zaki lives with her husband and four sons in Cairo, Egypt and teaches at the Evangelical Theological Seminary there. She will share what life is like in Egypt for Middle Eastern Christians and where she finds her hope. Tuesday: Jeremy Begbie, “Reshaping Lament: Music and the Way to Joy.” A Professor at Duke University Divinity School and professionally trained musician, Begbie specializes in performance lectures in which he explores the relationship between music and theology.

Soccer Signups CAA, the Christian Athletic Association, is taking signups for its Spring Soccer season, which runs from February 15 - May 17. Leagues are available for boys and girls ages 3 - 18. Signups are open right up until February 15, and you can get more information at www.playcaa.org.

Yearbook News Submit your suggestions to name the SJCS yearbook to Mrs. Singh. A winner will be chosen by the office staff and will receive a free yearbook for this year. You may also order yearbooks at this time via the online order system. Contact Mrs. Singh for more info. Lastly, if you have pictures from this year featuring SJCS students, please send them to Mrs. Singh at bsingh@sjchristian.org.

Tiger Tracks E3 Students Finishing Up this Week For the past three weeks, we have been excited to welcome students from E3 Academy in Inchon, South Korea to the SJCS campus. 10 children in grades 1-6 have attended our classes and participated in the school community. Tuesday will be there last day with us, and we know the bonds of friendship we have built will stretch across the Pacific. We will be holding a special farewell party for the students at 2:30pm on the elementary school playground to say goodbye. We look forward to a continued relationship with E3 in the years ahead!

2nd Quarter Honor Roll Attached to the Tiger Tracks today is the 2nd Quarter Honor Roll. Congratulations to our students for their hard work over the course of the first half of the year. Students with a GPA higher than 3.7 qualify for High Honors status, while students with a GPA higher than 3.3 qualify for Honors recognition. As per our school privacy policy, the honor roll attachment will not appear with the online version of the Tiger Tracks, so as to protect our students identities.

Scrip Orders Due Friday Take inventory of your Scrip this week and see what you need to purchase. Get your orders in online through the link on the SJCS website. Orders will come in next week.

Teacher Tales Check this section each week for exciting stories of teachers doing great things in the classrooms of San Jose Christian School. Living in Silicon Valley means that we live our lives under a huge influence of technology and constant searching about the role it should play in education. We have encouraged our teachers to consider what Christian school should look like in the 21st Century, and we have dedicated mentor teachers on staff who help their colleagues find ways to use technology to engage their students and help them consider their place in this world as Christians. One of those mentor teachers is Ms. Rachel Diephouse. As our middle school Language Arts teacher, Ms. Diephouse helps our students learn to be good readers, writers, and thinkers. That used to be a rather narrowly defined task, but the world of technology has broadened the definition of what it means to be literate. Students need to be able to express themselves with a variety of media and to discern messages in more than just written form. Ms. Diephouse cultivates these talents with readings, projects, and experiences that involve meaningful questions about the lives they live now and the futures they are shaping for themselves. Ms. Diephouse has also become a de facto spokesperson for our school when it comes to articulating our philosophy and approach to technology to prospective families. She first started using the slogan, “Teach, not ban,” and now that simple phrase has become a school wide mantra that guides our decisions about our use and implementation of technology. But Ms. D’s impact is felt beyond the walls of our campus too. A voracious twitter user, Ms. D has cultivated a Professional Learning Network of other educators who are as excited about education as she is. She blogs regularly about her experiences in the classroom, and she has become a presenter at education technology conferences, sharing her successes with teachers all over the state. For all of these accomplishments, Ms. Diephouse was recently honored as the Silicon Valley Emerging Educator of the Year and the California Emerging Educator of the Year. Congratulations to Ms. D! We are proud of you and your accomplishments, and we’re blessed to have you as a part of our faculty at SJCS. Said Ms. D in one of her recent blog posts, “I'm thankful to be making a difference in kids' lives every day. They're my kids. I love them. I want what's best for them. I want to see them become difference makers in the world. And I want to see them make that difference now. Today. Tomorrow. When they're twenty-five. Their whole lives.” We couldn’t agree more!

Tiger Sports Spotlight Girls Basketball The girls started their playoff run against a strong and quick passing Conerstone team. It was pretty lopsided until the third quarter when the girls fought and clawed back to being down 9 points. The team showed a lot of heart and resolve in the entire game before losing to Cornerstone 43-29. SJCS 24 Valley Christian 26. The second playoff game was in the consolation bracket. The Tigers came out with a lot of poise on offense, and pressure on defense. We were able to frustrate Valley to making careless fouls and turnovers. We battled back and forth with the lead changing hands a few times. We got the ball back with 10 seconds on the clock and opted for a quick hitter out of our offense, instead of letting Valley setup their defense. In the end we got a couple of good looks at the basket but couldn’t get tying bucket to fall. The best was the looks on the girls faces that were ready to go another quarter against Valley. Mr. Webb even jokingly asked the Valley coach if we could keep playing. Even though the result wasn’t what we envisioned, we know that the team with the most heart and passion was wearing orange and blue.

Boys Basketball The Boys Team made the playoffs but had to miss their game due to scheduling conflicts. This will not be the last game, however, as they will be taking on the teachers and staff for a “friendly” game on Friday 1/31. They will be facing an all-star team with a mindset of Paul Westhead’s run and gun offense. This should be a lot of fun, so please check it out.

New Sports Season Boys Soccer and Girls Volleyball start this week. SJCS is looking for a responsible head coach for the Boys Volleyball program.
