Jenn’s Pen - Unplug! by: Mrs. Jennifer Thompson Are you up for a challenge? Give up cellphones, iPads, laptops and all technology for a full day. Just ONE day. Disconnect from online routines and enjoy a day free from digital distractions. Engage in authentic, face-to-face conversations. Laugh. Tell stories. Try a new game. Share ideas. Connect with each other in a personal way. Social media is not going anywhere, and I’m pretty sure the world won’t end if we take an extra day to respond to texts or emails. It will be a test for us all, but it will be a wonderful way for adults to remember our childhoods when we ran and biked the neighborhood, played at the park, or had a family game night. SJCS has set aside MARCH 10 as #OneDayOffline. Join with us as we commit to disconnect all day! To finish this article, click here: https://jennspenblog.wordpress.com/2016/02/

25mph

Read Across America

Please remember to respect the 25 mph speed limit on all of the streets around SJCS. The safety of our community is important. (P.S. A couple neighbors have noticed some speeders entering the school and have called the Campbell police. Just be careful and remain ticket free!)

This Wednesday is Read Across America Day. In honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday, schools all across the country will dedicate this day to celebrating reading, and so will we! Please encourage your children to read and send them to school with a great book. Also, model reading for them and read with them! Our teachers have some great activities and guest readers planned, so be ready for a fantastic day.

Bring Us Your Boxtops We’re driving for another round of Boxtops in March, and the class competition continues. Bring in your boxtops by March 25th for credit.

SPRING TOWN HALL! March 7| 6:30pm Our Annual Spring Town Hall is taking place the evening March 7, in the Auditorium at 6:30pm. All parents are encouraged to attend and hear an update from our administration. Save the date!

Tiger Tracks #OneDayOffline

Teacher Tales Spotlight on Preschool One of our Throughlines is that we want our students to be Growing Believers, and our preschool rooms are a great example of how that happens! Miss Cat has made “prayer sticks to help students learn how to pray for others. Each prayer stick has a picture of a staff or faculty member on top, and the students (ages 2-4) practice praying for a specific person each day. What a fun way to teach students how to think of others and to pray!

Coming March 10th, we are going to have a completely tech-free day. As part of our efforts to encourage a healthy relationship with technology, we are dedicating this day to offline experiences. This means no internet, no computers, no cell phones, no video games, no tablets, etc. Teachers will not give homework, and we encourage all families to plan an evening of family bonding that does not involve technology (play games, go on a family field trip, read together, etc.). All faculty and staff will be tech-free for the day as well. For safety reasons, we will still operate the school phone line, but that is the only technology that will be used on that day. Please plan on joining us (even during your work day if possible!) in this fun-filled effort.

Yearbook Updates Remember to get online and order your 2015-16 SJCS yearbooks. If you have any pictures of students or school events, please send them to Beverly Singh (bsing@sjchristian.org) who assembles the book.

Coaching Opportunity SJCS athletics is looking for a boys volleyball coach. If you know of anyone or are interested in coaching this upcoming season, please contact Alex Bost at abost@sjchristian.org

Moms in Prayer Please submit your prayer requests to the SJCS Moms in Prayer group via email at sjcsmip@gmail.com.

Tiger Tracks Tiger Cubs Check this section each week for exciting news about our youngest Tigers! Afternoon Enrichment Over the past few months, our students in the afternoon have been learning different languages. Students, whom we affectionately call the "non-nappers," have been studying Spanish and Sign Language. Students have learned colors and letters in Sign Language and short phrases and colors in Spanish. It is amazing to see how quickly they pick it up!

Reading Challenge This semester, all SJCS students (infants through 8th grade) are participating in a reading challenge. Our goal is to read over 150,000 pages by the end of the year! In the past, we have tracked our AR points and given gift card rewards at the end of the year to those students who reached their goal. This year, we want to come together as a community to have a group goal, and the prize (if we reach our goal) will be a reading celebration on the last day of school! Students in 2nd-8th grades will track their progress through AR quizzes, and additional points earned beyond their quarter AR goals will count towards the group goal as well. Students in PS-1st grades will track their points through number of books read, and books read by parents TO children count! Teachers will gather “book counts” periodically as the semester progresses. Reading is the single most beneficial academic task a child (or adult) can complete. Please model being a lifelong reader for your children!

Service Project Launches Next Friday | March 4 We are thrilled to announce that we will again be joining 4Others and FeedMyStarvingChildren in purchasing and packing food for the needy. Last year we raised enough money to provide 30,000 meals for starving children around the world! This year, Legacy Christian, Achiever Christian, and Bethel Lutheran School will join us in the service effort, which will culminate in the largest food-packing day yet for our county. The fundraising portion of the project will run exactly like last year (filling M&M tubes with quarters), and there will be “friendly competitions” between the classes (infant-8th). We will officially begin collecting donations two weeks from today, and teachers will collect $1 from students (to purchase their first M&M tube) next week. On April 25th, students in 5th-8th grade will participate in the packing effort. More information will be sent home next week, but for now, start saving those quarters!

The Auction Is Coming! One of the most enjoyable events for the SJCS community every year is the annual auction. This year’s theme is GOING PLACES, DOING THINGS. The event will be on Saturday April 9 at 6pm at the Campbell Community Center. We hope to see all of you there. The auction supports special projects at school and the funds we raise help SJCS offer our students outstanding 21st Century education. Attached to the Tiger Tracks today, you will find an auction donation form to use if you have something to contribute to the event.
