SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES vs REAL SALT LAKE BUCK SHAW STADIUM, Santa Clara, Calif. March 15, 2013 (WEEK 2, MLS Game #14) 7:30 p.m. PT (CSN-CA; KTVA-ABC) Two teams coming off quality results meet when the San Jose Earthquakes make their 2014 league debut when they take on Real Salt Lake on Saturday evening at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Quakes started off their competitive campaign at midweek with a last-gasp draw against Toluca of Mexico in the CONCACAF Champions League. Real opened their new season in dramatic fashion with a 1-0 win last weekend at the LA Galaxy. REFEREE: Jorge Luna. The Quakes have won at Rio Tinto Stadium each of the last two seasons, including a 2-1 victory last Sept. 21. Coaches record: Mark Watson vs. RSL: P1 W1 L0 D0 … Jeff Cassar vs. SJ: first game SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES A year removed from winning the Supporters’ Shield as the league’s best team over the regular season, the San Jose Earthquakes are looking to return to the MLS Cup Playoffs this year. Mark Watson returns for his first full season as head coach, having taken over the club midway through last year and missing out on the postseason only on goals scored. TEAM NEWS The Earthquakes began the competitive portion of their 2014 campaign in dramatic, getting a goal from Alan Gordon five minutes deep into stoppage time to earn a 1-1 draw with Toluca of Mexico in the first leg of their CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal series on Tuesday evening at Buck Shaw Stadium. Here’s the Quakes team: Jon Busch, Brandon Barklage, Victor Bernardez, Jason Hernandez (JJ Koval 73), Jordan Stewart, Cordell Cato (Atiba Harris 86), Sam Cronin (Alan Gordon 73), Jean-Baptiste Pierazzi, Shea Salinas, Chris Wondolowski, Steven Lenhart. “We’re playing against a very good team tonight. They possessed the ball well, they have technical players, so we knew it was going to be a challenge,” said Quakes head coach Mark Watson. “We knew that we were going to have to take the opportunities that we created. It was just one of those nights. I felt bad for the guys because I thought we deserved more.” The Quakes extended their home undefeated streak to 20 games in all competitions. The second leg will be played March 19 at Estadio Nemesio Diaz in Toluca. “He had offseason surgery so he got started late and he’s still not fully match fit, but Alan’s the type of guy who can join the game at any moment and have an impact,” Watson said of Gordon. “He did just that tonight. He’s a strong player, holds the ball up well, he’s smart, and allows us to attack the final third. I thought he had a great impact on the game when he came on.” The Quakes wrapped up their preseason schedule with a 2-0 win against Sacramento Republic FC on March 5, behind two late goals by JJ Koval (86) and Billy Schuler (91+). Here’s the Quakes team: Jon Busch (David Bingham 81), Brandon Barklage (Brian Niel 71), Jason Hernandez (Joe Sofia 71), Clarence Goodson (Ty Harden 71), Jordan Stewart (Shaun Francis 71), Cordell Cato (Sam

Garza 71), Sam Cronin (Khari Stephenson 71), Jean-Baptiste Pierazzi (JJ Koval 71), Atiba Harris (Walter Martinez 71), Chris Wondolowski (Billy Schuler 71), Adam Jahn (Alan Gordon 71). The Quakes also competed in the Rose City Invitational in Portland, recording a pair of 1-0 victories and a draw, defeating the host Timbers and Jamaica’s Portmore United. “Our defensive stability has been really good,” Watson said. “The team’s carried it over from last year, in terms of just being tough to break down and really organized. There’s been some really good performances in that regard. But there’s still things we’re working on – a little bit of movement stuff and just trying to get the ball to good areas where we can attack the final third.” The Quakes had a very active winter, signing midfielders Jean-Baptiste Pierazzi and Yannick Djalo and German fullback Andreas Görlitz. “From a big-picture [standpoint], it’s a good piece,” Quakes GM John Doyle said of Djalo. “It’s a bigger piece than some of the [other] pieces, I’d say. We’re excited to bring in a player of his caliber, his ability on the field, his resume. And then you go to his age. I’m cognizant of [the risks of] bringing in older players that are past it. The two this year, [28-year-old French midfielder Jean-Baptiste] Pierazzi and Yannick, they’re definitely not past their prime. They’re right in their prime. That’s exciting.”

RSL are one of five teams tied atop the Western Conference with 3 points from 1 match. LAST MATCH The game's lone goal came in the 80th minute. Kyle Beckerman found Joao Plata all alone at the penalty spot with a through ball, and he finished easily past Galaxy goalkeeper Jaime Penedo. Real goalkeeper Nick Rimando then saved the victory in stoppage time. After a Galaxy striker Rob Friend went down over Tony Beltran while leaping for a cross, referee Javier Santos pointed to the spot. But Rimando dived to deny Robbie Keane's spot kick to preserve the full three points. RSL head coach Jeff Cassar did not have a single newcomer to the club in his first team after taking charge of the club in the offseason. REAL SALT LAKE (4-3-1-2): Nick Rimando - Tony Beltran, Aaron Maund, Nat Borchers, Chris Wingert - Luis Gil (Luke Mulholland 66), Kyle Beckerman, Ned Grabavoy - Javier Morales (Cole Grossman 78) - Joao Plata (Jordan Allen 89), Alvaro Saborio. TEAM NEWS Real Salt Lake opened their season with a victory for a fifth consecutive year – and for the second time in three seasons with a win at the LA Galaxy. Jeff Cassar earned his first career victory as an MLS head coach, the first Real Salt Lake coach to win on his debut (Jason Kreis and John Ellinger both tied in their debuts). Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando against provided penalty-kick heroics to seal the win, stopping Robbie Keane’s spot kick in stoppage time. Of 61 penalty kicks Rimando has faced all-time in league play, 20 have been saved or missed – by the far the most of any goalkeeper in MLS history. “He was controlling the ball, didn't give up rebounds, was unbelievable in the air. This is not an easy team to play against when they are getting service into the box and then obviously the penalty kick save was amazing, but that is Nick, he is that guy,” said Cassar. “Every goalkeeper has their way of saving PKs, and I guess I have mine too,” Rimando said. Added Kyle Beckerman: “If you watch him, he doesn't budge. Keane's all about waiting for the goalie to kind of move a little and then he goes the other way. And Nick didn't budge.” With Chris Schuler out following offseason foot surgery, Aaron Maund started in central defense. Schuler could be in contention to regain his place for the San Jose match.
MLS GAME INFORMATION
“Everyone's moving forward on their injuries … [Schuler] “is probably further along than all of them,” Cassar said. “He's now challenging for traveling and a starting spot. I can't imagine he's going to start against San Jose, but you never know.” Joao Plata opened his 2014 account with the lone goal of the match. He has now scored in back-to-back league matches, having netted in the season-ending win against Chivas USA last year. “He was really threatening a lot of the time, but he was even controlling the ball and making good decision in transition, he was fantastic,” said Cassar. Added Javier Morales: "He is young and learning a lot, from the last year I see a lot of difference, he has improved on a lot of things. Now I am happy for him because I think he deserved the goal, he works hard out there."

In addition to three points, the Earthquakes celebrated their 200th win since joining MLS in 1996. Their first came on April 6, 1996 at Spartan Stadium, a 1-0 result against D.C. United in the league’s inaugural game. The match saw a flurry of goals midway through the first half with Steven Lenhart opening the salvo in the 18th minute. Rafael Baca sprayed a pass from midfield to Cordell Cato on the wing. The Trinidadian took a touch and sent a perfectly-placed cross toward the near post where Lenhart dove for a glancing header past Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando. The hosts didn’t wait long to respond as Kyle Beckerman and Javier Morales linked up on a corner kick one minute later. Beckerman looped a pass toward the far post where an unmarked Morales tapped home the tying goal. Lenhart capped the scoring moments later with a powerful header from close range. Shea Salinas took a free kick from 35 yards out that pinpointed the target man mid-stride, sealing San Jose’s second road win of the season. The Quakes surrendered a 1-0 advantage and dropped a 2-1 decision at the LA Galaxy on July 4, 2004, losing for just the first time since July 27, 2002, when striking first. The Quakes are also impressive in the playoffs when scoring first, posting an 8-0-1 record all-time. Halftime Success Since the beginning of the 2000 season, the Quakes are 98-3-19 when leading at the half, including a mark of 6-0-3 in 2013. Despite holding a 1-0 halftime lead on May 10, 2008, vs. Columbus, the Quakes were edged by the final score of 3-2. That game marked the team’s first loss since 1999 when holding a halftime advantage. RSL INJURY REPORT
OUT: FW Robbie Findley (R knee) FW Devon Sandoval (R foot) DOUBTFUL: DF Chris Schuler (R ankle) MF Sebastian Velasquez (L hamstring) MF Javier Morales (back)
CASSAR ERA KICKS OFF WITH 3 POINTS:
A week ago, RSL bench debutant Jeff Cassar became the first of the club’s three all-time coaches to earn a win in his debut, as both John Ellinger (April, 2005) and Jason Kreis (May, 2007) drew in their first-ever games ... RSL hired Cassar as its 3rd head coach in club history back on December 18, just 11 days after falling in MLS Cup 2013 via PK shootout, and just 8 days after Kreis announced he would accept the future NYCFC head coaching position ... Cassar joined RSL back in May, 2007 as one of Jason’s first hires, the duo teammates in Dallas during the early years of MLS ... The long-time assistant and former MLS goalkeeper worked closely with Kreis and GM Garth Lagerwey to institute the club’s “Team is the Star” ethos, with his ascension consistent with RSL’s “family” philosophy ...
NEW STAFF, LOADS OF MLS EXPERIENCE:
All four of RSL’s new assistants - Daryl Shore, RSL veteran Andy Williams, former Houston Dynamo FW Paul Dalglish and former LA/SJ/HOU DF Craig Waibel - played professionally, with Shore and Dalglish both minor-league head coaches a year ago ... Combined, RSL’s coaching staff has won MLS Cup as either a player or coach a total of eight times (Waibel 4x, Dalglish 2x, Cassar/Williams 1x each) ...
OTHER DEBUTANTS FOR RSL:
RSL’s only other two offseason additions - MF Luke Mulholland and M/F Jordan Allen - also made their club debuts at LA ... Mulholland played the final 25 minutes and saw a goal controversially disallowed in the 75’, while Allen - RSL’s 6th homegrown signing - came on in the final few minutes and demonstrated poise on the ball ...

WALL OF THE WASATCH NICKY RIMANDO:
RSL GK Nick Rimando preserved the 3 points in last week’s 1-0 road win at Los Angeles by denying a Robbie Keane PK during stoppage time, the 12th denial in 38 spot attempts for RSL opponents (Rimando 11 for 36, Garlick 1 for 2) ... Rimando, who was named MLS Player of the Week for 2014 Week One, also made 8 other saves on the night, many of the spectacular variety ... Nicky extended his all-time MLS PK “denial” record to 20 career stops, holding opposing PK takers to just 41-for-61 against the former DC/MIA and current RSL netminder ... A year ago, Rimando also saved a stoppage-time PK on May 8 at NE against Saer Sene to preserve a road win, with that saved PK the 2nd in a span of 4 games for Rimando - he stopped Mejia in the first half of the April 20 1-0 win over Chivas ... Overall, RSL ‘keepers have allowed opponents to convert only 26-of-37 attempts, with GK Nick Rimando - Major League Soccer’s most successful PK stopper - making 10 of the 11 all-time RSL stonings ... Former RSL GK Scott Garlick denied one attempt in 2006 (of the 2 he faced that season) ...
CALIFORNIA SOUL FOR RSL ROAD TRIPS:
All-time, 16 of the club’s 32 reg. season road victories 50% of the overall total - have come in California, with 12 at what is now Stubhub Center (6 v LA, 6 v CHV) and 4 at San Jose ... RSL is 4-4-1 all-time in San Jose, winning the 2010, 2011 and 2013 season openers at Buck Shaw Stadium ... RSL also handed the ‘Quakes its last home loss, winning 2-0 on a pair of Saborio goals last March 3 ... In SoCal, RSL is now 12-16-3 all-time at The (former) Home Depot Center against LA and Chivas in all competitions, going 0-2-1 in postseason and 11-14-2 in MLS reg. season (6-7-1 at Chivas and 5-7-1 at Galaxy) ...

PLATITA WITH THE SILVER TOUCH:
Providing the game-winning goal last week in LA was diminutive FW Joao Plata, now in his 2nd season with RSL ... Plata - often a spark off the bench - started for Cassar alongside running mate Alvaro Saborio, the Ecuadoran’s 20th start in 30 all-time appearances for RSL ... All-time, Plata has 8 goals and 13 assists in MLS play, with 5g/8a for RSL and 3g/5a for Toronto (201112) ... The 22 year old FW also had 2g/2a for RSL in Open Cup play a year ago ...
LATE-GAME HEROICS MAKE RSL “BELIEVE”:
Plata’s late goal - just minutes after an apparent Luke Mulholland strike was waved off - gave RSL it’s 23rd all-time GWG after the 75’ ... All-time lists for equalizers and GWG: RSL

VETERAN CONTINUITY LEADS YOUNG CORE:
RSL’s 2014 roster is split into two factions as the club seeks to capture the elusive hardware from a year ago, as Cassar’s locker room boasts 11 players who have called RSL home for 5 or more years ... They are: Rimando (8 seasons), Beltran (7), Wingert (8), Beckerman (8), Borchers (7), Findley (6), Grabavoy (6), Morales (8), Gil (5), Schuler (5), Saborio (5) ... On the flipside, RSL also boasts a young group of 9 players who are aged 22 or younger, many of who will see extensive time in MLS, especially when Saborio, Beckerman and Rimando are tabbed for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil this Summer ... They are: Velasquez, Plata, Sandoval, Gil, Salcedo, Lalo, Allen, Garcia, Lopez ...
MAUND IS MAN IN THE MIDDLE:
The biggest surprise to Cassar’s opening day lineup was the inclusion of DF Aaron Maund into the centerback rotation alongside veteran Nat Borchers ... Maund, now in his 3rd MLS season (2nd with RSL), made his 5th alltime start for the Utah side in a spot most expected Carlos Salcedo to occupy until the April return for DF Chris Schuler ... However, Maund demonstrated calm and maturity to go along with his unique blend of size, speed, strength and aerial ability ...
RSL v SAN JOSE 2013 REWIND:
In the clubs’ 3rd and final meeting a year ago, RSL was unable to complete a 3-game/9-point sweep when a pair of Steven Lenhart goals - just 180 seconds apart - were sandwiched around a Javier Morales equalizer for RSL ... Lenhart first headed home a cross in the 18th minute before Morales equalized with ease off a Kyle Beckerman corner kick one minute later ... Lenhart, however, gave the Earthquakes the lead for good in the 21st, nodding home a free kick that stunned RSL and the crowd ... RSL opened 2013 at Buck Shaw Stadium a year ago with an Alvaro Saborio brace to win 2-0, Sabo’s first goal set up by Joao Plata off the bench and the insurance strike off a no-look pass from Captain Kyle Beckerman, which concluded a sequence of 12 passes by RSL ... RSL maestro Javier Morales tallied a goal and an assist back on June 1 against West rival San Jose, leading RSL to an impressive 3-0 halftime lead in perhaps the most dominant 45 minutes played by Jason Kreis’ team this season .... MF Ned Grabavoy and FW Robbie Findley also scored on plays set up by FW Joao Plata ... That 3-goal / 45’ stanza was RSL’s highest-scoring half since July 7, 2012, when Saborio tallied 3 at home in the 2nd half, and was the most explosive first half since Sept. 21, 2011 in a 3-goal performance at NY ... In 2009, RSL had 6-goal (4/25 v NE) and 4-goal (7/24 v DAL) 2nd halves at home ...
EL MAESTRO MORALES = QUAKES KILLER:
Morales has enjoyed great success in his MLS career against the Earthquakes, scoring 7 goals and adding 6 assists in 13 games ... On 4 occasions, those goals have served as game-winners, while 1 of the 6 assists clinched the victory ... Javier did not appear in the 2013 opener at San Jose ...

THREE STRIKES, RSL OUT v SAN JOSE (2012):
LONGEST ACTIVE POSTSEASON STREAK:
RSL owns an all-time 8-7-6 mark against SJ in MLS and Open Cup play, including an 8-5-4 record since 2008 and a 4-4-2 mark in the Bay Area ...
RAREFIED AIR OF SUSTAINED SUCCESS:
In MLS and U.S. Open Cup competition since San Jose returned to the league in 2008, RSL has earned at least a point in 12 of the 17 contests between the clubs, dropping only a 1-2 match at Buck Shaw in 2009 prior to all three matches in 2012 and the ‘13 finale ...
Overall, RSL had scored NINE unanswered goals in the MLS series prior to the 2012 onslaught ... San Jose was closest to snapping RSL’s MLS-record 29-game home unbeaten run for RSL, a stoppage-time Own Goal by SJ DF Chris Leitch back on July 3, 2009, that gave RSL a 1-1 draw ... Real Salt Lake and San Jose “clashed” on three occasions a year ago, the Earthquakes with two dominating wins at Buck Shaw Stadium on April 21 (3-1) and July 14 (5-0), both featuring the bulk of SJ goals scored after RSL red cards ... San Jose also won in mid-June by a 2-1 count at Rio Tinto Stadium, knocking RSL out of first place in the West on each of the first two occasions and rolling to a Supporters Shield advantage on the third ... In 2012 at Buck Shaw, RSL suffered the 2nd-worst loss in its 10-year history, the 0-5 dismantling seeing 4 of the 5 goals allowed after a 57’ Kyle Beckerman red card ...

RSL’s current streak of 6 consecutive MLS Cup Playoff berths is the longest active run of postseason competition, with only NE having a longer run of 8 consecutive years and NY 6 since 2000 ... Only the triumvirate of Western elite RSL, Seattle and Los Angeles have advanced to Playoffs each of the last five seasons ... The Sept. 29 win @ VAN put RSL at both the 15-win and 50-point plateaus for the FOURTH consecutive season, something no MLS club had accomplished in the postshootout era (LA Galaxy 2010-13 joined RSL with a lateseason win over Montreal) ... D.C. United’s 2005/06/07 teams, as well as Los Angeles Galaxy 2010/11/12 joined RSL 2010-12 as the only teams to have put together three straight 15-win / 50-point seasons ...
GUNNING FOR YET ANOTHER FINAL:
New RSL boss Jeff Cassar and crew look to emerge from this season by not only advancing to the club’s 9th Conference, League or continental title, but bringing home elusive hardware ... IMPROVING ON RECENT SUCCESS:
A year ago, RSL ended up one bounce of a ball away from each of the championships that compose the American treble - Supporters Shield (3 pts off), Open Cup (lost final at home) and MLS Cup (lost PK shootout on road) ... Last year’s club set new marks for goals scored (57), road goals (26) and tied the 2012 mark for road wins (6) and road points (22) ... In 2012, RSL set a new club record for wins in a season (with 17) and saw Jason Kreis’ team capture a franchisehigh 57 points, surpassing the 56 captured during the 2010 30-game season ... The team’s record points-pergame average of 1.87 set in 2010 was unassailable, while 2013 saw RSL establish a club mark for goals scored, 2nd only to NY in 2013 ... The 23-game scoring streak (including 19 straight in MLS play) nearly tripled the club’s previous record (8 games) for avoiding the shutout ...
In a home match v VAN on May 4, 2013, RSL took the early 2nd-half lead when GK Nick Rimando watched a Nigel Reo-Coker free kick sail over his goal and quickly restarted play with a pinpoint goal kick, finding FW Joao Plata wide right 60 yards upfield ... Plata took a few touches and sent a cross onto the head of MF Luis Gil for the U.S. U-20 star’s second tally of the season ... The game-winning assist was Rimando’s 4th of his career and the 7th all-time helper in his now 15 seasons ... However, May 4 v VAN marked only the second time the veteran combined a shutout - the 102nd of his career with a game-winning assist (8/8/09, 1-0 v SEA) ...

RIMANDO REWRITING RSL/MLS RECORD BOOKS:
RSL “homeboy” Rimando needs just 4 more shutouts this season to become Major League Soccer’s All-Time leader in the category, trailing Kevin Hartman (112 clean sheets) with his 109, of which 73 have now come in the RSL Claret-and-Cobalt ... Rimando – now in his 15th year as an MLS standout who has started in every career appearance in goal, and who won MLS Cup in 2004 with United and in 2009 with RSL – came into MLS with the Miami Fusion ... ON THE RIMANDO RECORD HORIZON:
Entering his 8th season with RSL, Rimando trails only the recently-retired Hartman in most league GK categories; Rimando needs 29 wins to overtake Hartman for the all-time lead, along with 244 saves, 70 games and 5,878 minutes … The shutout record should come this season, with wins and games possibly coming in 2015, and the saves/minutes marks likely in 2016 (barring injury or extended absence) … Current San Jose ‘keeper Jon Busch is the only active GK who can potentially threaten the Hartman/Rimando thresholds in each category in the next 5 years or so … Rimando is 4th all-time in regular season games played with 347 ... Should pass Cunningham (365) for third, and get close to Ralston (378) for 2nd this season; Hartman all-time leader at 416 ... Rimando also 3rd all-time in games started with 347, could pass Ralston (372) this season (Hartman all-time leader with 411) ... Rimando 3rd all-time in minutes played with 31,383 and will likely pass Ralston (33,143) for 2nd this year (Hartman all-time leader with 37,260) ...
RSL GK Nick Rimando made his 200th career MLS regular-season appearance for the Claret/Cobalt Oct. 19 in Portland, becoming the first player in the club’s nine seasons to reach the bicentennial mark ... Rimando also has 15 CONCACAF, 19 playoff and 3 US Open Cup appearances for the team, which acquired him from New York just prior to the 2007 season ... Former RSL MF Andy Williams - the team’s Head Scout in 2012/13, now an assistant coach - was the previous appearance leader for RSL, with 189 games played from 2005-11 for the Utah club, while current Captain Kyle Beckerman, DF Nat Borchers and DF Chris Wingert each have 170+ reg. season games played for the club ... Rimando’s win a week ago at LA gave the perennial MLS GK of the Year candidate and everyone’s “homeboy” 86 RSL wins - the club only has 106 - and a total of 73 clean sheets for the Utah side ...
SABORIO BACK TO LEAD RSL:
RSL FW Alvaro Saborio - the team’s all-time leading scorer with 67 goals in 116 games across all comps for the Claret/Cobalt - scored game-winner in Costa Rica’s 2-1 win a week ago Wednesday against Paraguay, his 4th goal in 3 outings (incl. preseason action) over the prior 2 weeks ... Despite playing in just 16 MLS games last season, Saborio scored 12 goals for a league-leading strike rate of 0.75 per game ... Saborio also had 2 goals in 3 Open Cup games ... “Mr. Clutch” for RSL, Saborio has 17 gamewinners and 12 multi-goal games among the 97 games that have seen his 52 goals, the highest scoring rate in league history for players with 75 or more career MLS games …
TOUGH SLATE TO KICK OFF 2014:
2014 sets up with a difficult schedule for RSL from the outset, with 4 of its first 6 games and 6 of first 10 on the road … Early home games include perennial power Los Angeles, the new-look, star-studded Toronto FC and West rival Portland … Once the first 1/3 of the season is complete, RSL will lose 3 or 4 starters to World Cup play, and have to use its depth – potentially the best in MLS – to navigate mid-May to late July, including (hopefully) multiple Open Cup dates, before have a completely healthy, rested and ready team for the stretch run starting July 30 …

CAPTAIN BECKERMAN 20th TO 300:
“KB5” is the seventh player in MLS history with RSL ties to hit 300+ appearances, joining the following as former/ current Claret-and-Cobalt players in the exclusive club (active members of the club in red): FW Jeff Cunningham (365) GK Nick Rimando (347) - RSL GK MF Chris Klein (333) MF Andy Williams (332) - RSL Assistant Coach MF Kyle Beckerman (326) - RSL Captain MF Carey Talley (315) FW Jason Kreis (305) Beckerman will crack the league’s all-time top-10 in games played this year, likely reaching 5th this year, passing Andy Williams (332), Chris Klein (333), Pablo Mastroeni (334), Tyrone Marshall (337), Jaime Moreno (340) and Joe Cannon (342) ... Beckerman is now tied for 8th all-time in games started with 297 (Tyrone Marshall), get to Jay Heaps (299) at 7th in home opener, catch Chris Henderson (304) in 6th and close friend Pablo Mastroeni (316) at 5th later this year ...
RSL (USUALLY) CELEBRATES IF SABO SCORES: RSL’s all-time leading scorer, Costa Rican int’l FW Alvaro Saborio, usually leads RSL to victory when finding the back of the net ... Despite the heartbreak of MLS Cup 2013, RSL still owns a dominating 36-6-10 all-time record in all comps when Sabo scores ... Entering his 5th year, Saborio joins Kreis (2005 Open Cup) and Robbie Findley (2009 MLS) as the lone “hat trick heroes” in RSL’s nineyear, 340-game history across all competitions ... In all comps, Sabo now owns a team-record 68 goals in 116 games, w/ 21 game-winning goals and 15 multi-goal matches (17 and 20 in 97 MLS games) ...
Prior to last year’s Aug. 18 1-2 L v DAL, the two most recent losses when Sabo finds the back of the net were against LA, June 20 of last year and also in the 2011 West Final at LA ... The only loss prior to 9/24/11 at DC was the rain-soaked 4-5 loss at Cruz Azul in Aug. 2011 ... RSL is only 20-28-18 when Sabo plays and does not score, but 17-8-6 when he is unavailable due to suspension, injury or national team duty since his arrival in 2010 …
TICO SABO NO LONGER PERFECT ON PKS ...
Last April 6 @COL, RSL’s all-time leading scorer & Costa Rican international Alvaro Saborio saw his 8’ PK attempt saved by Rapids GK Clint Irwin, snapping Sabo’s 12-for-12 streak of perfection from the spot ... In an RSL uniform, Sabo is now 11-for-12 in MLS games after beating Dynamo GK Tally Hall on Saturday, with a 4-for-4 mark in CONCACAF Champions League ... RSL’s last PK miss was 12 attempts earlier than that April 6 miss @COL, as FW Robbie Findley saw his spot kick on Sept. 9, 2010, saved @SEA by GK Kasey Keller in an eventual 0-0 draw ... All-time, RSL is now 33-for-38 from the 12-yd spot ... In addition to Saborio (2013) and Findley (2010), other RSL players to fail to convert are Javier Morales (2008), Alecko Eskandarian (2007) and Andy Williams (2006) ...

TAKING THE SHOW ON THE ROAD:
Last week’s RSL win at LA extended the club’s fine recent road form, earning points in 6 of its last 8 across all competitions away from home, dating back to midAugust of last year ... RSL (+3) and its 2013 MLS Cup Playoff opponents Portland (+5) and Kansas City (+3) were the only trio of teams to own a positive goal differential away from home last year, with an MLS-high 26 road goals (just under 50% of the season total) scored by RSL ... 22 of RSL’s 56 points last year were earned from a club-record-tying 6-7-4 road mark, with 2012 and 2013 each setting a new club record for road points for the historically road-weary side ...
MORE ROAD PERSPECTIVE:
Last week’s 1-0 win at LA improved RSL’s all-time MLS reg. season road mark to 32-77-35 (.344; 146 GF / 226 GA) through 143 all-time road contests in League play …
Back on Sept. 21, 2011 in a 3-1 win at Red Bull Arena in New York, RSL briefly got its goal +/- head above water, but a late Joel Lindpere goal dropped the side to even, three days before a 1-4 road loss at D.C. United ...
RSL was only 4-24-5 away prior to Jason Kreis taking over in May, 2007; since that time, RSL’s MLS road mark is slowly rising at 28-53-30, meaning that RSL earns a road point more than 50% of the time since that change ...
When Jason Kreis took over RSL four games into the club’s third season in 2007, the differential was minus-43, eventually dropping as low as minus-57 after a loss at Dallas in May, 2008 ... It took 160 regular-season matches, but RSL finally made up the difference ...
In the first 3 seasons with Jason at the helm, RSL was only 6-26-11 on the road ... Since RSL won MLS Cup 2009, the club has posted a 22-26-19 mark on the road; only LA (26 wins), KC and SEA (24 each) have been more successful ...
Last week’s 1-0 win at LA allowed RSL to match its alltime +17 high-water mark originally set last Aug. 30, in a 4-2 win v PDX in all-time game #280 ...
HISTORIC ROAD WINS A YEAR AGO:
THE MYTHICAL “FIRST-CHOICE XI”:
While Kreis started the same XI in back-to-back games to open 2013, it hadn’t happened in 13 consecutive games until home games against SJ & LA in early June, the team’s last such occurance (incl. playoffs) ... RSL rolled out the same XI just 4 times out of 46 games across all competitions last season ... How rare are back-to-back lineup duplicates for RSL? It happened only once in 45 games in 2011 (Aug 6/13) and just twice in 41 games in 2010 (June 25/July 2; July 31/Aug 7) ... Due to injuries, cards, suspensions and national-team duty a year ago, RSL boss Jason Kreis fielded his “firstchoice” starting XI for only 59 minutes last season back on May 5, a 2-1 home win over New England, a victory marred by the Will Johnson red card in the 59’ ... That occasion - the first of the year and only time in 34 MLS games in 2012, besides the July 31 CCL match at Herediano - came on nearly the one-year anniversary of the last regular-season occurance, May 7, 2011, when RSL saw Javier Morales chopped down from behind and lost until late Sept. with a horrifically broken ankle ...
On July 13 of last year, Kreis’ team weathered the early storm at Dallas to record a 3-0 road win, breaking its “Texas Hex” to win on Lone Star soil for the first time ever in 23 attempts, courtesy of a Javier Morales game-winning goal, heroics from Josh Saunders and Jeff Attinella in the net and insurance strikes from Ned Grabavoy & Olmes Garcia ... RSL ended last year with wins in 5 of its last 10 away from home (at TOR, at CHV, at NE, at DAL and at VAN, with only stoppage-time stunners at MTL and at NY shocking RSL), also snapping its Canadian “donut” during the stretch, winning on June 29 in Toronto ... RSL has still never won in Washington, D.C. (9 MLS or Open Cup attempts), Philadelphia (3 draws) or Houston (0-8-1 all-time) ... RSL visits Philadelphia April 12 and Houston on May 11 this year, with attempts to rectify those 0-win marks ... The team mark of 6 road wins in each of the last two years is one better than in 2011, exceeding the four achieved in 2010, more than doubling the two earned in each of the 2007-09 seasons …
