SEASON PREVIEW Saint Joseph's enters the 2014 season looking to return to the Atlantic 10 Tournament after barely missing last season. With strong leadership from their upperclassmen and a talented group of newcomers added to the mix, the Hawks have high expectations.

Picked to finish ninth in the A-10 Preseason Poll, Saint Joseph's head coach Jess Mannella feels that her team only has to prove to itself that they belong among the top teams in the conference.

"We only need to prove to ourselves that we belong are ourselves," said Mannella of the preseason ranking. "We are going to get our goals through hard work and playing the best soccer that we can."

Returning 19 letterwinners, including six starters, Saint Joseph's will look to its veterans to set the tone early.

At forward, juniors Olivia McEachern and Shannon Westhead will join sophomore Shannon Mulvey as starters.

An A-10 All-Rookie Team selection two seasons ago, McEachern was limited to just 12 games in 2013, including five starts. A speedy offensive forward, she finished fifth on the team in shots (13) last year and added an assist.

"Olivia is playing amazing right now," said Mannella. "She is a very dangerous player, especially with her speed."

Earning a larger role as a sophomore, Westhead will be looked to lead and contribute more this upcoming season. Appearing in all 18 games in 2013, she led the Hawks with three assists and added a career-best six shots and eight starts.

"Shannon is a work horse and never stops," said Mannella. "She is very good in one on one situations and able to get great crosses off."

Appearing in 15 games as a rookie, including a pair of starts, Mulvey has steadily improved, earning her coach's trust on the right wing.

"Shannon brings a lot of speed to our attack," Mannella said. "She adds a lot to our offense and has very dangerous services into the box."

Challenging for playing time at forward will be junior Ashley Volm, sophomore Maddi Todd and freshmen Lauren Dimes, Caroline Miller and Lindsay Walder.

Combining talent and leadership, the midfield of seniors Emily Irons and Jill Root and sophomore Emily Gingrich will give Saint Joseph's one of its most complete midfield in recent years.

Missing last year due to an injury, Irons returns to the field looking to help her team back to the conference postseason. Playing in 47 career games, the Doylestown, Pa., native has made 28 starts, including 17 in 2012.

"Emily brings great leadership on the field and that was something we missed last year," said Mannella. "She has great presence on the field and is one of the best in winning balls."

Starting 36 games over the last two seasons for SJU, Root has established herself as a tenacious player on both sides of the ball. Starting all 18 games a season ago, Root registered eight shots and has tallied 25 overall after coming to Hawk Hill after a season at Monmouth.

"Jill does all the dirty work in the midfield," Mannella said. "She sets up the attack by winning the ball. She is so dangerous off the dribble, so she will also see time out wide too."

The reigning A-10 Rookie of the Year and an A-10 All-Conference Second Team honoree, Gingrich made a name for herself in 2013 as she ranked among the conference leaders in goals (seven), assists (two), points (16) and shots (61). Starting all 18 games, Gingrich will look to continue to provide offensive fireworks for the Hawks this season.

"We have really high expectations for Emily," said Mannella. "She had a very good freshman year and a great spring and is playing at a very high level right now. She is a very good distributor and is a both a natural goal scorer and leader."

Adding depth and talent in the midfield for the Hawks will be junior Erica Graziosi, sophomores Meghan DiPippa, Ramsey McMenamin, Nicole Moonan and Paige Norris and freshmen Taylor Dillon and Shannon Walsh.

Playing four back on defense, Mannella will look to her upperclassmen to lead the way. Seniors McHale Perkins and Carly D'Esposito will join juniors Morgan Michon and Alysa Murphy in starting roles to begin the season.

Playing through injury for most of 2013, Perkins managed to appear in 15 games, and made 14 starts. Fully healthy, Mannella expects her co-captain to lead both verbally and by example.

Sophomore Emily Gingrich ranked among the conference leaders in goals and points en route to winning A-10 Rookie of the Year last season.

"McHale is playing better than ever right now and came into preseason very fit after struggling last fall," said Mannella. "We are looking for her to be a leader and continue to be a tremendous defender."

A constant in the SJU backline the previous three years, D'Esposito's experience will help bolster the defense this season.

"Carly is playing the best soccer of her career right now," Mannella said. " She is another strong leader and her one on one defending has been great."

After playing in just five games mostly in the midfield last season, Michon's move to defense and impressive play in the preseason has made her a strong favorite to earn the start at the outside back.

"Morgan has been very open about taking on a new role and has taken to playing outside back," said Mannella. "She really helps in joining in our attacks, but has also become a tenacious defender."

Murphy comes to Hawk Hill after two seasons at Marist. A mainstay in the Red Foxes' lineup, she appeared in a combined 39 games.

"It's great to have a newcomer in Alysa with Division I experience," Mannella said. "She brings some grit to the defense and she and McHale have really worked well off of each other."

Seeing extended playing time in past seasons, senior Katie Beattie and junior Lindsay Horst will help bolster the SJU defense alongside newcomer Alexa Austin.

In goal, junior Allison Ebling looked sharp in a pair of appearances last season and is set to take over the role left by Lauren Jancuska. Freshman McKenna Mullin, who had a stellar high school career at Neshaminy, will compete for playing time.

"Allison is a very athletic keeper and good at both stopping shots and distributing the ball off of saves," said Mannella. "McKenna is a strong worker and she is going to push both herself and Allison and make our team better for it."

Coming off a season in which they barely missed the conference tournament, the Hawks enter this year with a strong focus. And despite the loss of five starters, including the best offensive player in team history in Mo Hawkins, Saint Joseph's knows what it'll take to accomplish its goals.

"We have a lot of great leadership and potential, but we need to execute on a consistent basis. We are going to need everyone to be working towards the same goal and so far our training habits and practices have reflected that," Mannella said. "This team has depth and a great team atmosphere.

Most of them know what it felt like missing the postseason last year, and our focus and attitude is that it will not happen again."

SWEENEY FIELD Sweeney Field, formerly known as Finnesey Field, has been home to 10 different varsity squads at Saint Joseph’s University in over 80 years of use. Opened in 1929 as home to the SJU football squad, the field has undergone numerous changes over the years and has been home to over 1,200 SJU varsity games, matches and track meets. The pitch is the current home of the varsity men’s and women’s soccer and lacrosse teams.

The field was renamed Sweeney Field in Fall 2013 upon completion of an extensive expansion project. The venue has significantly increased the seating capacity for SJU’s varsity lacrosse and soccer programs. The new name recognizes the contributions of Sean S. Sweeney ’94 (MBA), a member of the University’s Board of Trustees and the lead benefactor to the renovation project. Sweeney Field was blessed in conjunction with Hawktoberfest on October 12, 2013 while a formal dedication was held on April 5, 2014.

The current expansion includes the addition of 1,200 permanent seats to the hillside nearest to the University’s iconic Barbelin Hall as well as the addition of 1,100 portable seats on the opposite side of the field, increasing total seating capacity to 3,000. In addition, the facility will includes a new state of the art press box and enhanced sound system.

Opened in 1929 and planned as the centerpiece to a 70,000-seat football stadium, SJU was forced to eliminate the field’s original grandstand and hillside seating in 1960 due to the construction of Villiger (now Post) Hall/Bluett Theater. Since 1990, the field has undergone a number of upgrades and enhancements designed to expand usage and functionality, including installation of AstroTurf artificial surface prior to the currently TigerTurf surface, lights (1994), and bleachers (2003). Additionally, the track received a new coat of rubber material in 2009 to better suit the athletes who use it for all seasons.

Finnesey Field was named after the late James T. Finnesey. A native of Wyncote, Pa., parishioner at the Gesu and president of a local auto manufacturer, he was a member of SJU’s Foundation Committee, which was established in 1922 to raise support for the College’s relocation to Philadelphia’s Wynnefield neighborhood.

Finnesey was a lead donor to the stadium project in 1927. Legend has it that a 1777 Revolutionary War skirmish took place on the site.

Currently the home of SJU men’s and women’s varsity soccer and lacrosse teams, Sweeney Field has also served as the home venue for Hawk baseball, field hockey, football and softball, in addition to peripheral usage by the men’s and women’s track teams, along with countless club, intramural and recreational activities.

Beginning in 1996, the Saint Joseph’s women’s soccer team has played 135 games on Sweeney Field over its 17 years of existance.

Over that time, the Hawks have posted a strong showing on their home pitch, going 71-61-15 to date.

Overall, the site has seen 1,259 games entering the 2014-15 academic year, and SJU teams put together a total record of 570-633-56.

The only coach in Saint Joseph’s program history to lead the Hawks to the Atlantic 10 Tournament, Jess Mannella returns for her 14th season at the helm of the women’s soccer squad. In 13 seasons, Mannella has turned around a team that posted a single A-10 win in the year before she arrived, to a highly-competitive club that has since made four postseason appearances and had 19 student-athletes garner Atlantic 10 All-Conference accolades.

Under Mannella’s guidance, the Hawks boasted two of the top offensive players in the A-10 last season in veteran Mo Hawkins and newcomer Emily Gingrich. The pair ranked in the conference’s top-10 for points, goals and shots, with Gingirich earning A-10 Rookie of the Year and All-Conference Second Team honors and Hawkins becoming the first SJU player to be named All-Conference all four years as she was picked as a First Team selection. Along with those honors, Mannella saw Hawkins cap her career tying for the all-time lead in goals scored (33) and earn Saint Joseph’s distinguished Class of 1950 Award.

Combining a roster of a veteran players with a mixure of youth and talent, Mannella guided the Hawks to their fourth A-10 Tournament appearance in 2012.

Picked to finish 13th, Saint Joseph’s played tenaciously under Manella’s guidance, boasting a conference best 0.41 goals against average in A-10 play and earning the sixth seed in the postseason tournament. Individually, Hawkins became just the second player in league history to be named A-10 Midfielder of the Year twice, while Christine Neal became the first SJU goalkeeper to be named to the A-10 All-Conference First Team.

The 2011 Hawks boasted one of its most formidable scoring tandems and got key goals and solid defense to keep them in contention for a conference postseason berth heading into the final weekend of the season. The pair of Hawkins and Jen Pfeiffer finished among the top 10 in scoring for the second straight year, while Hawkins’ play garnered her All-Mid-Atlantic First Team honors as well as A-10 Midfielder of the Year and AllConference First Team recognition. Earning AllConference Second Team honors, Pfeiffer set a new mark for career goals at Saint Joseph’s.

Several Hawks posted career years in 2010, while the team fought hard despite several key injuries.

Hawkins became the third player under Mannella’s gudiance to earn both A-10 All-Rookie Team and All-Conference honors in the same season, while Maggie Lupinski was named an All-Conference Honorable Mention. Additionally, Pfeiffer helped lead a SJU offense that increased its production in goals-per-game, assists and points from the previous year. Hawkins and Pfeiffer also became the first pair of SJU teammates to finish amongst the conference’s top 10 in scoring.

In 2009, Mannella pushed her team to the brink of a postseason berth as the Hawks remained in contention for the postseason heading into the regular-season finale. While SJU finished two points shy of its goal, the Hawks finished with a program-best 1.07 goals-against-average, with Lauren Sawyer earning AllConference honors and Neal garnering All-Rookie accolades.

Boosted by the 17th-best ranked recruiting class by SoccerBuzz.com in 2008, Mannella guided the Hawks to the fifth most-improved record in the nation at 8-7-4. Additionally, Saint Joseph’s surpassed the previous record for consecutive victories, stringing together five straight in 2008. Individually, several Hawks posted career years, while Pfeiffer excelled under Mannella’s guidance. Pfeiffer became just the second SJU player - and second under Mannella - to earn Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year and All-Freshman MidAtlantic Team honors.

HEAD COACH Compiling one of the toughest schedules in the region in 2007, Mannella’s young club responded, going 3-4-1 at home and had a pair of freshmen leading the way on offense.

Having graduated the Hawks’ top scorer and goalkeeper, Mannella’s coaching ability shined in 2006 as Saint Joseph’s fought into the final weekend for a playoff spot. Despite falling shy of the program’s fourth-straight postseason appearance, Mannella coached the Hawks to a single-season best 33 goals, while helping Ali Wean become the squad’s first ever A-10 Offensive Player of the Year. Wean also became the second Hawk under Mannella to earn A-10 First Team All-Conference honors, and the first SJU player to be named to SoccerBuzz.com’s MidAtlantic Third Team after scoring a single-season record 14 goals.

In 2004, Mannella guided the Hawks to new heights as Saint Joseph’s earned the team’s first postseason victory. Highlighted by a 1-0 win over La Salle in the A-10 Championship Opening Round, the Hawks posted a 9-11-1 overall record and finished 6-4-1 in conference play.

Bringing in several highly-touted recruits and transfers in 2003, Mannella led the Hawks to their first winning season in four years. Saint Joseph’s went 9-8-1 overall and set a program record for Atlantic 10 wins with a 7-4-0 record and qualified for its first A-10 Tournament. The seven-game improvement from 2002 to 2003 ranked among the best in the nation as Mannella guided three players to All-Conference or AllRookie recognition, including 2003 A-10 Rookie of the Year Megan Schutt.

Away from the sidelines, Mannella has also been instrumental in guiding the team’s previous trips to Brazil, Norway, Spain, California and Colorado. She has directed off-season camps to help raise money for the team, as well as local charities, and was instrumental in establishing volunteer and community service projects for the team.

Prior to coming to Saint Joseph’s in August of 2001, she spent one year as head coach at West Chester University, where the Golden Rams compiled a record of 10-9-1. In addition to her responsibilities of handling the soccer team, Mannella also coordinated all aspects of West Chester’s extensive summer camp.

A four-year starter at Delaware, Mannella earned her undergraduate degree in education in 1997. One of the top playmakers in Blue Hens history, she currently ranks 10th alltime in program history in assists (13) and helped her team to a 48-25-3 record from 1993-96. She returned to her alma mater as an assistant coach in April of 1999 and also served as an assistant women’s soccer coach at Temple for one season.

A native of Swarthmore, Pa., Mannella presently serves as head coach of FC BUCKS U17 NPL team and coaches the U7 and U8 CRUSA Academy. She is also currently working towards a master’s degree in educational leadership at Saint Joseph’s. A former standout at Strath Haven High School, Mannella currently resides in Wyndmoor, Pa., with her husband, Dan, and daughter, Josephine.

ASSISTANT COACHES Fred King Assistant Coach Goldsmiths College ‘02 - 3rd Season

Helping the Hawks to a 16-15-7 mark over his first two years and a berth into the 2012 Atlantic 10 Tournament, assistant coach Fred King returns for his third season on Hawk Hill.

During his tenure at Saint Joseph's, King has helped the team return to the A-10 postseason for the first time since 2005, while several players have garnered both conference and regional honors. Under his guidance, Mo Hawkins was named A-10 Midfelder of the Year as a junior and went on to garner A-10 AllConference First Team honors in 2012 and 2013, while being named to the NSCAA All-Mid-Atlantic Region Team both years. In 2012, King also helped to lead the Hawks to the A-10 best goals against average (.44 per game) and shutouts (5).

Last season, King guided freshman Emily Gingrich into becoming one of the top offensive players in the A-10 as she became the third Saint Joseph's player to be named A-10 Rookie of the Year, while also being selected to the A-10 All-Conference Second Team and All-Rookie Team.

King came to Hawk Hill after spending two seasons at Rutgers. Serving as Director of Soccer Operations, he helped the Scarlet Knights post an 18-17-4 record over that period, including a #17 ranking in the NSCAA National Poll in 2010.

Prior to joining Rutgers, King served as a State Development Coach for the Massachusetts Youth Soccer Association from 2008 until 2010.

Serving as head coach of the U-15 Olympic Development Program team, he led his teams to the Region 1 ODP finals in 2008 and 2009 and semifinals in 2010.

King began his collegiate coaching experience at Tufts University, serving as an assistant with the men's team in 2004 and 2005. From there he would served as a volunteer assistant with Harvard's men's team for the 2007 season. While with the Crimson, King helped the team advance to its second-straight NCAA Tournament and finish with the third most goals in the nation.

Working as a coach with the F.C. Greater Boston Bolts, King began his professional coaching career in 2005. Coaching the U-12, U-16 and U-18 boys squads, he helped the Bolts win state championships in 2006 and 2007 as well as the regional finals in the same years.

A 2002 graduate of Goldsmiths College, University of London, King was a three-year letterwinner and served as team captain of the First XI soccer team. Along with playing for the University of London Representative team, he also competed with Dulwich Hamlet Football Club.

Along with his duties with the Hawks, King is a staff coach for both the Players Development Academy and New Jersey Youth Soccer Association. King coaches the PDA (Players Development Academy) South U-14 and U-17 girls teams as well coaching on the Region 1 ODP Staff. King holds a USSF 'A' License, NSCAA Advanced National Diploma, USSF National Youth License and a KNVB National Diploma and is an instructor for New Jersey Youth Soccer Association Coaching Education Program.

King and his wife, Kristin, currently reside in Moorestown, N.J.

ASSISTANT COACHES Lane Davis Assistant Coach Wichita State ‘99 - 2nd Season

Lane Davis is starting his second season as an assistant coach at Saint Joseph's.

Working extensively with the goalkeepers his first year, Davis helped Saint Joseph’s finish tied for fifth in the Atlantic 10 in shutouts (six) and sixth overall in saves (86) and goals-against-average (1.34).

Individually, Lauren Jancuska ranked third in the conference in saves per game (4.56) and in the top 10 for save percentage, goals-against-average and shutouts.

Davis came to Hawk Hill after serving as an assistant at UMBC. In the fall of 2012, he helped goalkeeper Lauren Kadet earn America East All-Conference Second Team honors and defender Amira Walcott garner All-Rookie Team accolades.

Prior to coaching the Retrievers, Davis spent three seasons at George Washington (2009-11). During his tenure as an assistant coach with the Colonials, he was responsible for working directly with the goalkeepers while also serving as recruiting coordinator. George Washington had three players selected to Atlantic 10 All-Conference teams during Davis' three seasons, while the Colonials earned the NSCAA Team Academic Award recognition every year.

Davis began his collegiate coaching career as a volunteer assistant at Kansas. Over his three seasons with the Jayhawks, he helped guide the team to a Sweet 16 appearance in the 2003 NCAA Tournament. In 2004, Kansas won its first Big 12 title, made its second-straight NCAA appearance and achieved a #6 ranking during the year.

Following Kansas' success in 2004, Davis took over as an assistant at Missouri State.

Focusing on goalkeeper and defensive improvement, he helped the Bears' goalkeeper Jackie Jasper to a First Team All-Missouri Valley Conference selection, while defender Kate Hercules was named Defensive Player of the Year in the MVC. After his successful stint with Missouri State, Davis joined U.C. Riverside as recruiting coordinator and goalkeeper coach for two seasons. While with the Highlanders, he helped goalkeeper Brittany Goetz lead the Big West and set the team's single-season record for saves (135) in 2008.

A member of several state Olympic Development Programs, Davis is involved with Region II ODP where he has been the head goalkeeper coach for various age groups. He has earned the Advanced National Goalkeeping Diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and has both a National "A" License and National Goalkeeping License from the United States Soccer Federation (USSF).

Prior to coaching, Davis played collegiately at McPherson before suffering a career-ending knee injury as a freshman. He transferred to Wichita State where he earned a bachelor's degree in physical education and a minor in exercise physiology in 1999. Davis would go on to receive his master’s of education in sports administration from Kansas in 2002.

Kelsey Marchesano Student Assistant Capping her fourth season with the Hawks, senior Kelsey Marchesano will serve as a student assistant in 2014.

A three-year letterwinner, Marchesano is a member of the SJU Athletic Director's Honor Roll. After missing her freshman campaign due to injury, she rebounded to help the Hawks advance to the Atlantic 10 Tournament in 2012 and played in a career-best 11 games, including a start as a junior.

A four-year starter at Manalapan High School, Marchesano led her team to the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group IV State sectional championship game as a junior and sectional semifinals as a senior and helped her club team, the Albertson Fury, to titles at the 2009 and 2010 Disney Classic, three State Cup finals and an ECNL national finals appearance.

The Manalapan, N.J., native. is working on her degree in interdisciplinary health services.

Named an Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team and NSCAA All-Mid-Atlantic Region First Team selections in 2013, Mo Hawkins capped her career tied for the all-time record in goals (33) and is the only Hawk to earn All-Conference accolades all four seasons.

• The Saint Joseph's women's soccer team capped the season with a 7-8-3 overall record.

• The Hawks finished tied for ninth in the Atlantic 10 with a 3-4-1 record.

• Senior Mo Hawkins was selected to the A-10 All-Conference First Team, becoming the only SJU player to garner All-Conference honors all four years.

• Hawkins was named SJU’s female student-athlete recipient of the Class of 1950 Award and was also named to the NSCAA All-MidAtlantic Region First Team and ECAC All-Star Second Team.

• Hawkins capped her career tied for first all-time in goals (33), second in points (78) and shots (216) and third in assists (12). This season, she ranked first on the team in goals (eight) and points (17).

• Hawkins finished the season with a team-best four game-winning goals (versus Quinnipiac, Loyola, George Washington and Rhode Island).

• Freshman forward Emily Gingrich was named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year and was selected to the A-10 All-Conference Second Team and the A-10 All-Rookie Team.

SAINT JOSEPH’S UNIVERSITY ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT

The Mission of the Athletics Department at Saint Joseph’s University reflects the Mission of the University by using the programs within Athletics as a way to develop the whole person and preparing men and women for others.

• To educate the whole person by complementing the academic experience with athletic and recreational programs and activities outside the classroom.

• To create an environment for personal growth through openness, respect, and a concern for others.

• To communicate the value of community and family through team work and sportsmanship.

• To provide opportunities for students to learn self-discipline, responsibility, decision-making, and attainment of goals.

• To provide opportunities for students to participate and compete in a first-class manner.

• To provide equitable opportunities for all students and staff, including women and minorities.

• To advance the University regionally and nationally through intercollegiate athletics.

The Saint Joseph’s Hawk mascot has been flapping its wings for more than a half a century.

One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Hawk is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph’s motto, “The Hawk Will Never Die”.

Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season.

The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its 57-year history. It has been selected as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook and ESPN College Basketball magazine and was a nominee for the 2008 Mascot Hall of Fame.

THE UNIVERSITY Founded in 1851, Saint Joseph’s is an independent, Catholic, Jesuit university teaching disciplined reasoning, effective communication and a love of learning. From Willings Alley in Old City Philadelphia to Stiles Street in North Philadelphia to its current location on City Avenue, Saint Joseph’s has continued to grow and change with the times. Full-time, undergraduate day enrollment comprises approximately 4,670 students.

Graduate, evening and executive programs push total enrollment to more than 8,000 students.

THE JESUIT TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Saint Joseph’s nationally-recognized academic reputation is confirmed by ongoing acknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News & World Report and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tradition of intellectual inquiry and personal concern manifests itself in small, challenging classes taught by a caring faculty. Graduate assistants do not teach, so undergraduates can be sure they are receiving the very best educational experience from trained experts.

One-on-one interaction between students and faculty is a reality at Saint Joseph’s.

A solid liberal arts curriculum provides across-the-board learning for every student.

Supporting that curriculum are comprehensive academic majors and learning facilities.

The result is a broad education that prepares students not only for employment and graduate school, but for life itself.

In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25 million Owen A. Mandeville Hall, which houses the Erivan K. Haub School of Business, the Center for Food Marketing and the region's first "Teletorium" and "Moot Boardrooms."

An 87,000-square-foot international academic center featuring state-of-the-art distance learning technology, it is located near the corner of 54th Street and City Avenue.

A HISTORY OF SERVICE The students of Saint Joseph’s University are dedicated to making today’s world even better. A natural spirit of volunteerism has enabled the University’s community service programs to become the most popular extracurricular activities on campus. In addi-

tion, a Service Learning program allows students to receive academic credit for their work outside the classroom.

SJU offers local, national and international opportunities for student service.

From North Philadelphia to Camden, N.J.; from New Orleans to the Appalachian Mountains, Saint Joseph’s students embrace the Jesuit mission of serving those in need.

The Thanksgiving Dinner Dance for area senior citizens and the Hand-in-Hand Festival for the handicapped are two annual student-run events that draw thousands of special visitors to campus for fun and friendship.

IDEAL CAMPUS LOCATION SJU’s City Avenue location combines the best of dynamic Philadelphia with the suburban, residential setting of the elegant Main Line. Saint Joseph’s 65 acres span two counties, allowing students to literally enjoy the best of both worlds. The city of Philadelphia, with its tremendous wealth of historical, cultural, social and athletic attractions, is easily accessible, while the safety, serenity and greenery of a suburban campus are right at hand.

The friendly atmosphere and close-knit campus ensure that students don’t get lost in either the literal or the figurative sense at Saint Joseph’s. Expanded library, computer and athletic facilities add a big-time “feel” to this growing university.

SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS Men and women leave Saint Joseph’s prepared. The University boasts an excellent

record of placing its graduates in first-time jobs, professional schools and other advanced degree programs. Part-time work and internships provide real-world experiences, the kind which delight future employers. And with its many diverse student organizations, SJU offers ample opportunities to assume leadership positions.

An extensive on-campus recruitment program provides graduates with a head start in their employment search. Regular meetings with faculty advisors, along with advisory programs in the health professions and in pre-law, assist students who wish to further their schooling.

PHILADELPHIA SJU’s Philadelphia location gives students access to two worlds. The campus resembles a park, surrounded by the stately homes of Philadelphia’s historic Main Line suburbs. Yet students have access to the cultural, commercial and recreational activities of downtown Philadelphia -– only a short ride away. SJU students take frequent advantage of the artistic and cultural resources Philadelphia offers, as well. They visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; the Franklin Institute Science Museum; the Academy of Music, which houses ballet and opera; and the new Kimmel Center, home to the Philadelphia Orchestra. In addition, SJU students enjoy rooting for Philadelphia’s teams in the four major professional sports leagues.
