IT’S VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION WEEK AT SJCS San Jose Christian School is known for it’s “Irresistible Christian Community” and the people who make up that community are YOU! We want to take this week to thank each parent, grandparent, family member, and friend who supports our school. You are an amazing group who represent what we read in 1 Corinthians 12: There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work. Thank you from the entire staff!

Tiger Stripes Reflections on Who We Are by: Bart Den Boer Love…Learn…Serve: Making It Come Alive This is the final article on how to use our SJCS tag line Love…Learn…Serve to tell our story. A LOVE for God • School, home, and church partner together at SJCS to encourage and train students to love the Lord in all aspects of their lives: heart, soul, strength, and mind. Our Story: We are a community here, a community of partners committed to blessing each other on this journey of parenting, learning, and Kingdom citizenship. This is one of four distinguishing characteristics of SJCS. We do this important work together! A desire to LEARN • SJCS provides exceptional academics to help students learn to their full potential. Students use discernment and Biblical perspective to examine Truth in all subjects and develop a lifelong love of learning. Our Story-exceptional academics: Our exceptional academics result in outstanding scores on the Terra Nova achievement tests each spring, with SJCS students averaging 2 to 5 grade levels above their peers in other private schools Our Story-discernment and Biblical perspective: We combine excellent academics with sound biblical perspective in all subject areas. We do not teach students what to think; we teach students how to think and engage biblically. A Commitment to SERVE • Our students use their learning and talents for a purpose: to engage and transform the world for Jesus Christ. SJCS strives to advance the kingdom of God through service. The Story-engaging and transforming through service. We teach to engage, not withdraw from the world. We encourage our students to make a difference right now, transforming this world into one more like God intended it to be every day. So there you have it. Now you too can tell our story, and explain our mission around three easy-to-remember words. Love…Learn…Serve.

Teacher Tales

from 7th Grade Bible

Check this section each week for exciting stories about teachers doing great things in the classrooms of San Jose Christian School. A Psalm of Assurance for Today In David’s day, shepherds were a common sight. Not so for us today. Given that most of us are unfamiliar with the role and duties of a shepherd, how would a contemporary poet-king word his “Psalm 23”? This was the task given to the 7th graders recently in Bible class. As part of a unit on the Wisdom and Poetry Section of the Old Testament, the students took a closer look at the Book of Psalms. Having already studied the book of Job, students were able to identify Hebrew poetic devices in the psalms --- such as parallelism (where the poet uses two consecutive phrases to say the same thing) and metaphors. The 7th graders proceeded to identify and differentiate between various types of psalms. These include laments, historical psalms, liturgical psalms, Messianic psalms, and psalms of trust. In the course of their study of the collection of psalms, the students memorized several psalms, including Psalm 23, which in turn served as an example of a trust psalm. In order for the class to experience writing their own psalms, they were instructed to write a modern-day psalm capturing the essence of the original Psalm 23 written by David. For their psalms of trust, students chose themes and metaphors ranging from “The Lord is my Life Guard”, to “The Lord is my General”, “The Lord is like my father”, and “The Lord is my Coach”. Yet others used the metaphor of a compass or a teacher. The printed psalms have been displayed in the class where they have blessed and encouraged many readers. Below are highlights from two of our 7th graders. Psalm 23 For Today, by Whitney The Lord is my compass; in Him I am complete. He guides me to places of comfort, He takes me to peaceful places, He renews my mind. He leads me on the right tracks for His purposes. During times of trouble and hardships, I won’t be afraid because You are my constant companion; Your guidance calms me. You are a refuge in times of trials. You provide for me and will meet all of my needs. You will take care of me and love me always, And You will be with me for eternity. My Teacher By Carmelina The Lord is my teacher, I shall need no more. He teaches me the things that I need to know. He doesn’t give me stuff that I can’t handle; He puts me through tests to help me. He helps me make good decisions. He helps me get better and better each day. Even though I get stuff wrong He will always correct me, if I go on the wrong way He will get me back on track.
