Annual Drive Progress This year’s annual financial drive, Pieces of the Puzzle, is targeting specific aspects of the SJCS budget. These include financial assistance for families in need, our Rosetta Stone foreign language program, our auditorium renovation, our preschool expansion to include infant care, and teacher improvement. To date, the drive has raised $140,000 to benefit the students of SJCS. Our stretch goal for the drive is $300,000 $400,000, so we are almost halfway there. If you have not yet made your gift to Pieces of the Puzzle, please do so today. There are many ways to give beyond cash, and you can contact the office for more information. Thank you in advance for your help and dedication to SJCS.

Tuition Gift Certificates Now Available Save money for the future, and buy tuition at this year’s prices! Attached to the Tiger Tracks today, you will find the details of a new tuition gift certificate program approved by the Board of Trustees at our January meeting. With this program, families can buy future years of SJCS tuition at current year prices. Purchases must be made by April 15 to qualify for current year pricing.

January Board Summary At the January Board of Trustees meeting on 1/27, the group heard about the wonderful turnout and results of the Open House on 1/25. Interest and applications from the event have been outstanding. On the financial side, the board heard the report about the cuts to personnel expenses that were made in December. Further, the annual financial drive is about 55% of the way to its budgeted goal and about 43% of the way

to its stretch goal. Things are improving as the year goes on. All of the trustees realize the difficult position that salary cuts create for our employees, and they do not see this as a long term solution. The trustees discussed their evaluations of the board as a whole and of themselves as individual trustees. Targeted development opportunities will help address areas that need improvement. The group also set up the nomination committee in charge of finding new trustees to replace the ones with terms ending in June. Lastly, the board received news from Mr. Meester that he has accepted a job at Holland Christian Schools in Holland, MI for next school year. The group outlined the search process for a new superintendent and set the wheels in motion for that search to begin.

Welcome Owyang Family! Today, the Owyang family begins their time as part of the SJCS family. Julianna is in 3rd Grade with Mrs. DenOuden and comes from Heritage Christian Academy in Los Altos. Please go out of your way to make Charles, Genevieve, and Julianna feel welcome.

Please come by to claim your items and make sure to label them with the appropriate name. The cabinet is located in the back of the office by Mrs. Garside’s desk. We will also set the items out on tables in the main entryway later this week.

Pick Up Daycare Invoices Daycare invoices for the month of January are available in room 15 this week. Please stop by and pick yours up.

Open House Next Week Be sure to come to campus next week Wednesday night (2/12) from 6:30pm - 8:00pm. This event is a chance for our parents to see what their children are doing in class and get a preview of next year by visiting that room as well. Mark your calendars now!

Staff Escapes Students! Friday afternoon, members of the faculty took on the boys basketball team in a game for winner-take-all bragging rights. Scores of parents and students came out to cheer on their favorite side, and after a back and forth battle, the faculty emerged victorious by a score of 51-49! Congratulations to our boys for a great season, and thanks to Coach Fung for working with these young men and making them into better players and better Christians. Go Tigers!

Teacher Tales Check this section each week for exciting stories of teachers doing great things in the classrooms of San Jose Christian School. In Social Studies, the third graders have been learning about how people in a community work together to make products and provide services. As a culminating assessment of this unit, Mrs. DenOuden asks students to choose a product or service to market to the community. Students create a business plan with a target audience in mind before creating a print advertisement. Since the introduction of the iPad lab on campus three years ago, Mrs. DenOuden has been using iMovie to help students create 60-second commercials to advertise their product or service. Prior to this project, students learn the basics of iMovie during their technology time in the classroom. When it's time to do their commercials, students are asked to put all their skills together to make a commercial that meets the classroom expectations. On Friday, Mrs. DenOuden has invited parents to view these commercials in a student showcase. If you'd like to see more of these commercials, check the Facebook page on Friday afternoon for a link to the videos on YouTube. Projects like this demonstrate the SJCS commitment to helping our students make sense of the world around them. As we all saw during the Super Bowl yesterday, advertising is a multi-billion dollar endeavor that intends to influence our life choices. In the commercial project, our third graders learn the principles of advertisement and how to identify and discern the techniques advertisers use to influence culture. Arming our students with these skills allows them to make wise choices that glorify the Lord and embrace their roles as agents of renewal in this world.
