Tiger Stripes Reflections on Who We Are by: Bart Den Boer Reflections on Who We Are: Redeeming Athletics
Last week was theater week here at SJCS. In this space I addressed the challenge of believers working to redeem theater into a Kingdom-building enterprise. Today I want to address athletics. Full disclosure, I love sports. I have participated and coached at both the middle and high school levels and have been a fan at all levels of competition. My critique is also of my participation as a player, coach and fan. Redeeming athletics would include the following from players, coaches and spectators: 1. Encouraging excellent participation by cheering for ALL competing players, regardless of team. 2. Thanking and encouraging referees and umpires, even cheering when they make a tough call. 3. Celebrating the accomplishments and performance of ALL competitors, being helpful and supportive of ALL the players regardless of the team or the final score. 4. Welcoming and supporting all spectators, regardless of team. 5. Blessing God together when a contest demonstrates Christian character and acceptance. In my opinion Christians everywhere—including me--- have a long way to go in redeeming athletics. If we act like everyone else in any matter, how are we being the agents of transformation we are called to be? “On earth as it is in heaven.” How are we doing?
LOVE…Drives Safely in the Parking Lot! I would like to thank everyone for the comments and support in response to my “How Many Reckless Drivers?” e-mail. Here are some of the responses. I especially like the last one. •
If we can't tackle this issue successfully in our small SJCS community where all drivers are Christian parents of young children in the immediate area it is even more troubling ...
•
I agree safety is critical in that parking lot; Thanks for sending this out!
•
At this point we need stronger traffic enforcement. It seems that the teachers and staff are hesitant to address this when it is happening. Our children are far too precious to allow this to continue.
•
How about putting up a one way sign for when you enter the lot, as a reminder to turn right ?
•
I can look into the cost of a sign posted at the orange tall cone entrance when entering the parking lot that states" SAFETY AT 7(mph). Something catchy but also reminder.
•
I’m not trying to "out" the individuals, but maybe there is a way to establish a profile of who is doing this so we can assuage the rush.
•
In the end, it will come to the choice of each driver to drive carefully or not.

Teacher Tales Spotlight on Miss Laverman! Check this section each week for exciting stories about teachers doing great things in the classrooms of San Jose Christian School. The Real Wizard Behind the Curtain --by Jackie DenOuden It was a pleasure to assist with the Middle School Drama production of The Wizard of Oz for many reasons, but the most meaningful to me was to witness Miss Laverman’s passion and skill as Director. From behind the scenes, I was able to observe Ashley’s clear direction for the play and see her ability to help students reach their full potential on the stage and in theatre. Many of the student actors had never seen the movie or read the book, so it was wonderful to watch Ashley pass on her love for the story and see the kids connect to the characters. As she wrote in the program, “the themes of love, friendship, and finding your place in the world still resonate.” It is rewarding to be a part of a community that values the performing arts, and it was a pleasure to help Ashley as she nurtured the God-given gifts within the students. Just like in many things in life, the experience is about more than the final performances, but also includes all the little lessons along the way. Thank you for a great show, Miss Laverman!
