2013 SEASON OUTLOOK

Coming off of a 5-11 season that saw a majority of the senior class break into multiple career categories, including games played, goals, assists, and points, the Saint Joseph’s women’s lacrosse team will look to combine veteran experience with rookie talent in the 2013 season. Although the Hawks lost seven of last season’s starters due to graduation, head coach Denise Roessler believes in both the dedication and versatility of her 18 returners and 10 newcomers. “With a rigorous fall season behind us, I anticipate a strong, fit squad to compete this season,” said Roessler. “We are looking for contributions from all of our classes.”

The Hawk Will Never Die!

ATTACK AND MIDFIELD

The trio of fifth-year senior Meghan McDevitt, junior Val Paolucci, and 2012 Atlantic 10 All-Rookie selection Julia Falcone will look to bolster the offensive line. Roessler expects the experienced McDevitt to lead the attack as the standout has started 48 of 51 games in her career on Hawk Hill. Last season, the IWLCA Division I Academic Team selection ranked third on the team in scoring with 23 points (13g, 10a) en route to ranking fifth all-time in career assists (35). Paolucci finished last season tied for second on the team in goals with 24 and tied for the team lead in assists with 10. The junior demonstrated her offensive power with two five-point games and will be expected to contribute again this season on the offensive end of the field. After an all-star caliber rookie season in which she led all freshmen in scoring with seven goals, Falcone returns for her sophomore campaign after being named to the Atlantic 10 AllRookie Team. The Hawks will look to 2012 All-Philly Third Team selection Abby Ananian on both the attack and midfield this year. Last year, the junior led the team in draw controls en route to being ranked 12th nationally in the category. Senior Maggie Mauer and junior Michele Granger will also return to the midfield this season, accompanied by sophomores Molly Curcio, Hannah Hutchins, Gianna Minutillo, and Hallie Pickard. “They’ll look to bring a spark to the offensive end,” said Roessler. Newcomers Bianca Angstadt, Emily Bowers, and Bonnie McShane will add to the attack, while freshmen Courtney Emanuele and Taylor Farrell will be expected to help in the midfield.

DEFENSE AND GOALKEEPER

Co-captains Alisha Aquilino and Brittany Hanrahan and senior Alexa Matthews will lead the defensive unit this season. In 16 starts last season, Aquilino made 109 saves and posted a 11.13 goals against average on the season. The senior captain ranks third all-time in career goals against average with an impressive 9.31. Hanrahan caused seven turnovers and picked up an equal amount of ground balls in 2012. The junior captain has started

more than half of all games in her two-year career and will play a vital role on the defensive end this season. Matthews played in all 16 games last season, with 15 starts, while picking up 16 ground balls and causing nine turnovers. Roessler has high expectations for juniors Allison Heath, Kaitlyn McSwiggan, and Meghan Watkin to play integral roles on defense while seeking contributions from freshmen Caroline Hagan, Kelly Phelan, Alicia Singley, and Mary Margaret Tonner. In addition to Aquilino’s experience between the pipes, the Hawks will also look to sophomore Nora McGeever and freshman Genevieve Giblin. McGeever made three saves in three games last season, while Giblin is coming off of an impressively strong fall campaign.

OVERALL

On the season as a whole, Roessler expects the team holds great potential for success. “Based off of the fall season, I believe that this team has great chemistry and a strong work ethic. With the addition of a strong and talented freshman class in every position, I anticipate significant contributions from all.”

Denise Roessler returns for her 15th year as head coach of the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team in 2013 and is the longest tenured coach in the program’s history. In 14 years with Saint Joseph’s, Roessler has compiled a 76-139 record highlighted by two Atlantic 10 Tournament appearances and the A-10 Coach of the Year award in 2009. Roessler's position at SJU was upgraded to full-time status in 2006 and within three years of that move, she guided the Hawks to the 2009 Atlantic 10 Championship game. It marked Saint Joseph's second Atlantic 10 Tournament appearance, with the first one coming under Roessler in 2001. Roessler led the Hawks to the school’s most successful season in 2009 with the program’s first appearance in a championship final, marking the school’s second A-10 Tournament berth since 2001. The Hawks, who fell just short of the A-10 title as they were edged by Massachusetts, 15-14, in the championship game, finished with a program-best 5-2 record in the A-10 that season, tying for second place and posting an overall record of 10-8. Since guiding Saint Joseph's into A-10 play, Roessler has seen her student-athletes earn A-10 AllConference honors 34 times and All-Academic recognition on 23 occasions. A 1995 graduate of Old Dominion, where she earned a bachelor’s of science degree in sports medicine, Roessler previously served as the head women's lacrosse coach at La Salle University. She led the Explorers to a 5-9 overall record in their inaugural season of varsity competition in 1998. Roessler came to SJU in the fall of 1998 and spent three years as an assistant field hockey coach in addition to her head coaching duties with the Hawks’ lacrosse program. Before joining the college coaching ranks, Roessler served as the head junior varsity and assistant varsity field hockey coach at Bishop Eustace Prep. In 1995, she led Bishop Eustace to an undefeated 10-02 record. In the spring of 1996, she joined the staff at her alma mater, Camden Catholic ('91), as a volunteer assistant lacrosse coach. At Old Dominion, Roessler played women's lacrosse under Sue Stahl, who also served as the United States National Team head women's lacrosse coach from 1989-2005. A native of Mt. Laurel, N.J., Roessler was a First Team All-Conference and All-Parochial selection in lacrosse as a senior at Camden Catholic. Roessler is a member of the selection committee for the United States team that will compete in the World Cup in the summer of 2013. She currently resides in Marlton, N.J. with her husband, Scott, and their daughter, Jordan.

In his first five seasons, Villanova was recognized twice, in 2007 and 2010, by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association as one of the nation's most improved teams. In 2010, Chagan coached 10 Big East Academic All-Stars. Chagan came to Villanova from Chestnut Hill College where he was the head women's lacrosse coach from 2003-05. FINNESEY FIELD/THE HAWK Finnesey Field, currently in its 83rd year, has been home to 10 different varsity squads at Saint Joseph’s. Opened in 1929 as home to the SJU football squad, the field has undergone numerous changes over the years and has been home to over a thousand SJU varsity games, matches and track meets. The most recent upgrade occurred in 2008 when the AstroTurf, laid down in 2001, was replaced with new, state-of-the-art TigerTurf. Home to the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams, men’s and women’s soccer teams, the field has seen other modifications since its inception in 1929. The prospect of a 70,000-seat bowled stadium for football was dashed when the sport was discontinued following the 1939 season. Baseball re-occupied the space in 1947, calling Finnesey home until 1959. Saint Joseph’s men’s soccer began in 1958 and played every season but one (1960) at Finnesey. In 1960, the original grandstand, as well as the hillside seating near Overbrook Avenue, were eliminated as Villiger (now Post) Hall and the Bluett Theatre were built. In the process of the 1960 construction, the field’s elevation was raised five feet to its current location. In 1990, artificial turf replaced the grass, making Finnesey a true multi-purpose facility. In 1994 the installation of lights furthered the use of the grounds, while new bleachers in 2003 on the hill next to Mandeville Hall were another touch of renovation to a historic stadium. The women’s lacrosse squad is 60-83 in 19 seasons on Hawk Hill. The best season came in 2004 when the Hawks went 5-2 en route to an 8-6 campaign. The first game was played on March 23, 1993 when

One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Saint Joseph's Hawk has been flapping its wings for 56 years. 9 The Hawk, which celebrated its golden anniversary in 2005-06, is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph's motto, "The Hawk Will Never Die." Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season. The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its 56-year history. It has been selected as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook, ESPN College Basketball magazine and was nominated for the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2008.

2013 Women’s Lacrosse

15

2012 REVIEW Despite a 5-11 overall record in 2012, the Saint Joseph’s women’s lacrosse team saw each of its graduating seniors put their names in the SJU record book. Although the Hawks ultimately fell short of their postseason aspirations, head coach Denise Roessler was pleased with the effort her tight knit group showed on and off the field. Led by the 44-goal season of senior Grace Dinn, the Hawks put double-digit goals on the board in half of their games. With her explosive season, Dinn found herself fifth all time in scoring with 121 career goals. Helping her find the back of the net was senior Alana Glanell, who moved her way up the ranks into sixth with 32 career assists. Patrolling the midfield, seniors Julie Mineweaser and Jen Peters also stamped their names in the SJU records their own ways. Mineweaser cracked into the top 10, climbing over the century mark with 106 ground balls to go with her 53 caused turnovers, which is good for seventh all time. Peters’s 88 career goals cemented her in the eighth spot as she scored double-digit goals each of her four years on Hawk Hill. On a defense that led the Atlantic 10 in caused turnovers, a pair of seniors did their part to rewrite the defensive stats. Alli MacDonald continued her dominance on the backline in 2012 causing 24 turnovers as she accumulated a total of 67 in her career to grab first all time. Her defensive partner and three-time A-10 second-team honoree Elizabeth Fox caused 62 in the Crimson and Gray to tie for fourth all-time. Senior Carly Kindbom chipped in on the defensive end to lead all defenders with 10 goals while junior Heather Olson and sophomore Brittany Hanrahan stepped up to play key minutes as they are expected to fill the shoes of the departing seniors. Other bright spots came by way of sophomores Abby Ananian and Val Paolucci. As the draw specialist, Ananian controlled 65 draws to go with her 15 goals and seven assists. Paolucci helped to add 24 goals as she shot over 46 percent.

Dinn ties for first all-time in games played (66) and ranks third in shots (315), fifth in goals (121) and sixth in points (141). Between the pipes, junior Alisha Aquilino started all 16 games, stopping 109 shots and picking up 19 ground balls. The squad started the year off with a loss to Drexel but rebounded just three days later when it topped Wagner, 14-7, in the home opener as Dinn led Saint Joseph’s with five goals. After tough losses to Monmouth and Jacksonville, the Hawks bounced back with their most impressive win of the year with a 17-3 rout over Presbyterian that featured hat tricks from Ananian, Dinn and Mineweaser. Following the Presbyterian game, the group carried momentum into the next week when it beat Saint Francis (Pa.), 12-3, and Manhattan, 14-12, as Dinn combined to scored eight goals. From there, the Hawks dropped five straight including consecutive one-goal losses to Rutgers and George Washington. To close out the season, the Hawks dropped three straight, including a 1310,overtime loss to Duquesne on Senior Day. After the five game skid, SJU grabbed it first conference win over St. Bonaventure, 17-11, on Finnesey Field. Dinn, Peters, and senior Meghan McDevitt highlighted the victory as they each posted five-point days. Although the Hawks lose a strong senior class next year, the 2013 Hawks are expected to return strong leadership and a solid

ATLANTIC 10 CONFERENCE

On March 2, 1975, the idea of what is now the Atlantic 10 Conference was conceived. What started as an eight-school, men’s basketball-only affiliation has grown into a 16-university, 21-sport league that is universally hailed as one of the best conferences in the country. That growth and prominence is a direct result of the ideals and commitments of the member institutions of the Atlantic 10 – Butler University, the University of Dayton, Duquesne University, Fordham University, The George Washington University, La Salle University, University of Massachusetts, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, University of Rhode Island, University of Richmond, St. Bonaventure University, Saint Joseph's University, Saint Louis University, Temple University, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Xavier University. In 2011-12, the Atlantic 10 was proactive in navigating the sweeping conference realignment issues, adding Butler University and Virginia Commonwealth University, both of which began full membership on July 1, 2012. The league was declared the “winner” of conference realignment by several media outlets, arguably strengthening the league to its best-ever lineup with a record 16 members institutions. The additions were part of a five-year Strategic Initiative Plan that was adopted during the 2010-11 academic year. The 16 member institutions of the A-10 are united and strengthened by their diversity. Each is extraordinary in its educational mission, whether of a Catholic faith, a private university or a land grant institution. The varied pursuits of each member prove that there are many threads that weave the fabric for a great conference. The Atlantic 10 Conference, with a total population of over 82 million people within its geographic footprint of nine states and the District of Columbia, will crown champions in 21 sports this year: baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, field hockey, men's golf, women’s lacrosse, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track & field, women's rowing, men's and women's soccer, softball, men's and women's swimming & diving, men's and women's tennis, and women's volleyball. The presidents and chancellors of Atlantic 10 institutions, in conjunction with Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade, have made a strong commitment to making the academic and athletics equation a successful one. Over the years, the league membership has strived to better recognize the academic accomplishments of its student-

THE UNIVERSITY

The Hawk Will Never Die!

Founded in 1851, Saint Joseph’s is an independent, Catholic, Jesuit university teaching disciplined reasoning, effective communication and a love of learning. From Willings Alley in Old City Philadelphia to Stiles Street in North Philadelphia to its current location on City Avenue, Saint Joseph’s has continued to grow and change with the times. The University combines the Jesuit tradition of academic excellence, a history of service and an ideal campus location to produce successful students who strive to make a good world even better. Full-time, undergraduate day enrollment comprises approximately 4,650 students. Graduate, evening and executive programs push total enrollment to more than 8,000 students. THE JESUIT TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Saint Joseph’s nationally-recognized academic reputation is confirmed by ongoing acknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News & World Report and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tradition of intellectual inquiry and personal concern manifests itself in small, challenging classes taught by a caring faculty. Graduate assistants do not teach, so undergraduates can be sure they are receiving the very best educational experience from trained experts. One-on-one interaction between students and faculty is a reality at Saint Joseph’s. A solid liberal arts curriculum provides acrossthe-board learning for every student. Supporting that curriculum are comprehensive academic majors and learning facilities. The result is a broad education that prepares students not only for employment and graduate school, but for life itself. In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25 million Owen A. Mandeville Hall, which houses the Erivan K. Haub School of Business, the Center for Food Marketing and the region's first "Teletorium" and "Moot Boardrooms." An 87,000-square-foot international academic center featuring state-ofthe-art distance learning technology, it is located near the corner of 54th Street and City Avenue. A HISTORY OF SERVICE The students of Saint Joseph’s University are dedicated to making today’s world even better. A natural spirit of volunteerism has enabled the University’s community service programs to becomethemostpopularextracurricularactivities on campus. In addition, a Service Learning program allows students to receive academic credit for their work outside the classroom.

SJU offers local, national and international opportunities for student service. From North Philadelphia to Camden, N.J.; from New Orleans to the Appalachian Mountains, Saint Joseph’s students embrace the Jesuit mission of serving those in need. The Thanksgiving Dinner Dance for area senior citizens and the Hand-in-Hand Festival for the handicapped are two annual student-run events that draw thousands of special visitors to campus for fun and friendship. IDEAL CAMPUS LOCATION SJU’s City Avenue location combines the best of dynamic Philadelphia with the suburban, residential setting of the elegant Main Line. Saint Joseph’s 65 acres span two counties, allowing students to literally enjoy the best of both worlds. The city of Philadelphia, with its tremendous wealth of historical, cultural, social and athletic attractions, is easily accessible, while the safety, serenity and greenery of a suburban campus are right at hand. The friendly atmosphere and close-knit campus ensure that students don’t get lost in either the literal or the figurative sense at Saint Joseph’s. Expanded library, computer and athletic facilities add a big-time “feel” to this growing university. SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS Men and women leave Saint Joseph’s prepared.TheUniversityboastsanexcellentrecordof placing its graduates in first-time jobs, profession-

al schools and other advanced degree programs. Part-time work and internships provide real-world experiences, the kind which delight future employers. And with its many diverse student organizations, SJU offers ample opportunities to assume leadership positions. An extensive on-campus recruitment program provides graduates with a head start in their employment search. Regular meetings with faculty advisors, along with advisory programs in the health professions and in pre-law, assist students who wish to further their schooling. PHILADELPHIA SJU’s Philadelphia location gives students access to two worlds. The campus resembles a park, surrounded by the stately homes of Philadelphia’s historic Main Line suburbs. Yet students have access to the cultural, commercial and recreational activities of downtown Philadelphia – only a short ride away. SJU students take frequent advantage of the artistic and cultural resources Philadelphia offers, as well. They visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; the Franklin Institute Science Museum; the Academy of Music, which houses ballet and opera; and the new Kimmel Center, home to the Philadelphia Orchestra. In addition, SJU students enjoy rooting for Philadelphia’s teams in the four major professional sports leagues.
