This past summer, I began a year-long Fellows program through the Van Lunen Center at Calvin College. A program for Christian school leaders, the Van Lunen course will allow me to put into immediate practice the skills that I am learning in a practical way at SJCS. My first very intense week in Michigan this summer has already impacted my thinking and skill set. Several times, as a reflection activity, we were asked to make a LIST OF 5. List 5 things that you want to learn in this program. List 5 words to describe your school. List 5 ways that you can encourage a teacher. It was great. A terrific way to think, focus, and be clear. Listing three is too easy, and listing ten can be hard, but five just takes a little more thinking. So, here is a SJCS list of Five: Five Characteristics that describe a SJCS students: 1. An active learner 2. An effective communicator 3. A growing believer 4. A wise decision maker 5. A collaborative worker Wait. These are five of the SJCS Throughlines. And these are DEFINITELY the outcomes that we desire for EVERY SJCS student. So, just a bit of homework for you. **READ about the SJCS Throughlines. (I will be choosing one a month to Blog about, so we can share thoughts.) **Start a fun family conversation over a List of Five. (I am happy to share some starters if you need them.)

Screenagers this Thursday Night Every parent should plan on joining us this Thursday for our screening of the film Screenagers. This award-winning documentary speaks to the many challenges faced by families as they try to navigate the digital world of the internet, social media, and video games. This is NOT the world we adults grew up in, and it is vitally important for us to understand what is going on in the minds of students and teenagers. This will be an extremely valuable conversation-starter, and we are privileged to be able to screen this film at our school. The screening is FREE for SJCS parents (5th-8th grade students will watch it on Friday during school), and costs $10 for non-SJCS attendees. Pick up your tickets in the office today.

SJC Preschool is a Nut Safe Environment Please remember that we are a nut safe school. Food with any kind of tree nut or peanut should not be brought to school.
"W" Sitting What is "W" sitting? "W" sitting refers to the position in which a child will sit on their bottom with their legs bent and turned outwards. If you face the child, their legs form a "w." What is wrong with "W" sitting? Young children can often be found to be on the floor playing, sitting in what is called the "w" sit, where their legs form a "W" if you look at their legs. It is comfortable position, yet it can affect a child's ability to rotate from side to side. In addition, it can affect a child's joints and muscles. It is often helpful to encourage your child to sit with their legs in a different position.
Classroom Supplies Please remember to bring your child's classroom supplies if you have not done so yet (roll of paper towels, a container of cleaning wipes, and a box of tissue).
Teacher Tales Check this section each week for exciting stories about teachers doing great things in the classrooms of San Jose Christian School. Focus on Jr. Kindergarten --by Dave Intlekofer We’ve had a great start to the year as we celebrate our theme of SPEAK LIFE. One teacher who exemplifies encouragement and speaking life to her students is Mrs. Van Ewyk. As seen at her back to school night presentation, Mrs. Van Ewyk focuses on celebrating the gifts of every student. She spoke with each parent about the strengths they see in their children. Last week, she also had the students draw a self-portrait (be sure to see them in her classroom window) and talked about what makes each of them unique and special. Junior Kindergarten is a great transition to our “big school.” The class helps students hone the academic, social, and emotional skills needed to be successful in their academic career. This year, we are excited to have more “preschool alumni” in our JK than we ever have before! We are also thrilled to have Mrs. Subity as a full-time aide in our JK class. Mrs. Van Ewyk and Mrs. Subity lead their class with joy, enthusiasm, and kindness. One parent who attended Mrs. Van Ewyk’s back to school presentation emailed me to “tell on” Mrs. V, saying, “Parent night for JK was OUTSTANDING. I appreciate Suzie’s demeanor, smile, and joy.” Have you spoken life to your child’s teacher yet?
