Cardboard Challenge Thrills Students Friday was a great day at school as we hosted the first ever SJCS Cardboard Challenge! Student banded together in multi-grade teams to demonstrate creativity, teamwork, ingenuity, and enthusiasm as they designed and built a host of different cardboard arcade games including: Smack Attack, Skee Ball, Flying Tigers, Air Hockey, Hot Shot, Blockin Billiards, Plinko, and more. Throughout the build, it was great to see student initiative and student problem solving as the children completed tasks for their teams. Later in the afternoon, the JK and K students came by to test out the games and see how they worked. Event organizer, Rachel Diephouse noted that events like the Cardboard Challenge, “really foster student creativity in the classroom, something we are passionate about at SJCS.” The games will be ready to play at the Walk-a-Thon this Saturday. For a preview of what you will see, visit http://vimeo.com/sjchristian/ sjcscardboardchallenge or click on the video below.

Tiger Tracks Anti-Bullying Assembly Recap: The Power of One On September 19, SJCS hosted two anti-bullying assemblies for our students called “The Power of One.” The assemblies helped us create a common language we can use to discuss bullying. Not all conflict between people is bullying, but we take these problems seriously. As we think about this issue, a helpful definition of bullying is: Intentional, repeated, hurtful actions by a person in a position of power against someone else. In a series of skits, the actors and our students illustrated the 3 key parties in a bullying incident: The Bully, The Victim, and the Bystander. Harmful behaviors from Bystanders include watching an incident as a form of entertainment, ignoring it as it happens, or actually cheering on the Bully—any of which make the Bystander just as guilty as the Bully. A proper response to bullying means standing up for a victim by telling the bully to stop, telling the victim to walk away, or telling an adult about the incident. Each bystander has “The Power of One” to put a stop to bullying. All of the students made an anti-bullying pledge at the end of the assemblies, and they will sign a large pledge poster as a reminder of this promise.

October Box Tops Bring in your Box Tops during the month of October as part of a classroom competition. Trim the Box Top labels from the packaging of a wide range of household products, and SJCS will receive money from these companies. The winning class gets a party. Funds raised through Box Tops for Education are used for campus beautification.

Teacher Tales Check this section each week for exciting stories of teachers doing great things in the classrooms of San Jose Christian School. Miss Laverman's fourth grade class studies California throughout the year. The students begin by looking at the geography of our state. We discuss how God created diverse regions in the state of California, and we focus on four main areas: The Central Valley, The Coast, The Mountains, and The Desert. The fourth graders learn the importance of each region and what makes them so unique. The culmination of this unit is making the 3D models of California. In groups, the students are tasked to use their creativity and teamwork to sculpt the state and its four main regions. After the salt dough is dry, they paint the regions in different colors. Included in their maps are the states, countries, and oceans that surround California. We also include things that every map should have: a map key and a compass. The fourth graders have had a lot of fun working together to create very colorful displays!

September Chapel Recap

If your student is absent and you need to pick up homework materials, you can visit the Homework Center in the credenza at the back of the auditorium.

The September chapels at SJCS focused on the topic of worship in the context of our new identity in Christ.

IXL News If you are enjoying the IXL website as a math resource for your children, you may want to check out the IXL Math Practice app for iPad, available through the Apple App Store. From the IXL Challenge: Hear Ye! Hear Ye! After one week, the points for this 4-week challenge were as follows: Grade 7: 12,140 Grade 8: 10,080 8th grade, show those 7th graders which class rules on campus! You can do it!

In Middle School Chapel, 8th graders delivered a narrative of worship throughout the Bible and explained how we are still part of this worship story today. Groups of students then discussed different ways in which we worship and show our love for God. A word cloud showed everyone the results. Elementary chapel was led by the students from Kindergarten and 1st Grade. Those students shared Bible verses with the group, along with Hebrew terms related to different aspects of worship. The whole elementary school joined together for songs that showcased the different types of worship as well.

Tiger Sports Spotlight Softball The Tigers played excellent softball on Tuesday 9/24 against the Achiever Christian Hawks, taking home a hard fought 4-0 victory. Our pitching continues to be the strength of our defense. The players are beginning to connect their bats with the ball, and we look forward to seeing that bat strength continue to improve over the next few weeks.

Flag Football Last Tuesday, the Tiger football team lost to Achiever 24-18 after giving up an early score. Atheer and Joe connected on several pass plays, but our offense stalled in the red zone on a few key drives. Josh, Dwyer, and Atheer anchored a strong defensive line to make it tough on the Hawks, but in the end we came up just short. Thursday’s game got the Tigers back on track, notching their most thrilling victory of the season, 20-19 over Baymonte. The linemen played their best game all year, and so did Atheer, hitting all but 3 of his passes. On the last play of the game, Dylan scored a TD on a pass from Atheer, and the Tigers went for the win with a 2-point conversion. On a trick play, Dylan lofted up the ball for Joe, who caught it for the win in our own version of “The Catch.” Great game, Tigers!

Cross Country Last week’s meet at Montgomery Hill was cancelled, but the team decided to make the best of it and had its own competition. Dylan came in first place, completing his 2mile run in 17 minutes. With strong kicks at the end, Molly and Braeden came across the finish line neck in neck. David came in next and then Elaine, both completing the quarter mile hill without stopping. Way to go Tigers!
