Tiger Tracks Special Section of the Tiger Tracks for our Preschool “Tiger Cubs” How You Can Help Your Child Be a Successful Problem Solver What you can do: Part of encouraging problem solving is helping your child to become both a fluent and flexible thinker. Fluent thinkers have the ability to come up with ideas; flexible thinkers are able to see many possibilities or view objects or situations in new ways. Just as problem solving takes place all day long, so can the activities you do to encourage your child to be a creative thinker. Here are a few suggestions: •

Brainstorm. Invite your child to be a fluent thinker by asking her to respond to questions that have many right answers. Incorporate these questions into the interests she is pursuing and the situations she is in. For instance, if you and your children were having a discussion about night time, you might ask her to think of everything that lights up in the night, all the people who work at night, or all the things she'd like to do if she stayed up all night.

Reflect. Help your child to be a flexible thinker by asking him to comment on specific objects or situations in his life. For instance, when you and your child are reading a book and the boy on the cover looks sad—What are some reasons he might look this way?

Challenge. Encourage your child to practice critical and logical thinking by asking her open-ended questions, such as "How many ways can you sort these blocks?" "How many different ways can you make a building using these blocks?" "How would the building be different if you used blocks that were all the same size?

Teacher Tales Check this section each week for exciting stories about teachers doing great things in the classrooms of San Jose Christian School.

Teacher Tales—Spotlight on Miss Bri

We recently added a variety of activities to our Preschool enrichment program, and we would like to focus on Miss Bri and the work she is doing —we are very proud! Miss Bri has been leading a dance class on Wednesday afternoons for our 2-4 year olds. You may have seen our littlest students in their leotards—they are adorable! She has also been leading a “cooking and health” class with the three and four year olds. She teaches kids about the different types of foods, how we cook with them, and what they taste like. For example, she recently had a unit on various types of cheeses—what a great way to build vocabulary and educate students’ palates!
