From the Principal

The fall season brings with it feelings of comfort. A cozy fire, the warmth of family gatherings, the smell of the autumn leaves, and the anticipation of goods baking evoke a sense of peace and calm. As we bring our calendar year to a close and anticipate the joys and opportunities that 2023 offers, we should look back at 2022 and the many accomplishments we enjoyed with pride.

At SJND, I'm touched by seeing our students together as we return to a deeper sense of normalcy. Packed classrooms with enthusiastic students and faculty, exuberant student rallies, field and service trips – things that were largely absent for two years – are now back and the excitement and joy of being together is easily felt by all. For this, I am tremendously thankful.

I’m thankful, too, for those of you who supported our Dream Flight celebration in September at the beautiful Claremont Country Club in Oakland. All proceeds from that event go directly to student financial aid, making an SJND education more attainable for more students and families. Thanks to our SJND musicians who provided live performances that wowed those in attendance.

I'm also thankful that in June our Board of Trustees unanimously voted to support our new strategic plan, "Destination 2027: Soaring to New Heights." This plan will guide future decision-making, energize us, and set SJND up for continued transformational work.

Please join me in being thankful for those things in our lives that bring us joy and hope. There are many such instruments around us. Sometimes, all we need to do is pause, look around, and take them in.

Peace, love, and hope,

Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends,

Geoffrey Godfrey Dean of Students

Geoffrey Godfrey joined the SJND community as Dean of Students this school year. The Oakland native, affectionately referred to as Mr. G. by students, is a decorated Army veteran, having served in Iraq, Germany, and South Korea as well as several U.S. posts. He served as the lead medic of his ambu lance crew during the September 11 attack on the Pentagon and was a combat medic, squad leader, and primary trainer of U.S. infantrymen and Iraqi soldiers, teaching combat life saver skills. A sergeant and squad leader in Iraq, he earned the Combat Action Badge for valor during combat. He also served as primary trainer of his squad on combat tactics.

Geoffrey attended St. Elizabeth Elementary School and Berkeley High, and later earned his MBA from the University of Phoenix.

Before joining the SJND community, he was the Dean of Students at Cox Academy and at the Lighthouse Community Charter School in Oakland.

Q: What are your chief responsibilities as Dean of Students?

A:

My chief responsibilities in this role include supporting student behavior, upholding school expectations, monitoring student attendance, coaching teachers on classroom management, promoting a positive school culture and climate, building community, monitoring school safety, and fostering social and emotional learning.

Q: What might surprise people about your role?

A:

People would be surprised by how much fun the Dean of Students role is. There are many opportunities to build trusting relationships with students and families and support students in non-punitive ways.

Q:

A:

How do you try to connect with SJND students?

I connect with students by being present and approachable. I show that I care and will hold them to high expectations. I enjoy spending time with them, having conversations about their interests, and building relationships as a mentor and caring adult. I also get involved in their activities, playing sports, exercising, and having lunch together with groups of students.

Q: What student outcomes are you looking for in your role?

A:

I am looking for students to make responsible choices and see the bigger picture of how their choices impact others and the community. I use mistakes as teachable moments for students to take responsibility for their actions. One primary outcome is to support students' growth and become the best version of themselves by building self-esteem and having a positive internal working model.

Q: What is the best part of your job?

A:

The best part of my job is spending time with students and watching them grow as young adults. It is rewarding when students run to my office with pride to tell me about a recent achievement or boast about a great test score.

Destination 2027: Soaring to New Heights GOALS S

aint Joseph Notre Dame High School unveiled a new Strategic Plan that will provide a pathway to continued and expanded student success while improving operational efficiencies and optimized use of facilities.

Principal Julianne Guevara shared the plan with parents of current SJND students at an event on October 27. "This plan will chart the course for our continued and expanded success," Principal Guevara said at the parent event. "Our careful and thorough review of the best way to carry on the business of delivering Catholic education will be an invaluable resource for our SJND community."

To develop the plan, SJND partnered with Catholic School Management (CSM), a full-ser vice, comprehensive, consulting organization supporting the educational ministry of the Cath olic Church with research, direct consultative guidance, training programs, and publications. CSM met with approximately 135 SJND admin istrators, Board members, faculty, staff, parents, alumni, and students for individual and small group discussions as well as focus groups.

Group leaders have been chosen to lead teams that will address objectives and strategies that will lead to achievement of seven goals. "This is a collaborative approach to success," Principal Guevara said. "Each team has a specif ic timeline to achieve its goal and we will have many check-ins along the way to ensure that we are on the pathway to meeting all of our goals."

New Trustee Brings Team Spirit to SJND Board

Phoebe Grunt '13, a scientist at the Clorox Company, admits that she was surprised when she received the invitation to join the SJND Board of Trustees. "I am incredibly excited to be named to the Board of Trustees," says Grunt. "Frankly, I was surprised that I had been asked. When I continued to speak with the members who had already been part of the Board, I became more excited because it felt that they were very intentional with who they were going to bring on board next. The strategy was very forward-thinking and was not a spur-of-the-moment decision."

As a previous winner of the Spirit of the Pilot Award, Grunt has displayed an unquestionably passionate loyalty to SJND. Grunt became a member of the girls varsity volleyball team in her freshman year at SJND in 2009. After becoming one of the most decorated volleyball players in SJND history, Grunt was honored as a 2020 inductee to the SJND Athletic Hall of Fame.

"Having attended SJND in the more recent past, I've

seen what has worked and what hasn't worked, and I have a close connection to those who attended when I was there as well as with people who are still there today," remarks Grunt. "I am hoping to bring a fresh perspective based on my close connection to the programs currently offered by the school (and) having benefited directly from them like athletics, academics, and extracurricular activities.

"I am so grateful for the SJND community and what it has brought to my life," adds Grunt. "I owe most of who I am today to the way the SJND community brought me in and allowed me to be who I wanted to be. I want to be able to celebrate that as part of the community and bring that to other people as well."

And leave it to this SJND Athletic Hall of Famer to think of her role on the Board as similar to her leader ship role on the volleyball court. "I am honored to be part of the team," says Grunt. "I use the word 'team' a lot more than 'Board' because to me that resonates a little bit more."

Alumni Profile

Elijah Fisher '14 Brings World Premiere to SJND

In particular, playing basketball at SJND was a formative experience for Fisher. "I was on the junior varsity team until I got injured. I chipped my meniscus – a very unusual injury. It was wild, and it hurt," he says with a laugh. "I came back and played during my junior and senior year on the varsity team." In his senior year, Fisher was part of the boys basketball team that won the Division V State Championship.

"It was a very supportive community," remembers Fisher of his time at SJND. "It definitely helped me grow. Sometimes I wonder if I was doing too much because I was moving so fast, but I think when you're young you can do that."

feel like I was involved in almost everything," recalls Elijah Jalil Paz Fisher '14 about his experience at SJND. Today, Fisher is flying high after receiving his MFA in acting in 2021 from the University of Montana following his graduation from the University of Portland. He returned to SJND in October for the world premiere of his play Five Little Birds

Fisher filled his years at SJND with as many clubs, sports, and student events as his schedule could handle. "I was encour aged by my parents to do everything and anything that I was interested in," he continues. "Early on, I played baseball and basketball, and I was on Link Crew and the Campus Life team. I was also heavily involved in Spirit Week. I had a lot of spirit when I was there!"

Despite being so involved with SJND extracurriculars, Fisher did not develop an interest in theater until his senior year. He was absorbed by all the creative possibilities it offered. "Theater is a community, and if you're entering it, you're usually entering as an actor," he notes. "But there are so many lanes in theater that you then can find your lane."

Based on his study of science at SJND, Fisher initially entered the University of Portland as an electrical engineering major, though he soon changed paths to computer science. But Fisher eventually found his path when he changed his major to theater. "I think because theater was new to me, I felt that there was much more for me to learn," explains Fisher. "It was a whole world that I had no idea about."

Before graduating from the University of Portland, Fisher traveled to New York to attend the University Resident Theatre As sociation's annual recruiting event – known as the URTAs – for prospective MFA candi dates. However, he faced a setback when he was not recruited by any of the schools in attendance.

6 UPDATE | FALL 2022
"I

"I was upset and I didn't know how I was going to make it," Fisher remembers. Un daunted, Fisher attended another conference in Spokane where he auditioned for more schools and received an invitation from the University of Montana to apply. He found his experience in graduate school to be a tremendous opportunity to grow creatively.

Over the summer, Fisher returned to SJND to work with students on Five Little Birds, a play that he authored, wrote music for, and choreographed. The play focuses on a character who is dealing with depression and anxiety. "The way I view mental health is sim ilar to the way people view physical health," he explains. "People are born with different levels of physicality and you can work on that. However, it seems a lot of people today aren't given the tools, and there are a lot of tools that are detrimental to our mental health. It's a play that explores mental health and how people deal with it from an outside perspective."

Returning to his alma mater for the world premiere of a play that he wrote is more than just a full-circle moment for Fisher. "The students are great," he says. "They're very enthused about what we're doing. To even hear that they wanted to do my play was really exciting for me. It was also terrifying because this is a section of SJND that I did not spend much time in but I've since connected to. But I think the things that are terrifying and exciting to me are the things I gravitate towards because they transform me the most. Now I am interacting with these students from a very different perspective than when I was here."

"There have been so many twists and turns on this path," says Fisher as he reflects on the journey that has taken him back to SJND. "I'm very excited to be working with these students, and they seem to be excited to be working with me. Working on a new play is scary, of course, but more than anything, I'm grateful."

Raising the Bar for Students and Wellness

Final plans for SJND’s "Raising the Bar" renovation and expansion of its weight room in the Kelly Gymnasium have been approved by the Oakland Diocese, and more than $250,000 of the needed $375,000 construction budget has been raised.

The project will update and expand the antiquated 525 square-foot weight room by 30 percent. Floor-toceiling windows will replace two concrete walls to allow for natural light. The adjoining outside area will be repurposed and utilized for core and agility fitness

activities, and the gymnasium stage area will be home to cardio and floor exercises. The school plans to bring in new and modern equipment to inspire more physical activity to allow sports teams to train together. The new cohesive space will not only accommodate more students, but faculty and staff will also have access to the improved facility and equipment.

"We can’t wait to finally break ground and give these deserving students a prideful space that will enhance our school's curricular and co-curricular programs in support

of well-being and mental health,” said Director of Advancement Lucy Lopez.

The Raising the Bar project was initially launched in early 2021, but was paused due to the disruption of COVID. The vision of the space is becoming a reality and foundation work is scheduled to begin this winter with a targeted project completion, pending successful fundraising and supply chain challenges, in winter of 2023. Once completed, the remodeled and expanded fitness center will supplant the current weight room which is in a converted garage. The late Msgr. Alvin P. Wagner parked his car there. After his passing in 1989, a universal weight machine was installed, and it took up nearly all of the space. A 2008 fundraiser brought in some funds to modify the space, but it remains below today's standard.

The project

"Raising the Bar is raising our school," says Boys Varsity Basketball Coach Don Lippi, a member of the California Coaches Association Hall of Fame. "Lives are changed in that small room. Students learn how to improve their bodies, improve their diet, and improve their vision of themselves. Camaraderie is infectious if done right in that room, as each student needs a spotter who protects them from injury. Seeing improvement is the gift you get by working hard. I think we can come up with enough funds to turn this garage into a great workout room for athletes, dancers, our teachers, and our alumni." Dark

Helping Students Who Learn Differently Succeed

aryanne Stehr has helped hun dreds of students through their learning challenges with a strong combination of care, attention, support, and challenge," says SJND Director of Counseling John Gunty. "They have all successfully enrolled in colleges and universities. I have the privilege of reading the student response surveys each year and there is one word I see in Maryanne’s feedback more often than any other word: Love. 'We love Mrs. Stehr,' 'We love that she is so loving and caring to us,' again and again."

Mrs. Stehr, Learning Services Counselor, arrived at SJND in 2017 with over 20 years of experience working with students with learning differences in the Diocese of Oakland. In 1993, Mrs. Stehr established and developed the Mother Pia Special Needs Program at St. Elizabeth Elementary School in Oakland. The program was created to provide advocacy and intervention for students with special learning, behavioral, or emotional challenges, as

well as to provide support for their families and teachers.

"I was a young new teacher at St. Elizabeth and loving it, but I was seeing a lot of students who had different learning needs," remembers Mrs. Stehr. "They were either having to go to public school for services to meet their needs or families were refusing assessment because they didn't want their students to have to leave our school if they got a diagnosis. That was true across all elementary schools in the Diocese at that time."

With the assistance of Sister Kathleen Marie Raya, one of the Dominican Sisters at St. Elizabeth, Mrs. Stehr sought to create a program to help accommodate students who learned differently but whose families wanted to provide them with Catholic education.

Mrs. Stehr and Sister Kathleen proposed a pilot pro gram, which became the Mother Pia Special Needs Pro gram. Sister Rosemary Hennessy, who was superintendent of the school at the time, approved the pilot program. Mrs. Stehr also credits Sister Mary Virginia, who was then principal of St. Elizabeth, for allowing her to split each school day between teaching and developing the program.

M
Learning Service Counselor Maryanne Stehr has brought a passion for helping students who learn differently to SJND.
10 UPDATE | FALL 2022

Despite the immense challenge of creating a program for elementary students with learning differences – Mrs. Stehr recalls pushing a cart from room to room because the new program lacked a permanent space and her office was a former custodian closet – she was undeterred. "It was our priority to provide advocacy, case management, and support for students who learn differently, as well as support for their teachers and families," she explains. "We knew it was the right and just thing to do. Neurodiverse learners everywhere deserve equal access to education."

The initial pilot program assisted 10 students, and by the time Mrs. Stehr left St. Elizabeth the program was working with 120 students each year. It became a nationally recognized model program for children with special needs and is acclaimed by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, an educational accreditation body.

Mrs. Stehr served as the founder and director of the program from 1993 to 2000. She returned to the program as a teacher from 2008 until 2017, when she began working at SJND.

essful. That's not easy to do when you have many students to care for. I'm grateful for that partnership and the partnership of the administration here, and the support of Mr. Gunty and the counseling team."

Mrs. Stehr notes that she has seen an increase in social-emotional needs from students from the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. "We've noticed that the number of students who are presenting anxiety and depression has risen quite a bit. There are lots of students who are coming to us who don't necessarily have an official diagnosis of anxiety or depression but have had symptoms since the onset of the pandemic. They also seem to be a little less certain of their world and the future in terms of politics and climate change, as well as also being worried about what all teenagers are concerned about – fitting in, being needed, and feel ing part of a community or group. There is always that tension between thinking everybody else has that and you don't while trying to find your way in the world."

One thing that hasn't changed over her career in education is the way she feels about her students. "The thing I love most about being at SJND is first and foremost the students," she shares. "I think all of them, particularly the students on my roster, are some of the bravest people I know. They are waking up every morning knowing that they learn differently, and school will be that much more of a struggle for them. It's hard to remember how incredibly smart and capable you are when school is not designed to fit how you learn."

Adapting what she learned from developing the pro gram for elementary students to the high school population of SJND had its challenges. "I had never been involved with course scheduling and college requirements," points out Mrs. Stehr. She was also in a new place where she wasn't a familiar face to dozens of students. She adds with a laugh, "At St. Elizabeth, the students would treat me like a rock star. I remember feeling sad my first month here because high schoolers are much too cool for that. I got over that very quickly. But now that I've built up the rela tionships, it's very much the same. Being with the students is the best part."

It wasn't long before Mrs. Stehr felt at home at SJND. "SJND is like St. Elizabeth in that it has its own spirit," she says. "It sounds cliche, but it's true – when you walk on campus, there's a feeling here. It's a lovely community of students, and I love the diversity here. Our students are super earnest, and all of our students go on to have very successful college experiences."

She also gives significant credit to the SJND faculty for being so supportive of students with learning differences. "Since I was a teacher, I understand how incredibly difficult the job is. It can be one of the most exhausting, but won derful, jobs in the world. They are very patient with me and are also very accepting, accommodating, and caring about the students on my roster. Everyone goes out of their way to make sure the students are feeling welcome and succ-

Science for Everyone

Each February, SJND welcomes over 150 sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade students from over two dozen participating schools for the Diocese of Oakland Science Fair. The annual event, which was held in 2010 and allows students to exhibit their science, technology, engineer ing, and mathematics (STEM) skills by submitting proj ects, has continued for over a decade because of the gen erous contributions of Rick Fischer '61, a senior partner at Morrison & Foerster in Washington, D.C.

Fischer, a longtime supporter of SJND, saw supporting the Diocese of Oakland Science Fair as a unique opportu nity to make an impact on his alma mater and its future. "I had made some earlier contributions to the science rooms when they were being renovated," Fischer recalls. "When I heard about the Diocese's science fair, it fasci nated me. I have always been interested in science and math, even though I never pursued them professionally. The program is important to the school because it intro duces a lot of junior high students interested in math and science throughout the Diocese to SJND, and I wanted to see it continue."

Fischer originally committed to contributing to the fair's operations for five years, though he has continued to contribute beyond his initial commitment. "I am

continuing it because I think it's an absolutely wonderful thing to do for the individual students, the science pro gram at the school, and for the school's enrollment," says Fischer.

Though Fischer's career path took him into law, he has a strong belief in the importance of science educa tion. "Where I think we need to strengthen our country is in science achievement," explains Fischer. "We have a tremendous history there. I believe it is important for Alameda, the Diocese of Oakland, California, and the United States to have a greater focus on science education."

In fact, Fischer recalls a science teacher at St. Joseph’s that was extremely influential on his interest in the subject. "There was a teacher at St. Joseph's, Mr. John Donovan, who I had for chemistry and a few other classes," he recalls. "He thrilled me with science. He was fabulous. Mr. Donovan was invariably calm, cool, and collected, even when one of the students started a fire in our chemistry class. Thankfully, it was put under control very, very quickly. He was somebody who could turn a young person onto science. I may not have pursued science as a profession, but I pursued it as a lifelong interest."

Decades after his graduation, Fischer remains deeply appreciative of his alma mater and the friendships that he developed there. "I was raised in San Leandro and the school was my introduction to Alameda," he remembers. "There has always been a place in my heart for Alameda

because the students at the school were really special. I am still in contact with many of them, which is really something. We did our 50th 're-graduation' and I got a golden graduation certificate, which was very special. Virtually everyone who was still alive at that point was there. It was like not a single day had passed between our original graduation and this one.

"The science fair is an opportunity to bring together really talented young people who have an interest in science where they get to meet other people who are like them," says Fischer. "It introduces very special people to what I feel is a very special school."

Science Fair Named in Honor of Kristina Taylor

Beginning in 2023, the Dio cese of Oakland Science Fair will be renamed the Kristina Taylor Diocese of Oakland Science Fair in honor of beloved SJND science teacher Kristina Taylor (formerly Kristina Stone), who passed away in 2020 following a years-long battle with cancer. Taylor, who worked at SJND for nearly 20 years, taught various science classes, including Biology, AP Biology, Honors Chemistry, Human Anatomy and Physiology, and AP Environmental Science, and was also instrumental in the launch of the Diocese of Oakland Science Fair in 2010.

Mrs. Taylor's parents say that they feel extraordi narily honored with this tribute to their daughter. "She always told us about the awesome projects, and we were always impressed with the research that students completed," says Patrick Stone, Mrs. Taylor’s father.

Mrs. Taylor was devoted to launching and organizing the Science Fair because she felt that it helped promote both the study of science among students and SJND as a community institution. "She really wanted to promote STEM programs at the school," remembers Mr. Stone. "She helped design the new science building. She wanted to build the science program up for the school to help fill the science building and make that a focal point. She wanted to attract new students to the school and make science fun for them."

The dedication of the Diocese of Oakland Science Fair to the memory of Mrs. Taylor will continue to high light the importance of science programs in SJND's cur riculum as well as the school's highly regarded science faculty.

"There is not a better way to share her memory than having the Science Fair named after her," says Jodi Stone, Mrs. Taylor’s mother. "It's just a true honor." "It brings tears of pride to our eyes and love to our hearts," adds Mr. Stone.

The Science Behind the Judging

A key part of the team behind the Diocese of Oakland Science Fair is Robert Lynch '77, who has volunteered his expertise since the inaugural event. At that time, Lynch was a member of the SJND Board of Trustees. "Principal Tony Aiello connected me and the SJND science chair up when the first Science Fair was to take place because they needed judges," Lynch remembers. "I offered to help gather and process the voting rubrics since I like process-optimization problems."

However, the inaugural Diocese of Oakland Science Fair had its share of challenges. "The first year was madness," Lynch says. "Four students and Mrs. Taylor were trying to collate hundreds of rubrics into a bunch of spreadsheets in real-time and get results that were reasonably trustworthy."

The team behind the Science Fair realized that in future years there needed to be a better method of calculating the voting. "The following year, I was the 'master judge' since there were so many ties in scoring," Lynch recalls. "When this led to all sorts of consternation in the judges' pool, I offered to write an algorithm to do fractional scoring and weighted scoring. The third year was smooth. Out of the chaos came a nicely sorted list of scores, with exactly no ties."

Lynch has continued to oversee the voting process ever since. "Each year following, I have provided the hands-onthe-computer skills to train the six to eight SJND student volunteers who pick up forms and key them into a trio of laptops while I collect their results, fix small problems, and process to the final readout," he explains.

While attending St. Joseph's, Lynch won awards through his participation in the San Francisco Science Fair. "In retrospect, none of my projects had much wow-factor," remembers Lynch. "But they were cleanly presented, had good science, and were obviously 100 percent mine without adult help. I was awarded three times with the US Air Force second place special award. How that happened three times is still a mystery. Still, it was fun."

Lynch says he hopes to see SJND students participate in the San Francisco Science Fair as he once did. "I would like to see SJND have a passel of students competing in the San Francisco Science Fair each year," says Lynch. "Competition in this way is good for Catholic education and good for SJND itself."

The Kristina Taylor Diocese of Oakland Science Fair will be hosted on Saturday, February 4, 2023 in the SJND Kelly Gymnasium.

Graduates have gone on to receive degrees in Physiological Science, Computer Science, Molecular Environmental Biology, and more. Many students are already off to prestigious graduate programs.

Launched in 2013, SJND's Biomedical Sciences program is among the most intensive college-preparatory science programs in the nation. The program offers project-based, transformative learning experiences in partnership with Project Lead the Way, a national nonprofit organization that supports STEM edu cation. The accelerated regimen of sixand-a-half years of science education packed into four years has helped prepare SJND students to succeed in a variety of fields after attending colleges such as UC Berkeley, Dartmouth, Johns Hopkins, and UCLA.

for success in their science programs in college. Cameron Gill '18 graduated from UCLA in May 2022 with a bach elor's degree in Physio logical Sciences and is currently at UCLA in a two-year master's pro gram in the same field.

"The biomedical sciences program had the perfect amount of exposure to many different topics," remem bers Gill. "The first class that we took, Principles of Biomedical Sciences, was a great way to get our feet wet in a lot of different areas in the medical field and the sciences. The teachers knew that we were coming in without much exposure or experience with these topics and gave us the confidence not to be afraid to ask questions. I feel I was able to carry that with me into college."

Gill points to the breadth of the program’s academics as an excellent introduction to various branches of biomedical sciences. "The program laid a foundation that piqued my interest in a lot of different areas by learning about different topics and career paths," he explains. "It gave me more direction going into college because I knew I was interested in a career in either medicine or research."

Joseph Picchi '18, is working as a psychophys ics researcher at the Neural Computation and Engineering Laboratory at UCLA while completing his degree in Com puter Science. "My motiva tion to join the biomedical sciences pro gram at SJND was my interest in math and science," recalls Picchi. "I didn't know that much about biomedical sciences because it's hard to learn about them before you're in high school. What I ended up enjoying most about it was learning about many subjects that aren't typically taught in a lot of other programs."

Though Picchi's interests led him to pursue a de gree in Computer Science, he notes that his interest in biomedical sciences is still part of his career aspirations. "Even though I now study computer science and engi neering, it was a very good way to gain an interest in human anatomy and biology in a way that hasn't left me. I now want to apply the skills that I have learned to biomedical companies doing data analysis or compu tational science. The SJND biomedical science program had a huge influence on my interest in that field, where I started at UCLA, and where I ended up going."

Surprising Career Paths

Several SJND graduates of the biomedical sciences program have found themselves on career paths outside of biomedical sciences, yet still recog nize the importance the program had on their educational development. Beatrice Levy '18 followed her interests in sustainability, fashion, and solving social justice issues to her current internship for Springclean, a Charlottebased sustainable-fashion nonprofit. She is a recent graduate of Davidson College and began a master's degree program in Sustainable Fashion at Glasgow Caledonian New York College this fall.

"Getting to learn about science in a way that wasn't straight from the textbook was really fun," remembers Levy. "The biomedical sciences program helped me focus my ability to study a lot of different aspects of a certain topic. That helped with going to a liberal arts college in which you're expected to study a broad area of topics."

While Levy entered Davidson considering a major in Public Health, her courses in Anthropology and focus on human behavior led her to reconsider her career goals to focus on her interest in sustainable fashion. "I have always been interested in fashion, and I realized that I could actually integrate that into an academic endeavor with my background in scientific skills instead of just a dream on the side," she says.

From SJND to Johns Hopkins

Mary Carmen Reid '17, who was part of the first cohort of SJND’s biomedical sciences

program, graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in Molecular Environmental Biology. "I was very excited about the opportunities of getting an internship or practicum experience in my junior or senior year because I have always been interested in medicine and healthcare," says Reid. "It's very difficult for young people to try out being in a healthcare setting, but at SJND it was much more open and a great experi ence. I really bonded with my classmates and my cohort, and a lot of the fundamental aspects of science that we learned in the program were very useful later on."

Levy sees her journey as a direct result of her SJND education. "I went from being in a biomedical program to being in an anthropology program to working in fash ion," she points out. "I think that's the important thing about biomedical science – it gives you skills to figure out what you like and don't like and learn how to work independently and in groups. Those are important skills because even if you don't end up doing something in the sciences they are still helpful tools."

Reid's career path has led her to the master of Public Health program at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. This year she received funding for a field placement in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, for five months to facilitate research and statistical anal ysis on congenital Chagas disease, a parasitic disease most prevalent in developing communities in Central and South America. She is now applying to go to med ical school and credits the SJND biomedical sciences program for showing her how many career options exist in the biomedical sciences and giving her foundational knowledge in several fields.

"The biomedical sciences program gave me con fidence and exposed me to many different sciences, which was very important," says Reid. "Once I got to Berkeley and spoke to my peers, I noticed that I was at a comparative advantage. The impact that my teachers had from the STEM programs was so important to my science education. SJND has a culture of not only hold ing students accountable but helpfully pushing them. So many of my peers who I went to college and graduate school with didn't start becoming interested in science until after high school or didn't feel capable. I'm happy to say that I have felt capable ever since I was 14 years old, and I think that's very unique."

Dream Flight Raises $90,000 for Student Scholarships

Benefactors turned out in force to make Saint Joseph Notre Dame High School's Dream Flight 2022 a rousing success on September 24. People from far and wide attended this year's event at the Clare mont Country Club, and when the night was through approximately $90,000 was raised in support of tuition assistance for SJND students.

SJND students played a major role in the event, serving as greeters as guests arrived, selling raffle tickets, providing live musical entertainment, and sharing their stories with benefactors, many of whom are SJND alumni.

"Our student musicians and student keynote were fan tastic. They stole the show and wowed all in attendance," said SJND Director of Advancement Lucy Lopez. "You could feel the excitement of reuniting for Dream Flight at the Claremont in support of our gifted and talented students. Meeting alumni and witnessing the love and generosity in the room only reinforced why I love what I do and why I love SJND."

This year's Dream Flight event was the first fundraiser held in person since 2019, and this year's attendees truly enjoyed being back together to celebrate the achieve ments of SJND students while raising money to support their education.

Once guests were seated in the dining room, SJND's One Voice chorale performed before the program of speakers began. Sophomore Kevin Nguyen '25 delivered

an inspiring speech thanking donors for their support and conveying the impact their generosity has had on his family. This year's Christi Matri Award was presented posthumously to Joseph J. and Bernice Ratto for their many years of support. Their sons Ronald Ratto, Christopher Ratto, and Michael Ratto '82, and their grandson Joshua Ratto accepted

From the Director of Advancement

As a relatively new member of the SJND staff, it is my great privilege to witness your generosity and brilliance at work each day in service of students and to help steward this institution as we work together toward a brighter future.

Because of you, SJND is blessed to once again be able to provide much needed tuition assistance to over 250 students, despite the lingering challenges. Your commit ment and support of SJND’s Annual Fund and special events provide opportunities and hope across our school; advancing academics, service, wellness and most importantly, providing critical support for our community of students, faculty, and staff.

Your philanthropic support provides the resources required for a top tier education, allows our students to dream bigger, and fills them with confidence to take steps toward realizing those ambitious dreams.

Each gift supports every aspect of the SJND experience and enables the school to respond to urgent and ongoing operations priorities for our students' needs in all compo nents of their educational experience. The need is great and your gifts ensure SJND executes on its mission by providing students with financial support today and tomorrow. Without your support and generosity, we could not continue the legacy that began 141 years ago. You are helping to write the next chapter at SJND. Our students' success is your legacy.

On behalf of the SJND Board of Trustees, administration, educators, and students, I thank you for your love and support. May God bless each and everyone of you.

The Joe Delsol '69 Memorial Scholarship Fund

“ J

oe Delsol was the first friend I ever had that always gave 100 percent effort to everything he did," says Mark Zimmerman '68. He then adds with a laugh, "It took a while, but eventually I began to try to do the same after I got out of school."

Lifelong friends Zimmerman and Joe Delsol '69 first met in the summer of 1957 when Delsol's family moved down the street from Zimmerman's family in Oakland.

After Zimmerman graduated from St. Joseph's in 1968 and Delsol graduated in 1969, the two remained close friends. Zimmerman was the best man at Delsol's wedding, and their friendship continued even when they lived in separate states. "Whenever we spoke to each other, it was like none of the time had passed," says Zimmerman.

Delsol passed away in March 2015 after a long battle with prostate cancer. Later in 2015, Zimmerman established a scholarship in Delsol’s name to provide opportunities to students who might otherwise be unable to afford an SJND education.

"When Joe passed, I thought that this would be a great way to honor his name and reputation," recalls Zimmerman. "He was the class president, an excellent bas ketball player, and held a few track records."

"I never had a friendship with any other guy like him," says Zimmerman. "This goes back 50 years, but anybody who was around then recognized Joe as such an in fluential guy and a leader. If this can honor his memory in any way, then I'm all for it. He is somebody that I will never forget."

“Since I was raised Catholic, I believe service is a valuable aspect of life. I would like to express my gratitude with a ‘pay it forward’ mentality, and will do my best to repay what you have given me at this point in time.”

The Richard '51 and Barbara Gregory Endowment Fund

Barbara Gregory knew that her husband, Richard Gregory '51, was a loyal SJND alumnus, but she never realized how much he support ed the school until after he passed away in 2008.

"Richard was a very private person, so he didn't talk about all that he did for the school, like starting an alumni list, calling all of the past alumni, and helping start the golf tournament," Mrs. Gregory said. Richard also worked closely with former Principal Tony Aiello and the Board of Trustees during the merger of St. Joseph's and Notre Dame high schools to ensure the continued success of the school as a co-educational institution.

When Richard passed, Mrs. Gregory discovered that he had been a generous donor to SJND. She decided to continue his support for the school by establishing the Richard '51 and Barbara Gregory Endowment Fund, which will fund tuition for SJND students into perpetuity.

"I want to help students and make sure that they get an education like my husband did," explains Mrs. Gregory. "It's the personal attention that they get from each teacher and the principal. They are encouraged by all the staff. You get a feeling of family and wholeness, and that God is working with them."

If you are interested in contributing to an existing endowment fund or leaving your own legacy at SJND by starting a named endowment fund, please contact Lucy Lopez, Director of Advancement at llopez@sjnd.org or 510-995-9456.

Saxton Family Scholarship Provides Opportunity

Delight and Leonard Saxton, proud grandparents of SJND alumna Rosie Saxton '19, established the Saxton Family Scholarship in 2019 to provide educational opportunities for students that they were unable to have themselves. "Our inspiration to start the scholarship came from the fact that neither one of us had the opportunity of going to college," says Delight. "We believe education is one way of building better adults one child at a time."

The generous scholarship represents the Saxton family's desire to help deserving students in the San Francisco East Bay whose lives would benefit from a Catholic, college preparatory education if these students had the financial capacity to attend SJND. "SJND has a very good program and classes that allow a student to pursue their passion," explains Delight. "The education available at SJND is excellent and money should not stop a deserving student from getting that education."

Jessica Chau '25, the 2021-2022 recipient of the Saxton Family Scholarship. Contact Director of Advancement, Lucy Lopez at llopez@sjnd.org or 510-995-9456.

Reunion Gatherings

Many classes celebrated reunions in 2022 by gathering, reconnecting, and reminiscing about their time on Chestnut Street. It was wonderful to see our Pilot family back together.

Living Legend "Mrs. Rod" Retires

It's hard to put into words the impact Gail Rodrigues '70 has had in her 47+ years at SJND. She has literally touched generations of the SJND family. How many hats has she worn? This photo from the 1980 yearbook, "Reflections," shows her as a math teacher, but that's just part of the story. Volleyball Coach, Basketball Coach, Athletic Director, Dean of Women, Math Department Chair, P.E. Teacher, Testing Coordinator, and most recently Substitution Coordinator only tell part of the story. "Mrs. Rod," as she is affectionately known, has been omnipresent at the school, stepping where and when needed, always with the success of our students and student athletes at heart. She and her husband, Ken, are retiring and moving to Alabama. We wish you well, Mr. and Mrs. Rod. May your retirement be filled with joy.

Note : Our readers can look forward to a feature story detailing Mrs. Rod's SJND legacy in our summer 2023 edition.
