Tiger Stripes Reflections on Who We Are by Mr. Den Boer Core Values Part 3
What exactly are our fundamental beliefs and guiding principles? This is the third of six articles where I will offer some ideas stemming from meetings with Board, staff, and community members. I welcome your comments at bdenboer@sjchristian.org.
!
Core Value #3: The Whole Child: We value each child as a unique workmanship of God himself. We develop the wholeness of each child’s character, academic progress, effort, physical abilities and artistic expression.
!
Do we at SJCS actually live this value? Ask us (SJCS staff, faculty, and administration) how this core value comes alive in our work and in our relationship with you and your children. Challenge us. Keep us accountable.

Tips for Praying With Children
• Heart to Heart: Share with your child a time that you prayed and received the answer in a surprising or dramatic way. • Pray on the Spot: The next time your child comes to you with a problem or worry, instead of saying, "I will pray for you," do it right then. Even if it is a short prayer, you will be demonstrating the important principle that God wants us to cast the care of all our concerns on Him and pray about everything. (See 1 Peter 5:7 and Philippians 4:6-7.)
Pray a Blessing Praying a prayer of blessing on your child's life each night at bedtime (or other times of the day) can bring comfort, reassurance, and hope to your child's heart. Pray for God's favor, protection, and peace. Thank the Lord for something specific - a gift, talent, or quality in your child. You can use a Bible blessing such as Psalm 5:12 or Numbers 6:25 or speak from your heart. When you pray scriptural blessings, you are speaking words that match God's desire for your child.
! ! ! !
Thanksgiving An essential part of prayer is simply saying, "Thank You, God." Blessing Basket: Fill a small basket with little slips of paper. Encourage family members to write or draw pictures of things for which they are thankful. Best Part of the Day: Ask each child to say a sentence prayer, thanking God for the best part of her day. Family Journal: Keep a notebook full of things for which the family is thankful.
Teacher Tales Check this section each week for exciting stories about teachers doing great things in the classrooms of San Jose Christian School.
Check Mate! In Mrs. Coetsee’s Life Skills class, students have been studying logical thinking through an exploration of the game of chess. Some students were already familiar with chess, while others had to learn it from scratch. When everyone felt comfortable with the basic moves of the game, the class held a chess tournament.
!
After several rounds, the “Final Four” consisted of Frankie playing Dylan, and Calvin playing Justin. The winners moved on to the final round, and it was time for the culminating match everyone had been waiting for: Dylan versus Calvin! Both of these players are excellent at their art. After the final match, though, Dylan’s king remained unscathed. Calvin’s king had been cornered and it was “Check Mate!” Congratulations Dylan, chess champion!
Tiger Tracks October Box Tops Bring in your Box Tops during the month of October as part of a classroom competition. Trim the Box Top labels from the packaging of a wide range of household products, and SJCS will receive money from these companies. The winning class gets a party. Funds raised through Box Tops for Education are used for campus beautification.

Flag Football
The Tigers ended their season by playing what was perhaps their best overall game. Facing the first place team, Los Gatos Christian School, the Tigers fell in a close game. The defense came to play, stifling the high powered offense of Los Gatos. Ryan C. returned an interception all the way back for a touchdown to give the Tigers momentum going into halftime. The offense moved the ball well throughout the game, but in the end the size and depth of Los Gatos was too much for the young Tigers. Joe W. ended the game (and his Tiger football career) with a 60+ yard touchdown run! Thank you to everyone who helped make this season possible. All those who volunteered are greatly appreciated. The boys worked very hard this year and showed a lot of improvement. Great job Tigers!

Cross Country Our XCountry team has a full week of practice. These Tigers continue to prepare for the division finals on November 7. If you are a XCountry parent and can help with off campus practices please contact Coach Reeves at sreeves@sjchristian.org.
!
Softball Thank you to all our fans for the incredible support on Thursday. The girls played an amazing game and we could not be more proud of their efforts. The Tigers now move to the post season! We entered the playoffs in 2nd place for the southern division. We look forward to the games ahead. Our girls are playing dynamite defense and their bats are on fire!
