Jenn’s Pen by: Mrs. Jennifer Thompson The month of November is notorious for being the month of thankfulness. That is one of the reasons that I love this time of year, although I believe I personally can practice gratitude a whole lot more. When I was at Willow Glen Creamery the other day-yes, I enjoyed a yummy treatI saw that there is a gratitude wall for people to put up sticky notes for things for which they are thankful. Cool idea, but as I read the notes, I thought of how superficial many of them were. God has done and continues to do tremendous things for each one of us, but we often take those things for granted. So, I challenge you as a family (and me!) to do your own family “sticky wall” of gratitude this month. These can be great conversation starters and reminders of God’s goodness daily. Be cheerful no matter what; pray all the time; thank God no matter what happens. This is the way God wants you who belong to Christ Jesus to live. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 The Message

Attendance Reminder Please be sure that you are aware of the SJCS tardy and attendance policies that are found in the Parent/Student handbook available online. The state of California has strict laws regarding the number of absences allowed each year. SJCS wants to be sure that all students benefit from a full day of instruction everyday. In the case of illness or excused absence, please be sure to inform the office.

Parent Teacher Conferences Parents, please look for an email in the next 24 hours confirming your date and time for your Parent Teacher Conference. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Singh in the office. Remember, MIDDLE SCHOOL students need to be at the PTC.

Fill the Barrels!

Once again, SJCS is partnering with City Team Ministries to help those in need. Every day 1 in 4 families are turned away from local food pantries simply because there is not enough food. By joining City Team in this food drive, we can make a difference and Fill the Pantry so that no one has to go to bed hungry. Attached to the Tiger Tracks is a bag from City Team along with a flyer letting you know what food is needed in the Food Pantry. Please be as generous as possible.

Yearbooks! It’s never too early to think about yearbooks! We are partnering with TreeRing once again for our yearbook. Attached is a flyer with information about how to purchase and customize your yearbook. If you purchase before November 30, 2015, you will receive 5% off! If you have taken pictures of various events at school (WAT, class parties, field trips, etc.) please submit them to Mrs. Singh for possible inclusion in the yearbook.

Annual SJCS Book Fair - Help Needed The Scholastic Book Fair is coming to SJCS on 11/17-11/23. Buying books for your children earns us new books for the SJCS library as well. You may also purchase books for specific classrooms to be enjoyed by all the students. Please sign up here to work a sales shift at the event!

Tiger Tracks Teacher Tales Check this section each week for exciting stories about teachers doing great things in the classrooms of San Jose Christian School.

Teacher Tales—Spotlight On 8th Grade Language Arts by Miss Diephouse I just wanted to share with you a snapshot of 8th grade English. Last Monday we started looking at Robert Frost’s “Mending Wall.” In this poem, Frost tells the story of two neighbors going to repair their rock fence after a winter freeze has made the rocks fall down. He offers two points of view: 1) "good fences make good neighbors" and 2) "something there is that doesn't love a wall." We started by examining the literal meaning of this poem. Literally, they're repairing a fence. The neighbor likes fences, much like we do. There's a sense of keeping things out and keeping things in. On the other hand, the speaker has something in him that doesn't like the idea of walls. I shared how the number one thing I miss about living in Michigan is "life without fences." We could see our neighbors' houses and even played football on a "field" that spanned 4-5 backyards. Then we explored the figurative meaning of this poem. For some of us, we like putting up fences in our relationships. It makes us feel safe and secure. However, others of us don't like fences. We let people in. We spent time last week drawing our figurative neighborhoods. We placed ourselves in a house and then surrounded ourselves with the people in our life "neighborhoods." Some people placed neighbors closer than others. Some people built high fences and some people built short fences, and some people had no fences at all. I encouraged students to think about the people they have close by their houses. Are they Christians? Non-Christians? Should we have both? Are we investing in the people we placed close to us and being good friends to them? Are there people that we should let in a little more? I encourage you to ask your children about their "neighborhoods" and if they love fences. Encourage them as they seek to build friendships with people both now and in the future. Continue to be involved in their friendships. Thank you for sharing your students with me. I love hearing their thoughts and discussing these life questions with them.

Special Section of the Tiger Tracks for our Preschool “Tiger Cubs” This is a friendly reminder that this Thursday & Friday, Nov. 12th& 13th, is Parent/Teacher conference time. If you haven’t signed up for an appointment with your child’s teacher, please do so ASAP. Here are 5 questions to help you with a successful meeting with your child’s teacher:

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

"How is my child doing socially?" "What do you think are my child's particular strengths … and areas for potential growth?" "What can I do at home to support what you’re doing in the classroom?" "Are there any question you'd like to ask me?" "How and when do you best prefer to communicate with me?"
