ANTON J. BILCHIK, MD, PHD, FACS “THE DUKE SPECIAL SERVICE AWARD

This award is presented annually to an individual who, through their special service, has made extraordinary and lasting contributions in the fight against cancer or has demonstrated their humanitarian spirit within the community.

“I can resect a tumor, but I can’t excise the malignancy that causes bigotry or prejudice.” A NTO N J. BI LCH I K, MD, PH D, FACS, is an internationally recognized surgical oncologist and scientist who has pioneered techniques to improve staging in colon cancer and minimally invasive approaches for liver and pancreatic cancer. Highly regarded as one of the premier figures in modern surgical oncology, he currently serves as professor of surgery and chief of medicine at the John Wayne Cancer Institute at Providence Saint John’s Health Center. Dr. Bilchik has been the recipient of numerous awards and accolades, and has been honored by both the American Cancer Society and the American College of Surgeons. For ten years in a row, he has been listed as one of “Americas Top Surgeons” and has ranked in the top 1% of physicians in this country by the U.S. News and World Report’s Top Doctors directory. Quite notably, since 2001, Dr. Bilchik has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health for his research in colon cancer—research that has contributed to changes in national quality standards. Dr. Bilchik earned his medical degree from the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, and a doctoral degree in gastrointestinal physiology from Yale University. Among his many professional activities, Dr. Bilchik serves as an investigator on international multi-center clinical trials with more than 200 peer-review publications to his credit. He is presently on the board of directors of the Southern California Chapter of the American College of Surgeons. He is also the co-founder

DR. ANTO N BILCHIK

of the California Oncology Research Institute, a nonprofit organization that develops outreach programs for under-served communities, sharing vital information on cancer prevention and available treatment options.

DR. ANTON BILCHIK WITH NORMA, DAUGHTER ROMY AND SON DEAN

At the heart of his efforts is his wonderful family. He is devoted to his wife, Norma, and their children, Dean and Romy. Together they share a deep commitment to making a difference in our global community. Dr. Bilchik leads by example, and is a role model of excellence in his advocacy for social justice and equality. In his acceptance speech on receiving the 2012 Humanitarian Award at the Anti-Defamation League’s annual dinner he said, “I can resect a tumor, but I can’t excise the malignancy that causes bigotry or prejudice.” The John Wayne Cancer Institute Auxiliary is privileged to present “The Duke” Special Service Award to Anton BIlchik.

THE MANDELA FAMILY

“TRUE GRIT” HUMANITARIAN AWARD This award is given to heroes who have demonstrated, through their body of work, uncompromising integrity and commitment to the values of our great country: freedom, equality and democracy.

“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” N EL SO N MANDELA

ZA Z I W E AN D ZAMASWAZI (SWATI), as representatives of the Mandela family, are the daughters of Zenani Mandela Dlamini and Prince Thumbumuzi Dlamini, a Prince of Swaziland. Both women were born in Africa, but spent much of their youth in exile in the United States while their grandfather was imprisoned. They returned to South Africa as teenagers upon their grandfather’s release from prison in 1991. Zaziwe, age 36, is married to an American businessman, who she met as a college student in the United States at Clark Atlanta University. They married in 2002 and have three young children. Zaziwe has worked both in the United States and in South Africa, with a passion for nation building and a transformational agenda. Swati, age 35, holds a degree from Midrand Graduate Institute in South Africa and also has one child. She has worked in public relations

across a wide range of industries. She currently works as the Communications Director for the 21 Icons Global project, an effort to document the living icons of the 21st century, including Nelson Mandela, through photography, film and written narrative. Zaziwe and Swati launched the “Long Walk to Freedom” clothing line (www.lwtfbrand.com), which pays tribute to their grandfather and his work to unite a nation. The brand shares the same name as their grandfather’s autobiography. The women are also involved with the Mandela Bangle library project which aims to build container libraries across South Africa as well as to directly influence the lives of those most affected by poverty, inequality and HIV AIDS. The John Wayne Cancer Institute Auxiliary is pleased to present the 2014 “True Grit” Humanitarian Award to The Mandela Family.

“THE DUKE” AWARD

“TRUE GRIT” AWARD

Affectionately called “The Duke,” this striking award is handcrafted, creating a truly unique work of art, signifying the man and the mission of the Institute that bears his name. This brilliant crystal work of art is sculpted in the shape of one of the timeless monuments that thrusts up from the red desert floor of Monument Valley, Arizona. The location was used for the first time as a background in the filming of the critically acclaimed, Academy Awardwinning 1939 motion picture, Stagecoach, which catapulted John Wayne to stardom. The familiar silhouette of the Wayne figure is hand-carved, in homage to the 1956 film, The Searchers. It is a true heroic symbol of hope and strength in the battle against cancer.

The John Wayne Cancer Institute Auxiliary established the “True Grit” Award to recognize individuals who embody the values that were characteristic of John Wayne. The award is given to heroes who have demonstrated, through their body of work, uncompromising integrity and commitment to the values of freedom, equality and democracy. The majestic eagle is cast in the tradition of old world masters, using the finest bronze and mounted on beautiful black granite. Inset in the base is a bronze replica of the Congressional Gold Medal given to John Wayne in 1980. The historic medal features a head and shoulder portrait of Wayne with the inscription: “John Wayne—American.”

REMEMBERING

A GIANT

IN SURGICAL ONCOLOGY DONALD L. MORTON, MD

SEPTEMBER 12, 1934–JANUARY 10, 2014

From the humblest of beginnings, Donald L. Morton, MD, became the pride of his family, an internationally recognized leader in the field of surgical oncology and a friend and mentor to many. Dr. Morton died at Saint John’s Health Center on January 10 at the age of 79. Dr. Morton co-founded the John Wayne Cancer Clinic at UCLA in 1981. The clinic moved to Saint John’s Health Center and became the Institute in 1991. Standing on the shoulders of their co-founder, the Institute grew in prominence to become one of the most reputable cancer research organizations in the world. The Board of the John Wayne Cancer Institute recently announced the naming of the Donald L. Morton, MD, Melanoma Research Program in his honor. Dr. Morton never lost sight of his roots, always stressing the importance of education and the value of having good friends and a

loving family. He was born during the Depression in Richwood, West Virginia, in a home with no electricity, running water or indoor plumbing. His father was a coal miner and built the family’s small house. Dr. Morton loved learning, and attended classes at Berea College in Kentucky before transferring to UC Berkeley when he earned his degree in 1955. He was awarded his medical degree from UC San Francisco in 1958. He completed a fellowship at the National Institutes of Health and then joined UCLA. He eventually became chief of general surgery and chief of the division of oncology. In the 1970s, Dr. Morton turned his attention to a vexing problem in cancer surgery. Cancer often becomes life-threatening when cells break away from the original tumor and spread to lymph nodes where they can easily travel to other organs and tissues. Forty years ago, doctors treating patients for certain types of cancer, such as breast cancer and melanoma, removed many

lymph nodes in order to try to stop the cancer’s spread. The removal of so many nodes caused severe side effects for patients and increased the cost of surgery and length of recovery time. But Dr. Morton suggested that removing and analyzing a single lymph node nearest the tumor was all that was needed to assess the risk of cancer metastasis. Studies proved him correct and Sentinel Node Biopsy became the standard procedure in oncology, sparing many patients from the complications of more extensive lymph node surgery while curbing healthcare costs. Findings from his research were recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine. In the late ‘70s, Dr. Morton treated the actor John Wayne, who was suffering from stomach cancer. As with all of his patients, Dr. Morton did his best to help Wayne, even administering an experimental treatment to his patient. Wayne died in 1979, but Dr. Morton and the Wayne family honored the late actor’s battle with the disease by establishing the John Wayne Cancer Institute.

“Beyond his towering seminal professional achievements, products of his extraordinary intellect, his unquenchable curiosity and his indomitable persistence, he was an incredible gentle, beneficent, noble man who helped all of us to be better than we could have been without him. His legacy will live on forever.” — Dan Coit, MD, chief of melanoma surgery, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, New York Over the last 32 years of his career, Dr. Morton continued to make noteworthy contributions to his field authoring nearly 1,000 scientific papers. He became interested in melanoma and created one of the first experimental vaccines to treat the disease. The

DONALD L. MORTON, MD, PERFORMS SURGERY WITH MARK B. FARIES, MD

approach to treating cancer by harnessing the body’s immune system—the foundation of cancer vaccines—has been adopted by research teams around the world to treat various forms of cancer. He was also ahead of his peers in anticipating the genetics era of cancer research. Early on, Dr. Morton began preserving biopsy specimens and, today, the Institute is home to one of the most important specimen repositories in the world with the support of the Adelson Medical Research Foundation. Dr. Morton’s other significant contribution to the field was his dedication to training surgical oncologists. In the Institute’s Surgical Oncology Fellowship Program, he trained more than 145 fellows. More than 80% of those fellows have become university professors, deans or department chairs. Recently, the Institute became one of the first eight programs in the country to be accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education established in complex general surgical oncology. Dr. Morton will be remembered for his contributions to improving the lives of people who suffer from cancer. But he was, foremost, a beloved husband, father and friend. The father of four children, he often reminded his colleagues that friendships and collaborations were the keys to success in all aspects of life.

ABOUT JOHN WAYNE CANCER INSTITUTE AT PROVIDENCE SAINT JOHN’S HEALTH CENTER

Since 1981, the John Wayne name has been committed by the Wayne Family to leading-edge cancer research and education in memory of their father who died of stomach cancer in 1979. The Institute, previously known as the John Wayne Cancer Clinic at UCLA, was formed by the Wayne Foundation and headed by his eldest son, Michael. Over the next decade, Michael Wayne served as Chairman of the Board—a position he held until his death in 2003. Patrick Wayne, Michael’s brother, has since served as Chairman of the Board and provides leadership toward the family’s goal of curing this dreaded disease. PA RTNER I N G W I T H SAI N T JOHN’S HE A LTH CEN T ER In 1991, John Wayne Cancer Clinic, under the direction of Dr. Donald L. Morton, launched a successful affiliation with Saint John’s Health Center and opened in Santa Monica under its new name, the John Wayne Cancer Institute. Combined with the exceptional quality of Saint John’s medical staff and hospital, a unique cancer institute was created, outstanding in the areas of translational research and the treatment of solid tumors, including surgical oncology, immunotherapy, chemotherapy and radiation.

RESEARCH AT THE INSTITUTE Today, the tradition of excellence continues as John Wayne Cancer Institute spearheads new research advances while training the next generation of surgical oncologists. The Institute conducts multidisciplinary, basic, and clinical translational research on many complex cancer problems, focusing on melanoma, breast, colorectal, neuro and gastrointestinal cancers. With renowned researchers and advanced technologies, John Wayne Cancer Institute has the unique ability to quickly and effectively react to, explore and investigate life-saving cancer treatments. Developed at the Institute, the Sentinel Node Biopsy is one such treatment. Now considered the worldwide standard of care for melanoma and breast cancer, the Sentinel Node Biopsy has revolutionized treatment options by offering a minimally invasive technique to determine the spread of tumor cells. The Institutes’ research findings, in partnership with the National Institutes of Health and National Cancer Institute, have validated the benefits of Sentinel Node Biopsy and have been published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF THE SURGICAL ONCOLOGY FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM Dear Friends, Of all the oncology research success and acclaim our friend and colleague, Donald L. Morton, MD, FACS, achieved, he was most proud of having created the Surgical Oncology Fellowship Program and the opportunity it gave him to mentor fellows and see them go on to mentor others in cancer research and treatment worldwide. I share Dr. Morton’s pride in our program and in our fellows. This year, because our Program is now ACGME-accredited, our 2014 graduates will be taking their Surgical Oncology Board Exams. This is the first time that opportunity has existed, and they will be among the first surgeons MARK B. FARIES, MD ever officially certified in the specialty. Although I miss Dr. Morton greatly, I’m heartened to see his legacy live on. While the training our fellows receive is rigorous, we don’t just train them to perform surgery. Once they graduate, they train the next generation of surgical oncologists at some of the leading medical and research institutions in the country, not only in surgery, but also in clinical and translational research. As a matter of fact, Junko Ozao-Choy, MD, who graduated last June, is now serving as assistant professor of surgery at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. Fellow graduate, Anna Leung, MD, a Harold McAlister Charitable Foundation Fellow, is now an assistant professor at Penn State. Danielle M. Hari, MD, a William Randolph Hearst Foundations Fellow, is the chief of surgical oncology at Harbor-UCLA. Many of the more than 145 graduates from our program are now chiefs of divisions, chairs and deans at prominent universities and medical centers such as Duke University, MD Anderson Cancer Center, Fox Chase Cancer Center, Mayo Clinic, City of Hope National Medical Center and Columbia University Medical Center, to name a few. I’m certain Dr. Morton is looking on with pride. Tonight, as we honor our distinguished guests with their awards, I’d like to take a moment to thank the John Wayne Cancer Institute’s Auxiliary for sponsoring Nefertiti A. Brown, MD, as a JWCI Auxiliary Breast Fellow. Thanks to the Auxiliary and supportive donors like you, who provide funding to support named fellowships, the Surgical Oncology Fellowship Program will remain a legacy for generations to come. We could not offer the high standard of education and training we do without your generous contributions. Sincerely,

Mark B. Faries, MD, FACS Professor of Surgery Director of Complex General Surgical Oncology Fellowship Director of Donald L. Morton, MD, Melanoma Research Program and Therapeutic Immunology

THE JOHN WAYNE CANCER INSTITUTE AUXILIARY was established in 1982 when a group of fourteen women attended a luncheon hosted by Sandy Cohen and Noreen Nelson. The two founding members could not have imagined the success that would evolve from their original vision. Today, the Auxiliary has a membership of 400 general members and an active board of 31 directors, some of whom are second generation. The Auxiliary has provided John Wayne Cancer Institute with more than $18 million to support research projects, laboratory equipment and clinical fellowships. Equally important has been the enthusiasm and dedication of the Auxiliary members toward the shared goal of finding a cure for cancer.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE JOHN WAYNE CANCER INSTITUTE AUXILIARY Dear Friends, Welcome to the 29th Annual Odyssey Ball, Hope Springs Eternal, benefiting the John Wayne Cancer Institute. During the past year, like the changing seasons, we have lost some of our strongest branches and planted some new trees in their place. Of course, I am talking about the loss of Dr. Donald L. Morton, our Director of the Surgical Oncology Fellowship Program, and the founder of the John Wayne Cancer Institute; and our new partnership with Providence Health & Services. The loss of Dr. Morton has been devastating, not only for all of us at JWCI. ANITA SWIFT The medical community and his patients around the world all miss our “gentle giant.” However, I am reassured that his light continues to burn bright in the hundreds of doctors and researchers that he has educated over the years. The change in sponsorship at Providence Saint John’s Health Center is very exciting. Providence Health & Services recognizes and supports the outstanding work of our doctors and scientists, and has assured us that your financial generosity will continue to fund the important work at JWCI. We are very excited about their future partnership and growth of the Institute! We are honored to have with us tonight the granddaughters of Nelson Mandela, HRH Princess Zaziwe Dlamini-Manaway and HRH Princess Zamaswazi Dlamini, who are accepting the “True Grit” Award on behalf of the the Mandela family. They are, of course, being honored for their struggle for freedom from apartheid and continued struggle for equality throughout society. There is a strong connection between our families, the Waynes and the Mandelas. We both have a mandate to continue the legacies of our fathers and grandfathers, one which we both feel strongly. Finally we honor our own Dr. Anton J. Bilchik with “The Duke” Award, our chief of medicine and chief of the gastrointestinal research program and an internationally recognized surgical oncologist. Anton is the co-founder and medical director for the California Oncology Research Institute (CORI)— a comprehensive research and clinical cancer center serving low-income communities. Most importantly, he is a loving father, husband, son, brother, friend and chief dog walker for Coco. Anton, you keep JWCI fresh and healthy, filled with new ideas and doctors. Enjoy this special night in your honor! Thank you Susan Veerman and Cynde Wilen, our Ball co-chairs and your committee for this wonderful evening. Thank you all for coming and supporting these wonderful doctors and scientists!

My dearest Anton: You make me proud every day. Your tireless work, unwavering dedication and generosity inspire all those around you, especially me! You have saved countless lives and you continue to fight for the cure. You are a wonderful husband, father and friend. Congratulations on receiving“The Duke Award. I am so honored to be a part of your selfless journey.

I love you! Norma xo

Congratulations, Daddy! I wish I could be with you on your special night, but since I’m in Nicaragua with my Spanish class doing service work (along with a little zip lining!), I am sending this note instead. Some of my favorite childhood memories were going with you to make hospital rounds after dinner and visiting your patients. I felt so proud of you, from as young as I can remember, watching you with your patients… and having such patience! The best part of the night was having you all to myself afterward on our Pinkberry rounds when we would both chat about our day. Over the years I’ve watched you work tirelessly on your research. Your passion and dedication amaze me. I could tell how much it meant to you because even on the weekends you never took a proper break. I don’t know how you do it; all the research you do while saving so many lives. You are a huge inspiration to me! I would have loved to see you receive the Duke award. I am so incredibility proud of you, Dr. Anton J. Bilchik MD, PHD, F.A.C.S (aka DAD).

I love you so much. Romy

TO OUR DEAR FRIEND ANTON BILCHIK, Congratulations on being the well-deserved recipient of this year’s “The Duke” Award. You are at the top of your profession as a caring surgeon and researcher. The Mandelas have called you a “son of South Africa” and the John Wayne Cancer Institute is fortunate that you are here. Like Nelson Mandela, you treat everyone with dignity and respect. You are a treasure.

Love,

I OFTEN WONDER at the dramatic series of events that brought my husband and me to this extraordinary doctor. Each step, each meeting that led us to him, just amazes me. I think about what would have happened if we hadn’t spoken to a friend about a particular ailment that led to another doctor that led to a recommendation and on and on. How in the world do I say thank you to Dr. Bilchik? I feel helpless in the face of this seemingly monumental task of actually thanking the man who saved my precious husband’s life. But here I am, given the opportunity to express this thank you in front of people who are here to honor a doctor who has touched our lives as no other. I can say thank you, but I cannot describe how compassionate and how understanding Dr. Bilchik was toward me all throughout the medical journey that the three of us took since the time he entered our lives. So with my open heart filled with admiration and tears of joy, I thank you, Dr. Bilchik. You will be in my heart and soul forever. SHELLEY BUTLER

I AM A WRITER by trade, choice and birth, yet finding words to describe what doctor Anton Bilchik has meant to me, to my amazing wife, and to our lives, is like finding the words to a whole new language that only exists in a person’s heart and spirit and cannot be duplicated, printed, nor copied onto any surface except the heart itself. I am also a person who admires many, but has few heroes. Four to be exact. Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela and the man I’m here to honor tonight… my hero, my friend…Dr. Anton Bilchik. EUGENE BUTLER
