WAT Version 10.0 Proves Another Great Day For the 10th consecutive year, the SJCS Walk-a-Thon provided a day of community fun and much needed fundraising for the school’s student programs. All those in attendance were treated to great weather, great fellowship, the first-ever SJCS cardboard arcade, and Big Ed’s tasty BBQ. Several members of the planning committee for the first Walk-a-Thon also showed up to be honored and to celebrate the enduring legacy of the event. The 2013 WAT raised over $51,000 for SJCS, money that will be used to offset the costs of the multi-day field trips in grades 4-8; support the music, drama, and sports programs; provide equipment for playgrounds and classrooms; and more. In 10 years, the WAT has blessed the school tremendously, bringing in over $450,000 to benefit our students. Thank you to everyone who organized the event, volunteered to help, and attended. Welcome Baby Intlekofer! The SJCS community grew by one last week. Friday morning, Mr. Intlekofer and his wife welcomed a son, Joel David, into the world. Joel was 9 pounds, 3 ounces and 20 inches long. Mr. I. will be out of the office for a couple of weeks spending time with his wife and son.
Promote the Open House SJCS is holding an Open House for prospective families on Saturday, October 19 from 1pm - 3pm. The Open House will give parents and students a great feel for what SJCS is like as they tour the campus and meet our teachers and administrators. Now we need your help! Attached to the Tiger Tracks is an invitation card for our Open House. Please take the time to invite a friend who would be a good fit for our school. It could be a relative or someone you know from church or work. Write your name on the card, and when your guest comes to the Open House, you will receive a “Recommend One” SJCS Camelback water bottle as a thank-you gift. Have more than one family you’d like to invite? Extra cards are available in the office.

Tiger Tracks High School Info Night
Each year, we host a high school information night for our students and parents. The event is geared for 7th & 8th grade families, but 6th graders are welcome also. On Tuesday 10/8 at 6:30pm, Mr. Meester will present an overview of the admissions process for private high schools, and we will feature a panel of SJCS graduates attending various private high schools. These students will give the families in attendance an inside look at life in these schools and answer questions from the audience.
October Box Tops
Bring in your Box Tops during the month of October as part of a classroom competition. Trim the Box Top labels from the packaging of a wide range of household products, and SJCS will receive money from these companies. The winning class gets a party. Funds raised through Box Tops for Education are used for campus beautification.
Absentee Homework Center in Auditorium If your student is absent and you need to pick up homework materials, you can visit the Homework Center in the credenza at the back of the auditorium.
IXL Challenge Update Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Halfway through the 4-week challenge, the 8th graders have closed the gap on their 7th grade challengers, but the younger generation still leads by almost 1,500 points. The current standings are: Grade 7: 22,541 Grade 8: 21,095 2 weeks left to determine math supremacy!
Teacher Tales Check this section each week for exciting stories of teachers doing great things in the classrooms of San Jose Christian School. Mrs. Jennifer Baham’s 8th Grade Bible class covers the four gospels in detail. Students study each book with an eye on the author, audience, and unique characteristics in effort to grow their ability to interpret the Bible clearly and independently. For example, after learning about John Mark's life and the broken relationship he suffered with his mentor, Paul, the class had a greater understanding of how God used John Mark to write a gospel to the persecuted Christians who were enduring great suffering in the early church. Last week the class started its study of John's gospel. John, more poetic than the Synoptic Gospels, includes seven "I Am" statements of Jesus. Jesus compared himself to things people see every day, such as light and bread, to give his listeners insight into who He is. In class, students found the seven "I Am" statements using a Bible concordance and placed them on a grid. Then, as Mrs. Baham read about each statement, the students took turns drawing artistic impressions of one of the seven statements. The grids were passed around the room as each new description was given. At the end of the period, students looked at the many drawings on their page and shared unique ideas colored by their classmates. The group also took time to think about which of Jesus’ "I Am" statements meant the most to each of them personally. Activities like this one arise out of careful planning and consideration. One technique that teachers use in their planning is essential questions, questions that serve as underpinnings for the entire student experience. Mrs. Baham uses the following essential questions as she builds her Bible class: 1. How does the Bible apply to us today? 2. What does it mean to have faith? 3. What does it mean to know God? 4. How do I interpret the Bible? 5. What difference does it make that I know God's love for me? 6. Describe community. What is it and how do we experience it?
Tiger Sports Spotlight Softball Last Tuesday, the softball team did a great job swinging their bats against the Campbell Christian Eagles. Playing at home with a great group of fans helped the girls bring their hitting spirit to the game and notch a 16-5 victory. Excellent defense held the visitors to only 5 runs. Nice job Tigers! The girls continued to hit hard on Thursday against Los Gatos Christian, but it just was not enough to get a rhythm going against the Lions in a 17-3 loss. Our defense worked hard to combat the driving hits, and we had a photo moment when Naomi caught a huge fly ball hit deep to right center to take away a potentially big hit.
Flag Football Having just won a game on the last play, the Tigers felt what it’s like to lose on the last play, falling 35-34 to Campbell Christian. The offense played great led by Atheer who played one of his best games. Dylan, Mike, Josh, and Joe highlighted the scores. We split the season series with Campbell 1-1. Against Los Gatos Christian, the Tigers had a chance to win the game on the last drive. Coach Webb cost the boys good field position with a late-game penalty, and the Tigers fell by a score of 24-18. Despite the loss, our fourth graders really played big, getting some great tackles on the kickoff coverage.
Cross Country This is the final week of practice for the Tiger harriers. The runners have shown tremendous growth this season, both in their endurance and team work. It has been a real privilege for Mrs. Reeves to coach them. After training Monday Thursday, the team will participate in the BACSAL Division Finals in Danville this Friday. Runners will leave school at 1:30pm and be back to campus between 6:30 and 7:00pm. The team party will be on Wednesday, October 23 from 3:30pm - 5:00pm. Softball
