Tiger Stripes Reflections on Who We Are by Mr. Den Boer Core Values

Core values can be defined as the fundamental beliefs of a person or organization. They are the guiding principles that dictate behavior and action. As part of SJCS’s current strategic planning, we are in the process of identifying our own set of core values. What exactly are our fundamental beliefs and guiding principles? Over the next few weeks I will offer some ideas stemming from meetings with Board, staff, and community members. I welcome your comments at bdenboer@sjchristian.org.

!

Core Value #1: Biblical Worldview: At SJCS we value seeing life through the lens of scriptural truth and living accordingly. We acknowledge the sovereignty of God over every aspect of creation. We address the fallenness of humanity and the broken-ness of creation by directly addressing their effects on life as God intended it to be. We do not avoid difficult issues; we teach biblical discernment.

!

Do you think the above actually is a guiding principle for SJCS? Any grouping of words can feel good to the ear; it is much more difficult to make them come alive in the rough and tumble routine of life. Ask us (SJCS staff, faculty, and administration) how this core value comes alive in our work and in our relationship with you and your children. Challenge us. Keep us accountable.

High School Info Night

Each year, we host a high school information night for our students and parents. The event is geared for 7th & 8th grade families, but 6th graders are welcome also. On Tuesday 10/14 at 6:30pm, Mrs. Phillips will present an overview of the admissions process for private high schools, and we will feature a panel of SJCS Parents who have walked the journey, as well as, recent graduates attending various private and public high schools. These students will give the families in attendance an inside look at life in these schools and answer questions from the audience.

Moms in Prayer The MIP will be meeting this Thursday, October 9 at 8:45am in Room 12. Please send your prayer praise and requests to sjcsmip@gmail.com

Tiger Tracks Tig er Cubs - Tips and Information about Preschool! Separation Anxiety Having trouble leaving your child with the babysitter or at school and want to prepare her? Here are some helpful hints from our Preschool Director to ease the process….

!

Develop a parting routine: You can read her a quick story, then hug her and tell her you love her, let her know when you’ll be back, then put her into her teacher’s care, and then say your standard parting phrase (“I love you, you love me, have a great day and I’ll pick you up at three!”). Stick to your routine every day and resist the urge to either extend it or cut it short. It will help your child to know exactly what to expect.

!

Leave her with a comfort object: If you can give her something of yours, such as a scarf, she may be able to comfort herself with it, although don’t be surprised if she throws it on the floor as you leave.

!

Help your child to understand what’s happening: Her language may be limited, but she still understands a great deal. It will help her to cope if you reassure her by explaining what will happen. Don’t stop with the separation; keep going and describe the fun she will have: “First I will read you a story. Then I will say ‘See you later, Alligator!’ Then I will leave to go to work, and I will wave goodbye and you and your teacher will wave goodbye to me, too. Then you and your teacher and friends will have a lot of fun playing. All the kids will have snack. You will play outside, and you will play with the play-doh, and then you will have lunch, and then I will be back right after lunch to pick you up. Mommy always comes back.”

Teacher Tales Check this section each week for exciting stories about teachers doing great things in the classrooms of San Jose Christian School. This week we want to spotlight Ms. Hossink’s website. Every week, Ms. Hossink adds a section to her homework page that talks about how the 2nd grade class is incorporating this year’s theme, Love Does. “In 2nd grade this week we fully take on our LOVE DOES theme in every subject. We love our math partners and continue to work on patience as we solve tricky problems together. This means in Language Arts we appreciate the language that God has given us and practice how to best help support and encourage each and every reader in our class. In Social studies this means we continue to learn about and live out what it means to live in community with one another and serve each other as Christ did while He was on earth. As 2nd graders we learned in Bible how we don't want to shy away and hide from others like the Essenes, but want to shine our lights bright to the world.”

!

Here’s a quote from a 2nd grade parent about Ms. Hossink’s site: “As a 2nd grade parent, I am thoroughly blessed by the way she has embraced the theme. She includes faith integration every week, with ideas for parents to use at home on the Love Does theme. She also has an ongoing Instagram of pictures to share in visual form how her class is loving well.”

!

Keep up the good work, Ms. Hossink!

Tiger Tracks October Box Tops Bring in your Box Tops during the month of October as part of a classroom competition. Trim the Box Top labels from the packaging of a wide range of household products, and SJCS will receive money from these companies. The winning class gets a party. Funds raised through Box Tops for Education are used for campus beautification.

WAT Results

The 2014 WAT raised over $40,000 for SJCS, money that will be used to offset the costs of the Elementary field trips, multi-day trips in grades 4-8; support the music, drama, and sports programs; provide equipment for playgrounds and classrooms; and more. Thank you to everyone who organized the event, volunteered to help, and attended. If you have friends or relatives who would still like to donate money, the online portal will stay open for another month. You can set up or access your student’s account at: http://sjcswat.dojiggy.com

Flag Football The Tigers faced the difficult task of playing three games in a row. The boys played hard and made big improvements over this past week’s games. The boys travel to Achiever on Wednesday at 3:30 to take on the Hawks. Come out and support the Tiger boys!

! !

Cross Country The Cross Country team was well represented at their meet last Tuesday at Harker. All members of the team gave great performances. Dylan took 5th place in his heat completing a 1.43 run in 9:03. Outstanding job by all the Tigers!

! !

Softball The SJCS softball team played 2 additional games last week and now sit at 3-1. The girls had a tough loss against Los Gatos (12-2) on Wednesday. Our Tigers could not get their bats on the ball. Heading to Baymonte on Thursday the girls focused on connecting with the ball and they had excellent results (6–3). Our defense once again did an amazing job and held the Lions to 3 runs. This Thursday we face Achiever Christian at home. Come out and cheer on the Tigers!
