Tiger Stripes Reflections on Who We Are by: Bart Den Boer Choosing a New Superintendent For this first Tiger Stripes of the new year, I have the pleasure to announce that SJCS has chosen its next superintendent, who will begin her work at SJCS this coming summer. Jennifer Thompson, currently serving as preschool/elementary principal at Westminster Christian School in Miami, FL. (wcsmiami.org), accepted SJCS’s offer just before Christmas break. SJCS’s Search Committee brought a unanimous recommendation to our Board of Trustees, which without exception expressed its confidence in Jenn as the right person for the job. Why such strong support for Jenn? Both the Search Committee and the Board see her as someone who can articulate SJCS’s mission to the community and continue the work on our recently developed strategic plan. She comes to us with more than 15 years experience in her current role. Jenn is married to her husband Ed and is the mother of three grown children; one girl and two boys, one of which lives right here in San Jose. You will be hearing much more from (and about) Jenn as her time of service here draws closer. Meanwhile, we bless God for providing SJCS with such a fine leader for the years ahead!

We are very excited to have 11 students from E3 Language School joining us for the month of January. Ranging in age from 1st-5th grade, our guest students have come all the way from Incheon, Korea. This is the second year of our partnership with E3 Language School, and we are so grateful for the friendships and cultural experiences that have already happened. Great things are happening at SJCS, and we’re thrilled to welcome 11 new students this week! We have eight new Preschool students and three Elementary School students beginning with us. Please be sure to introduce yourself if you see a new face, and don’t forget to promote our January 24th open house so we can keep this positive momentum!
Tiger Tracks Extended Care Rate Increase Effective January 5, 2015 Effective January 5, the hourly fee for extended care increased from $5.00 to $6.00 per hour. This first increase in several years is necessary to cover wages and fixed costs associated with this valuable program. Thank you for your understanding. January Series Lectures Every January, SJCS serves as a satellite location for a series of lectures from Calvin College. The talks are from renowned speakers and cover a wide range of topics. Re-Enrollment is Just Around the Corner January 15 SJCS will launch re-enrollment for the 2015-2016 school year. Keep this date in mind for planning and paperwork.
Travel To the Holy Land in June? Are you interested in traveling to the Holy Land with SJCS faculty in June? You are welcome to join a 15-day biblical study tour led by Interim Superintendent Bart Den Boer, a veteran Bible teacher and Holy Land tour leader. Sponsored by the Reformed Church In America, the tour will be the last two weeks in June and cost about $3800. Contact Bart at bdenboer@sjchristian.org for more information.

Tiger Cubs|Preschool News! Welcome back to Preschool! We are very excited to have some new friends begin Preschool this week. We want to welcome all new families and hope for a joyous 2015. We are also pleased to congratulate a number of students who have moved up to the next class. Everyone has been working so hard this year...keep up the amazing work! Soccer Shots is back! Chess Club Begins Next Week! Demo This Thursday at Lunch Starting next Tuesday (Jan 13), SJCS will be hosting the Chess Wizards—a chess training club designed for students in K-8th grades. Classes will take place weekly (on Tuesdays from 3:15-4:15), and the cost of the program will be $135 (for all 9 sessions—advance payment required—payment information is on the flyer). No prior knowledge of chess is required, yet students of all skill levels will be challenged at their level of play and will learn valuable strategies and techniques. Come and learn the most popular board game of all time! Please turn in the attached registration flyer to Mr. I, or email him with any questions. We will hold a chess open house and demo (with one of the Chess Wizard teachers) on Thursday during lunch recess (12:00) in room 19. All grades K-8 are welcome to come!

That still gives all of our school families three more weeks invite friends to come and learn about the outstanding experiences we have to offer. We want you to share your story of outstanding Christian education and irresistible Christian community that’s happening here at SJCS. When you tell your friends, invite them to our Open House event Saturday, January 24 from 10am-1pm.
Sign Up today for SJCS Parent “Word of Mouth” Training! Next Tuesday, January 13 will be your first opportunity for SJCS Word of Mouth Training! Betsy Phillips will be training parents on how to tell their SJCS story and how to invite families to SJCS. This is a critical piece in growing our enrollment.
