Placing one of its most complete squads on the court in years, the Saint Joseph’s women’s tennis team enters the 2010-11 season with high expectations. The Hawks return five starters and 11 letterwinners in total as they look to improve upon their tie for 11th place at last year’s Atlantic 10 Championships. Under the guidance of third-year head coach Ian Crookenden, Saint Joseph’s will lean on veterans Maggie Mullaney, Laura Matz and Casey Robinson early in the season. Coming off a career-high 11 singles victories as a junior, Mullaney enters her senior campaign tied for seventh all-time in singles wins (31). Playing between the top three flights, Mullaney went 11-16 a season ago and posted a 7-11 mark in doubles action. Moving up in flights, Matz continually improved as the season went on. Finishing the season tied for most wins at the top doubles flight (five), she has boasted two successful seasons in doubles play and helps solidify the Hawks’ lineup in the middle flights. Seeing limited action due to injury, Robinson made an immediate impact for Saint Joseph’s as a rookie. Playing out of the top two flights, she finished the year with a 4-3 singles mark that included matches at the ITA Atlantic Regionals. With only limited doubles play, Robinson went 2-4, but enters the new season healthy and set to lead the Hawks at the top flight. One of the top rated players in the region, freshman Devi Jadeja brings the combination of talent, national experience and success to Saint Joseph’s roster. The ninth-rated recruit in Pennsylvania and 265th-rated high school player in the nation last year, Jadeja went 18-3 at No. 1 singles for Lower Merion High School and placed second in the Central League's singles tournament last fall. Advancing to the PIAA state tournament each of the past two years, Jadeja captured the Central League and District 1 AAA doubles title as a sophomore. A four-year letterwinner with the Aces, she helped her squad post a 21-5 record over the past two seasons. Juniors Kate Dowd and Tara Walsh and sophomore Nicole Esposito each saw extensive competition in their first seasons with the Hawks.

SEASON PREVIEW
Sophomore Casey Robinson
Playing out of the fifth slot for most of last season, Walsh was a mainstay for the Hawks, competing in 23 matches, including the Atlantic 10 Championships. Finishing second in doubles wins (six), Walsh and Dowd combined for five wins between the second and third doubles flights. Tying for the team lead in victories at the sixth singles flight (three) last year, Dowd helped solidify the back end of Saint Joseph’s roster as the season went on. Competing in 17 singles matches and 21 doubles contests, Dowd gained valuable experience at the A-10 Championships, claiming a doubles win and was ahead in a singles match against La Salle before it was called. Appearing in 26 matches, Esposito played four different flights as a rookie between the third and sixth flights. Seeing most of her playing time at the fourth flight, Esposito tied for second on the team in singles wins with seven, racking up five of those victories between the third and fourth flight. Competing for starting spots are seniors Alexis Arons and Erin Malafronte, juniors Melissa Glick and Sally Kalani Stainier, sophomore Jenna Procyk and freshman Michele Vona. Malafronte posted two doubles wins and one singles victory, while Arons won her first career matches in both singles and doubles last year. Glick saw limited action at the lower flights, posting both a singles and doubles win, while Stainier fought back from injuries to go 7-9 in singles play. Procyk earned a singles win over Villanova in a limited role as a freshman last year, while Vona walked on to this year’s team after playing at the top flight as a senior at New Hope-Solebury High School last season. With his best lineup yet at Hawk Hill, Crookenden has again put forth a challenging schedule for his team, including the Towson 4+1 Classic, the Inaugural Saint Joseph’s Invitational and the ITA Atlantic Regionals in the fall. The six-court Saint Joseph’s Tennis Complex will be home to the Hawks’ tournament, with SJU’s home courts switching to the Upper Dublin Sports Center in the winter. Facing five Atlantic 10 foes in the spring, Saint Joseph’s hopes its early experience against conference foes will help improve its chances at this year’s Atlantic 10 Championships at the Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va. Slotted to finish 11th, Crookenden has the Hawks poised to prove voters wrong and continue their upward march to become one of the top teams in the Atlantic 10 and the region.

Al Laveson
Head Coach Emeritus Temple ‘53 - 45th Season
HEAD COACH EMERITUS
Hawk Hall of Famer Al Laveson returns for his third as head coach emeritus and 30th season overall with the women’s tennis program at Saint Joseph’s University. The 1953 Temple graduate compiled a 495-552 overall record in 44 seasons with both SJU tennis teams, setting the Saint Joseph’s mark for most wins by any coach in Hawk history. During his 27 seasons as head coach of the women’s team, Laveson guided Saint Joseph’s to a 184-200 record, while coaching the men’s squad to a 311-352 record over 44 years. In 2006-07, Laveson coached one of his best teams, as the Hawks set a single-season record for wins, finishing the year 12-10, including a tie for 11th at the Atlantic 10 Championships. Along the way, Stephania Velazquez became only the second Saint Joseph’s player to earn A-10 All-Conference honors, as SJU’s top player earned Second Team accolades. Laveson also guided Jhennifer Kedzierski to a recordsetting season at No. 2 singles as the rookie, became the all-time wins leader at the No. 2 flight and set a single-season record for victories with 16. Several other records fell during the season as Krysta Contino became the all-time leader in wins at No. 5 singles (10) and Gina DiGiacomo moved into the top-five for all-time wins at No. 4 singles with 11. Laveson also guided the women’s tennis program to three 10win seasons and began his career with the women’s team posting eight consecutive winning seasons. Inducted into the Saint Joseph’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 2001, Laveson was the first Hawk mentor to reach 400 career wins with a men’s tennis victory over Towson in the fall of 2002. He was only the second Hawk coach to reach the 300-win plateau in 1994, joining the legendary Bill Ferguson, who guided the basketball team to 309 victories over 25 years. Captain of the Temple tennis team as a collegiate player, Laveson has taught professionally for the United States Professional Tennis Association for the past 43 years. He is also a past vice president of the organization. Laveson retired from his full-time teaching position at Central High School in Philadelphia just before the 1994 season. Prior to his arrival at Central in 1987, he taught for 33 years at Penn Treaty Junior High School. Besides coaching at Saint Joseph’s, Laveson coached the boys’ tennis team at Father Judge High School for two years in the early 1960s and coached girls’ field hockey at Central. He won City Championships in badminton and tennis at Central, along with a gymnastics title while at Penn Treaty. Laveson, who resides in Philadelphia, is the father of three sons, Bob, Dave, and Peter. The two eldest sons were both Saint Joseph’s tennis team captains under their father.

Bayliss is a former team captain for the Hawks, donning the Crimson and Gray from 2005 to 2009. He won 40 singles matches in his career, ranking him ninth in program history. As a freshman, his 21 singles victories tied him for the secondhighest single-season win total in Saint Joseph's history. He also notched 20 doubles wins that year. As an upperclassman, Bayliss played in the top doubles flight and secured 20 career victories against the opposition's top duos. Bayliss earned numerous accolades after his senior season as he was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Academic Team and the Philadelphia Inquirer/PhillySIDA Academic All-Area Team in 2009. During his high school years, Bayliss was a three-time YAIAA doubles and a two-time YAIAA singles champion. Saint Joseph’s University
SJU TENNIS COMPLEX
Opened in the Fall of 2009, the Saint Joseph’s tennis program moved to the SJU Tennis Complex at the Maguire Campus. The new Tennis Complex adds six new courts as well as new offices and locker rooms for both the women’s and men’s tennis teams. Under head coach Ian Crookenden, Saint Joseph’s has mapped out a plan to extend the program’s reach on campus, regionally and nationally, starting with the Hawks’ new home. The long-time home of the Episcopal Academy, the 38-acre James J. Maguire Campus adds 52 classrooms, eight full laboratories, 113 offices, and 14.5 acres of sports fields to Saint Joseph’s University's current 65-acre footprint. Prior to moving across campus to the new SJU Tennis Complex, the Hawks played their matches on Finnesey Courts. Adjacent to Finnesey Field, the Finnesey Courts were home to the Hawk women’s and men’s tennis teams since the late 1940s. After briefly disappearing in the late 1990s due to Mandeville Hall’s construction, the Finnesey Courts were refurbished in the summer of 2000 to provide a better playing facility for the athletes. The Saint Joseph’s women’s tennis team compiled a record of 82-134 on Finnesey Courts from 1983-09. Saint Joseph’s began competition playing its home matches at the nearby Narberth courts. When courts were first built on campus, they were located where Bellarmine Hall now stands. Due to Bellarmine’s construction in the summer of 1960, however, the Finnesey Courts were torn down and rebuilt in their current location. With the addition of the SJU Tennis Complex, the Hawks now offer 10 courts and year-round state-of-the-art training facilities for student-athletes.

On March 2, 1975, the idea of what is now the Atlantic 10 Conference was conceived. What started as an eight-school, men’s basketball-only affiliation has grown into a 14-university, 21-sport league that is universally hailed as one of the best conferences in the country. That growth and prominence is a direct result of the ideals and commitments of the member institutions of the Atlantic 10 - the University of Dayton, Duquesne University, Fordham University, The George Washington University, La Salle University, University of Massachusetts, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, University of Rhode Island, University of Richmond, St. Bonaventure University, Saint Joseph's University, Saint Louis University, Temple University, and Xavier University. The 14 member institutions of the A10 are united and strengthened by their diversity. Each is extraordinary in its educational mission, whether of a Catholic faith, a private university or a land grant institution. The varied pursuits of each member prove that there are many threads that weave the fabric for a great conference. The presidents and chancellors of Atlantic 10 institutions, in conjunction with Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade, have made a strong commitment to making the academic and athletics equation a successful one. Over the years, the league membership has strived to better recognize the academic accomplishments of its student-athletes. The Commissioner's Honor Roll, which cites every Atlantic 10 student-athlete with a 3.5 grade point average or better, recognized 1,199 student-athletes in the Fall 2009 while 1,181 were named to the Spring 2010 Honor Roll. The league sponsors Academic AllConference teams in each of its sports and honors one student-athlete per sport as the A-10 Student-Athlete of the Year. Moreover, the Atlantic 10 provides four postgraduate scholarship grants to qualified student-athletes. In 2009-10, nearly 200 student-athletes earned Academic AllConference recognition, while Xavier’s Kelly Ruth and Charlotte’s Adam Gross along with Lauren Olson and Whitney Roth of Saint Louis received postgraduate scholarship grants.

The Atlantic 10 has 59 of the 841 Division I sports teams being honored with public recognition awards for their latest multi-year Academic Progress Rate scores. This represents an increase of nine A-10 teams from last season and 25 two years ago. All 14 A-10 institutions had at least one program recognized, while twelve schools had multiple teams garner distinction. In addition, all 21 sports sponsored by the conference were represented by at least one A-10 program. Among the 31 Division I conferences, only the Atlantic 10, the Ivy Group and the Patriot League had each of its member institutions receive public recognition awards for one or more programs. Among the 21 sports sponsored by the conference, women's tennis had a leaguehigh six A-10 teams honored, while five teams earned distinction in both men’s and women’s outdoor track & field and men’s indoor track & field. Overall, Fordham had a league-best 11 teams recognized in conference-sponsored sports, followed by Saint Joseph’s and Xavier with seven apiece. The Atlantic 10 also boasts 65 teams with a perfect graduation rate according to the NCAA Graduation Success Report on Division I student-athletes. Moreover, five A-10 institutions enjoy average graduation rates of 90 percent or higher in leaguesponsored sports, led by Dayton's average graduation rate of 97.38 percent. The Flyers are followed by George Washington (94.10), Xavier (93.23), La Salle (90.40) and Fordham (90.13). The A-10 features eight women's tennis and women's soccer programs that enjoy a 100 percent graduation rate, while six men's teams in both golf and tennis have a 100 percent graduation rate. The Atlantic 10 Conference, with a total population of nearly 74 million people within its geographic footprint of eight states and the District of Columbia, will crown champions in 21 sports this season: baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, field hockey, men's golf, women’s lacrosse, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track & field, women's rowing, men's and women's soccer, softball, men's and women's swimming & diving, men's and women's tennis, and women's volleyball.

SAINT JOSEPH’S UNIVERSITY ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT
The Mission of the Athletics Department at Saint Joseph’s University reflects the Mission of the University by using the programs within Athletics as a way to develop the whole person and preparing men and women for others.
• To educate the whole person by complementing the academic experience with athletic and recreational programs and activities outside the classroom. • To create an environment for personal growth through open ness, respect, and a concern for others.
• To communicate the value of community and family through team work and sportsmanship. • To provide opportunities for students to learn self-discipline, responsibility, decision-making, and attainment of goals. • To provide opportunities for students to participate and compete in a first-class manner.
• To provide equitable opportunities for all students and staff, including women and minorities. • To advance the University regionally and nationally through intercollegiate athletics.
The Saint Joseph’s Hawk mascot has been flapping its wings for more than a half a century. One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Hawk is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph’s motto, “The Hawk Will Never Die”. Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season. The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its 50-year history. It has been selected as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook and ESPN College Basketball magazine and was a nominee for the 2008 Mascot Hall of Fame.

Founded in 1851, Saint Joseph’s is an independent, Catholic, Jesuit university teaching disciplined reasoning, effective communication and a love of learning. From Willings Alley in Old City Philadelphia to Stiles Street in North Philadelphia to its current location on City Avenue, Saint Joseph’s has continued to grow and change with the times. The University combines the Jesuit tradition of academic excellence, a history of service and an ideal campus location to produce successful students who strive to make a good world even better. Full-time, undergraduate day enrollment comprises approximately 4,600 students. Graduate, evening and executive programs push total enrollment to more than 8,000 students.
THE JESUIT TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Saint Joseph’s nationally-recognized academic reputation is confirmed by ongoing acknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News & World Report and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tradition of intellectual inquiry and personal concern manifests itself in small, challenging classes taught by a caring faculty. Graduate assistants do not teach, so undergraduates can be sure they are receiving the very best educational experience from trained experts. One-on-one interaction between students and faculty is a reality at Saint Joseph’s. A solid liberal arts curriculum provides across-the-board learning for every student. Supporting that curriculum are comprehensive academic majors and learning facilities. The result is a broad education that prepares students not only for employment and graduate school, but for life itself. In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25 million Owen A. Mandeville Hall, which houses the Erivan K. Haub School of Business, the Center for Food Marketing and the region's first "Teletorium" and "Moot Boardrooms." An 87,000-squarefoot international academic center featuring state-of-the-art distance learning technology, it is located near the corner of 54th Street and City Avenue. A HISTORY OF SERVICE The students of Saint Joseph’s University are dedicated to making today’s world even better. A natural spirit of volunteerism has enabled the University’s community service programs to become the most popular extracurricular activities on

campus. In addition, a Service Learning program allows students to receive academic credit for their work outside the classroom. SJU offers local, national and international opportunities for student service. From North Philadelphia to Camden, N.J.; from New Orleans to the Appalachian Mountains, Saint Joseph’s students embrace the Jesuit mission of serving those in need. The Thanksgiving Dinner Dance for area senior citizens and the Hand-inHand Festival for the handicapped are two annual student-run events that draw thousands of special visitors to campus for fun and friendship.
IDEAL CAMPUS LOCATION SJU’s City Avenue location combines the best of dynamic Philadelphia with the suburban, residential setting of the elegant Main Line. Saint Joseph’s 65 acres span two counties, allowing students to literally enjoy the best of both worlds. The city of Philadelphia, with its tremendous wealth of historical, cultural, social and athletic attractions, is easily accessible, while the safety, serenity and greenery of a suburban campus are right at hand. The friendly atmosphere and close-knit campus ensure that students don’t get lost in either the literal or the figurative sense at Saint Joseph’s. Expanded library, computer and athletic facilities add a big-time “feel” to this growing university. SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS Men and women leave Saint Joseph’s prepared. The University boasts an excel-
lent record of placing its graduates in firsttime jobs, professional schools and other advanced degree programs. Part-time work and internships provide real-world experiences, the kind which delight future employers. And with its many diverse student organizations, SJU offers ample opportunities to assume leadership positions. An extensive on-campus recruitment program provides graduates with a head start in their employment search. Regular meetings with faculty advisors, along with advisory programs in the health professions and in pre-law, assist students who wish to further their schooling. PHILADELPHIA SJU’s Philadelphia location gives students access to two worlds. The campus resembles a park, surrounded by the stately homes of Philadelphia’s historic Main Line suburbs. Yet students have access to the cultural, commercial and recreational activities of downtown Philadelphia -– only a short ride away. SJU students take frequent advantage of the artistic and cultural resources Philadelphia offers, as well. They visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; the Franklin Institute Science Museum; the Academy of Music, which houses ballet and opera; and the new Kimmel Center, home to the Philadelphia Orchestra. In addition, SJU students enjoy rooting for Philadelphia’s teams in the four major professional sports leagues.
