7th Grade Spiritual Retreat

Tiger Stripes by Mr. Den Boer Reflections on Who We Are So What’s the Difference? Engaging & Transforming Culture

!

Webster says that differentiate means “to see or state the difference or differences between two or more things.” We believe that one of SJCS’s differentiators is how we actively engage with our world. Through service projects we enter our community and learn via real-world interaction with other cultures. Through teaching and discussions we address the different opinions, beliefs, and problems inherent in our diverse culture. For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed... in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God. Romans 8: 19,21 For example, think with me of the recent racial difficulties in Ferguson, Missouri. How might such a “culturally engaging” discussion happen at SJCS? Through the lens of scripture, we address the following:

little more like God intended it to be. We are engaging and transforming culture. Right here, right now. And... we are preparing our children to carry these habits of transformation into their adult lives.

Rosetta Stone is Back! We are happy to say that we will again be offering Rosetta Stone language software this year. Students from Kindergarten - 8th grade will have the chance to learn any of the Rosetta Stone languages available. The individual user accounts make a student’s Rosetta Stone learning accessible from a home computer or any mobile device with an internet connection. The varied access means students won’t have to choose between school activities and foreign language. In order to select a language for your child (even if it's the same language as last year), please respond to the survey that Mr. I sent out on Friday.

Email Addresses

1) What is “broken” in Ferguson? What is not the way God intended it to be?

SJCS has sent out several email communications to school families this year. If you have not received any, we may not have your correct email address on file. Please contact the school office to correct your address or add any additional email contacts to our list.

2) Are we “broken” in similar ways?

Picture Day - Correction

3) How can we learn from what is happening in Ferguson?

Correct your calendars! Picture Day will be Tuesday, September 16 at SJCS. We are sorry for any confusion.

4) What can we do to prevent and/or heal the same kind of brokenness here in San Jose? At SJCS?

Mom’s In Prayer

God has invited SJCS to be an agent of transformation. Our purpose is to make a difference; through education and experience to make this world a

Teacher Tales Check this section each week for exciting stories about teachers doing great things in the classrooms of San Jose Christian School. Mrs. Baham, in addition to her music/band/Bible teaching, also serves as the Faith Integration Mentor for our staff. This role includes praying with staff, encouraging and recommending ways to integrate faith organically into the curriculum, and observing teachers in order to share the great things that are happening in every classroom. Mrs. Baham has already had the opportunity to visit multiple classes, and here are just a few of the great classroom environments she observed:

!

When I observed Miss Laverman’s science class, I “heard”: • We practice encouragement. • We are a team. • We need each other. • We discover our gifts.

!

When I watched Mrs. Nibbelink lead her students in grammar, I "heard": • Take time to do your best. • Learn from our mistakes. • I am here to help. • Attitude matters.

!

When I read Miss Diephouse’s quote board, I “heard": • I love God and enjoy being in relationship with Him. • Learning /reading opens doors.

• Well-crafted writing holds power. • I want to answer your questions.

Tiger Cubs

- Preschool News & Information For the month of September, Preschool classes will be discussing the following topics and themes: • Apples • “All About Me” • Families • Outer Space • The Creation Story

!

Tip: Take a look at the weekly curriculum for each day. At home, discuss with your child various things that they have done. It is helpful to ask specific questions, such as “Can you tell me three things you learned today?” For younger students, it is always helpful to ask about any songs or stories that are being taught in class, for you to replicate at home.

! !

REMINDER: Preschool does participate in school pictures. Please note that school pictures will be taken on Tuesday, September 16th. Soccer Shots has begun! You can still sign up your child. The class will take place at school every Tuesday. Go to: soccershots.org/bayarea to sign up.
