The Kröller-Müller extension was a second year project. The key point of this exercise was to create an extension to a building that was already an composition of extensions. The main parts of the museum exist out of the original wing, designed by Henry van de Velde, the main extension, designed by Wim Quist and of course the sculpture garden. The big question was whether to design a completely new extension or to design an extension in which the elements used byVan deVelde and Quist are noticeable. In the final the final design the latter was chosen. The new extension, which houses the more private functions of the museum, is positioned as an counter part of the Van de Velde wing. Together they frame the entrance garden. As main layout for the floorplan a quite classical structure was chosen. There is a main hall that has “cabinets” on both sides. This cabinet structure is interrupted on multiple places creating view portals towards the beautiful landscape. Because this extension is partly lowered into the ground, the view that the visitors have is quite different from the views provided by the Quist part of the museum.

The Nobility of Making was the first Master project. It started with an analysis of Kunsthaus Bregenz by Peter Zumthor and Sammlung Goetz by Herzog & de Meuron.Out of this analysis terms such as tranquility and serenity arose. These terms stood for the balance between the elements of a building. Every aspect of the building is equal to each other and there should not be one that has priority over the other. This leads to a certain kind of soberness. For the eventual design some principles, which were extracted from the reference projects, were used as starting points. These principles were using geometrical shapes, the use of light and the use of a clear structure. These principles led to an open but clear floorplan. The spaces created are multifunctional spaces in which the users are guided by the objects in that space and the light. This makes that the art pieces in the museum for a great part responsible for the orientation of the people in the museum. It makes them even bigger focus points in the different museum spaces. The faรงade of the building is not only the protecting shell of the building. It also plays an important part in regulating the climate inside. The small metal shutters can determine the quantity and the pattern of natural light that will enter the museum. It can also work as and double faรงade creating a system that provides natural ventilation through the whole building.

Tectonic exercise was the second master project. The base for this project was the book ‘Studies in tectonic culture’ by Frampton. Another key part was the making of models. It started with making conceptual models of an existing space. In this case, the space was the auditorium space of the education center in Vrchlabí. Through these models the layering of materials, the distinction between the tectonic and stereotomic elements and the qualities of a space became clear. One important element in the joining of the stereotomic and tectonic parts in the reference project was the light. This lead to a light study on how the way light enters a room can change the perception of that space. The next part was to create a model based on what was learned from the previous part, existing out of two materials. It was important to understand how materials relate to one another and how the two are connected. This model heavily inspired the final design which was a library in the Genneper park. The interesting challenge for this design was to connect the heavy concrete reading rooms with the lighter book shelve construction. To establish this connection, two main orientations were chosen. One for the library and one for the reading rooms. Interlocking the two volumes made it possible for the light structure of the library to penetrate and merge with the structure of the reading rooms.

The bathhouse project in Govan was a project during my half-year study in Scotland. Govan is a neighborhood in Glasgow. It is known as a rough, industrial area with lots of poverty, but also with people that are proud to live there. The assignment was to create a building that would boost the area, strengthen the community spirit and make Govan an attractive area in Glasgow. The program chosen for this building was a bathhouse. Dating back to Roman times the bathhouse was a place where the community came together. A research was conducted to bathhouses. Not only the roman ones but also the many bathhouses that were scattered over Glasgow. As a location, a parking area near the river was chosen to situate the bathhouse.A small abandonaneddock, mend for pleasure cruises on the Clyde river was chosen as the heart of the building. This was also an opportunity for creating a small harbor that facilitates watersport activities. The building exists out of two wings. On housing the sport accommodations and the other wing houses the bathing and spa facilities. These two parts give the people of Govan a perspective namely, sport education and also a place where the community can gather. The area around the building is also modified. A set of squares is created to stimulate pockets of activity during a normal day, but also have the ability to organize large festivities in the neighborhood.

The masterly apprentice was the graduation studio. The goal was to analyze a building by an architect and by doing so get a full understanding of the working methods and reasoning of that architect. These methods than needed to be reflected upon using the theories of Swiss architect Miroslav Sik. To finish the project a design was made according to the lessons learned from the studied building and architect. This new design should have a visual connection with the analyzed building. For the analysis a building was chosen by architect Alvaro Siza. The building was the Auditorium theatre in Llinars del Valles. An important aspect in understanding the building was recreating a picture of an existing space in the building. This, together with actually visiting the building, led to many insights such as the use of the promenade architectorale, the usage of light, clustering of functions and an eye for detail. The lessons learned from the research were translated into a design for the Museum of Revolution. The program of the building was based on the events that were happening in Catalonia at that time and the fact that the building would be part of the cultural heart of Llinars del Valles. Through the design an actual understanding of the methods of Siza was established. By following them in a design process, it became clear where opportunities lay but also what the limitations were. A More elaborate explanation can be found in both graduation booklets.

The Amsterdam Zuid-Oost project consists out of two building blocks. One residential tower and one office tower. Both volumes are linked together by applying the same architectural language for the plinth volume of both towers and by creating vertical bands on both volumes on top of the pedestals. This project was partly in the SO phase and partly in the VO phase. Therefore, I could work on a wide range of studies concerning this project. Firstly, I conducted some volume studies to come up with a shape of the building volumes that looked aesthetically very nice but also functioned in a very efficient way. This volume study was combined with a column study since there were some restrictions concerning the amount of columns in the office building. Next to that, some sun studies were conducted to see how the shadow of the new volume influences its surroundings. Lastly, some images were created to see how the facade of the new residential tower worked and how the new volumes would fit in the new context.

Feyenoord City was a design of three residential building blocks with some commerce in the plinth. The building blocks were part of a masterplan of OMA and Barcode Architects got the job of designing these building blocks. These buildings were located near the new Feyenoord Football stadium. The new location of the stadium was on a piece of no man’s land in between three neighbourhoods with all very different characters. The new development unified these neighbourhoods and enlarged the quality of the area. This project was in the SO phase when I entered and the main focus was on one building block. There were some concerns sound problems at the facade that needed to be further investigated. Next to that, the volume as a whole needed a bit of re-designing especially on the connection of the two types of facade, one very playful and the other very strict, and the shape of the courtyard in relation to the depth of the housing units.

The Schipholpoort project in Haarlem needed a design on a relatively small plot for a large amount of housing units. The project was in the SO phase and the main concern was to find a volume or a couple of volumes that could house all the required square meters while fitting in the context while not looking too massive. This resulted in making a lot of variants of volumes and design principles in Rhino and in Foam to see which ones would look aesthetically the nicest but also functioned in a proper way. Next to the new volume that needed to be created, the car parking was an important challenge that needed to be tackled.A big amount of parking spots needed to be created on a relatively small and weirdly shaped plot. Therefore, a variety of plans was made to create the most optimal parking solutions while also serving the volumes of the housing blocks on top of the parking.

For a short amount of time I worked at the Bouvigne project. This project was an office building in Eindhoven commissioned by SDK vastgoed. The building itself has a quite straightforward shape with some parts that are pushed inwards, creating some outdoor terraces for employees and giving the building a certain playfulness. Next to that, the buildings aim was to be transparent and lights. This resulted in a large amount of glass in the facade and white slats the break the volume. This project was in the VO phase and I worked on redrawing some of the facade drawings because there was a changes in the quantity and position of the white slats as well as the total volume of the building. Next to that I also conduction a ceiling study to come up with a homogeneous ceiling that also offered a lot of flexibility in placement of separation office walls.

Transform three was a course I followed that was focused on the possibilities and characteristics of materials. Experimenting with different materials and ways these materials can be modified widened the view on how these materials are applicable. For the final product, two materials were chosen that had no obvious relation with each other to create a sculpture. This sculpture should be looked at as if it was a building. The materials chosen were concrete and rope. A relation occurred between the two materials where on the one side the rope almost acted as reinforcement in the concrete shape and on the other side the rope acted as main shape with the concrete as infill. The course provided a fresh look on how materials could be used and showed that sometimes using an alternative or even odd application of materials can lead to beautiful outcomes.

“Bouwen in America was a project initiated by the village council of America to stimulate the construction of starter homes in the village America.A team was composed that was responsible for the design of the building and the guidance of the new inhabitants through the building process.A local project developer together with another TU/e student and myself were selected. This project gave inside in the ins and outs of an actual building process. Form designing a building with only a small budget to interaction with municipality to consulting with a contractor. It was a great learning process and provided me with new insights that only practice can teach.

This project was the design of a small lounge shed in a garden. The clients provided a reference project they really liked and together with them the possibilities and their personal wishes were discussed. After processing all of the given information into a design, drawings and a 3D model were created with which the client could go to a contractor. One of the key features of the lounge is the openness of the corners. This creates a lounge which is quite enclosed from its surrounding but still provides great views on the meadow surrounding the lounge. Another important feature is the way the glass doors in the front faรงade can completely be moved inside the wall. By doing this the lounge becomes an covered extension of the garden.
