Department of Counselor Education Program Options Two Main Program Options: • Master of Arts (MA) degree in Education with a concentration in Counseling & Student Personnel – LPCC-Prep option is only available to students who began the EDCO program in Fall 2017 or earlier (If taking courses outside of the department, they need to be transferred in before you graduate)

• Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) School Counseling Credential – Child Welfare & Attendance (CWA) specialization

Master of Arts (MA) Degree Requirements 48-Unit/16 Courses Program – 18 Prerequisite units (6 courses) - taken during 1st year in program – 30 Advanced Coursework units (10 courses) • Includes project or thesis (EDCO 221 & 298/299) • Up to 6 units (2 courses) of EDCO 292 can be completed towards the MA degree at any site (K-12, higher education, community-based organization) – Field site supervisor should have a Master’s degree in counseling, education, or a related field. – Fieldwork hours need to involve counseling or counseling-related work. – Must complete 200 hours for each EDCO 292 course.

Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) School Counseling Credential Required for California K-12 public school counselors (elementary school, middle school, & high school)


Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) School Counseling Credential • PPS Credential Requirements: – 18 courses (54 units) • 15 content courses • 3 fieldwork courses (600 fieldwork hours)


PPS School Counseling Credential Fieldwork Hour Requirements: •

600 hours, under the supervision of a PPS Credential holder • Completed within at least two K-12 school levels (elementary, middle school, high school) • Minimum of 200 hrs. at each school level (e.g., 200 middle school hrs. & 400 high school hours) • Need to conduct both individual and group counseling (minimum of 25 group counseling hours) • Need to conduct counseling with diverse/multicultural populations (minimum of 150 hours working with students from a racial/ethnic background different from your own)


PPS Credential Child Welfare & Attendance (CWA) Specialization (9 additional units/3 courses) ■

Must complete all PPS School Counseling requirements plus the following: –

EDCO 293: Practicum in Child & Substance Abuse

*EDCO 285: Crisis Intervention and Trauma Counseling

EDCO 292: Supervised Experience in Counseling (150-200 additional fieldwork hours in the area of truancy/drop-out prevention)


CWA Specialization Fieldwork Hour Requirements •

Complete a minimum of 150 hours of fieldwork experience, under the supervision of a PPS Credential holder. • Minimum of 90 hours in a school setting in direct contact with students • Minimum of 30 hours in interdisciplinary experiences in a setting outside the field of education (e.g., law enforcement, juvenile justice, child health and welfare, mental health, social services, child protective services, and community based organizations) • Remaining hours can be at the discretion of the university supervisor


PPS School Counseling Internship Credential • Allows students to work and get paid as school counselors prior to completing the PPS Credential program. • To qualify for a PPS Internship Credential, you must: 1) Be a matriculated student in the Counselor Education graduate program and completed at least 9 units in the program 2) Be offered a school counseling position by a school district 3) Have passed the CBEST (or met equivalent requirements) 4) Apply for and receive the PPS Internship Credential from the Commission on Teacher Credentialing 5) Register in EDCO 292: Supervised Experience in Counseling every fall and spring semester while you are working under the internship credential
