Tiger Stripes Reflections on Who We Are by: Bart Den Boer Love…Learn…Serve: Making It Come Alive This is the second of five articles in which I encourage all of us to tell the SJCS story using the simple tag line of Love…Learn…Serve. A LOVE for God • School, home, and church partner together at SJCS to encourage and train students to love the Lord in all aspects of their lives: heart, soul, strength, and mind. The Story: We are a community here, a community of partners committed to blessing each other on this journey of parenting, learning, and Kingdom citizenship. This is one of four distinguishing characteristics of SJCS. We do this important work together!
2/5
A desire to LEARN • SJCS provides exceptional academics to help students reach their full potential. Students use discernment and Biblical perspective to examine Truth in all subjects and develop a lifelong love of learning.

A commitment to SERVE • Our students use their learning and talents for a purpose: to engage and transform the world for Jesus Christ. SJCS strives to advance the kingdom of God through service.

CPTA Meeting Summary The CPTA had its general meeting on Friday, Jan. 30th. Attendants were able to hear the positive recaps of recent events and give their feedback on school functions like Science Night, Dine Out Night, and the Staff Holiday Luncheon to name a few. The group also discussed great ways for parents to get involved in future events. The CPTA is looking for topics and helpers for the next Parent Education Night as well as a spring Dine Out night. Let Peter Lam (plam.mail@sbcglobal.net) know your ideas! Here are some exciting dates to put on your calendar: February 11th is our Current Family Open House. Students love attending this evening to showcase their class work. They also get a chance to see the following years classroom. Then, make plans to attend SJCS Spring Town Hall on March 9 where you can hear all about the exciting thing happening in your school community. Also, keep on the look out for details regarding a special volunteer appreciation week dedicated to all the people that help make these events happen. The next CPTA meeting is scheduled for April 17th. We hope to see you there!
Coffee Cart Plan to stop by the CPTA hosted Coffee Cart this Friday. Enjoy a few moments of fellowship and connection with other members of your community.

Parenting Children with Anxiety Here is a link to a helpful article from our Learning Center Director. Anxiety is very common in children, and everyone experiences anxiety to some degree. Author Renee Jain wrote the article 9 Things Every Parent with an Anxious Child Should Try, which has some helpful tips for navigating the difficult waters of anxiety. A summary of the article’s main points is below, but the whole text can be found at http://www.huffingtonpost.com/renee-jain/9-things-every-parent-with-an-anxious-child-shouldtry_b_5651006.html 1. Stop Reassuring Your Child What should you do instead of trying to rationalize the worry away? Try the FEEL method: • Freeze • Empathize • Evaluate • Let Go 2. Highlight Why Worrying Is Good Worry is a protection mechanism. Teach your kids that worry is perfectly normal; it can help protect us, and everyone experiences it from time to time. 3. Bring Your Child's Worry to Life As you probably know, ignoring anxiety doesn't help. But bringing worry to life and talking about it like a real person can. Create a worry character for your child. 4. Teach Your Child to Be a Thought Detective You may have heard that teaching your children to think more positively could calm their worries. But the best remedy for distorted thinking is not positive thinking; it's accurate thinking. Try a method we call the 3Cs: •Catch your thoughts •Collect evidence •Challenge your thoughts 5. Allow Them to Worry Allowing your children to worry openly, in limited doses, can be helpful. Create a daily ritual called "Worry Time" that lasts 10 to 15 minutes. 6. Help Them Go from What If to What Is One effective method of doing this is to practice mindfulness exercises. Mindfulness brings a child from what if to what is. 7. Avoid Avoiding Everything that Causes Anxiety Try a method we call laddering. Kids who are able to manage their worry break it down into manageable chunks. Laddering uses this chunking concept and gradual exposure to reach a goal. 8. Help Them Work Through a Checklist Why not create a checklist so they have a step-by-step method to calm down? 9. Practice Self-Compassion Research shows that anxiety is often the result of multiple factors. Please keep in mind, you did not cause your child's anxiety, but you can help them overcome it.
