#DiscoverSummer Program Guide 2016

Friends,

Friends & Families,

Summer is a time for fun, exploring, and growth. At the Boys & Girls Clubs of Skagit County, we have endeavored to bring new, exciting opportunities to our programs that work to engage a wide range of family needs, developmental levels, and ages of youth served. In February, our entire leadership team went to a retreat, specifically to plan and prepare for the best summer possible.

Welcome to #DiscoverSummer! We are so excited to have you join us on this adventure. Club staff put our collective minds together to create a program that is built on our fondest childhood summer memories and experiences. This nostalgic approach isn’t all lemonade, water balloons, and baseball cards in your bicycle spokes; it’s the culmination of intense strategic planning. We will continue our high program standards throughout the summer, providing targeted programing in our three Priority Outcome Areas: Academic Success, Good Character & Citizenship and Healthy Lifestyles.

As I discussed my own vision of a traditional day-camp renaissance in our Clubs, harkening back several decades before television and screen time ruled the day, it was only moments before the brainstorming kicked out a central theme - #DiscoverSummer.

In a world of instant entertainment spent in the great indoors, we’ve worked hard to counter that with programs which drive outdoor adventure, creativity, and fun! There’s something for everyone this summer at the Clubs. We can’t wait to #DiscoverSummer with you!

This year, we invite your member to join us and #DiscoverSummer the Boys & Girls Club way. Whether you enroll just for a week to #DiscoverMotion through our STEM Camps presented by the Shell Corporation, #DiscoverFun when you drop by occasionally in the afternoon for a few hours to play some games and get snack, look to #DiscoverAdventure by diving with Sharks, or #DiscoverEnrichment by attending regularly in our Morning Crew or Summer Brain Gain programs, the Boys & Girls Club is your hub for a safe, fun, and positive place to #DiscoverSummer in Skagit County.

Ready for adventure,

Noah Bannister Director of Operations, Boys & Girls Clubs of Skagit County

Yours in service,

Ron McHenry CEO/Executive Director PHOTO BY JOHN KULL

Club members can participate in all of their favorite activities at the Club from 1 - 6:00 pm (Open until 6:30pm in Sedro-Woolley). The Drop-In Program offers members a fun and safe environment for members to thrive in. Each day, innovative programming will take place throughout the Club, working toward three priority outcomes in participants: Academic Success, Healthy Lifestyles, and Good Character & Citizenship. The Drop-In Program is a great way for members to spend the afternoon during the summer. They’ll get the opportunity for physical activity, educational engagement, and even more importantly, summer fun. Come join us for a Triple Play Daily Challenge, games of dodgeball, kickball, capture the flag, and more! With tournaments, onthe-spot fun, service learning opportunities and specific opportunities for teens.

This summer, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Skagit County will launch an expedition unlike any other before. During the school year, students ages 11+ who participate in our STEM Initiatives have the opportunity to earn points and recognition that translate into a very real ticket that will allow them to #Discover a potential future career, new friendship, hobby, or other life interest while visiting other Boys & Girls Clubs, and Colleges, Universities, Trade Schools, and Vocational Academies in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. The opportunity to #DiscoverFun is always available too, as after all, this is definitely a Boys & Girls Club expedition. To make this STEM Trip just even that much more special, participants will be visiting Yellowstone National Park, gaining an opportunity to see the iconic landscape and points of interest first-hand. Along the way they will be eating, and sleeping at various Boys & Girls Clubs, making new friends and building additional peer support networks in the process. At the core of this exciting adventure is our desire to introduce youth to a variety of different options for post-secondary consideration, working to ensure that their passions align with their education plans, so that each and every one of our members have the greatest opportunity to reach Academic Success. Club members will be selected and invited to participate based on involvement in our STEM Initiatives, STEM activities at their local Clubhouse, as well as how well they have demonstrated leadership and support of their peers through collaboration.

Stem camp Join the Boys & Girls Club this summer in #DiscoverMotion, for a week long adventure to explore the world of science in and around your community. #DiscoverMotion is a hands-on STEM camp that will guide you through the world of motion, how it relates to you, and give you the tools to apply your newfound talents in the field of motion. If you have interests in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics, then this camp is for you.

Burlington School District Annex Building August 1-5

Thanks to a generous donation from Shell Puget Sound Refinery, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Skagit County will be providing a week long STEM Camp, #DiscoverMotion, that will rotate between its Club sites. Each day will start with an exploration into different careers in STEM fields, and then get moving, quite literally, as campers spend a day focused on movement; land, sea, and air. Each day is a new adventure with fresh challenges and innovative solutions, designed for youth ages 9-12.

Contact John Garman, Director of STEM Initiatives with questions and registration information at STEM@skagitclubs.org or 360-419-3723 ext. 4.

The program runs from 9am to 3pm and includes lunch, classroom sessions, and hands-on project time each day. Program cost to participate is $100 per child for the week; if you are already enrolled in Morning Crew that week at your Clubhouse, register with your Club Director for #DiscoverMotion for $25. 21st Century Community Learning Center Summer Program

Five weeks, five themes, five adventures, many opportunities to #DiscoverEnrichment. An extension of the after-school 21st Century programs at Laventure and Mount Baker Middle Schools, this five week summer program will give students the opportunity to dive into some awesome topics, build important collaborative learning practices, and prevent youth from experiencing that summer slide that sets them back academically each year.

From July 5th to August 5th we will be meeting at Laventure Middle School in the mornings and having lunch. After lunch, participants can choose to head over to the Clubhouse, located on the Laventure Campus, and #DiscoverFun. Each week students will get to explore a different theme, ranging from Under the Sea, where they will learn about Ocean life, to Space Community Development, where they’ll explore how humans could create colonies on other planets. We will also be incorporating some popular parts of our normal 21st Century

programs, such as Digital Photography, Triple Play, and Healthy Habits. We’ll be combining fun games, community adventures, and cool projects. The program is free, though enrollment capacity is just 90, so an early enrollment is encouraged. The program is a collaboration between the Boys & Girls Club and Mount Vernon School District, and is aligned to take place in concert with the Mount Vernon Summer School program, also being housed at Laventure Middle School. Transportation to and from the program may be available, and will be announced in May.

Session 4: July 5-15: How It Works

#Discover the inner workings of the things around you. How It Works will take members through 2 weeks of tech-centric fun. The Morning Crew field trip for this session will be a special outing to the Pacific Science Center in Seattle, giving participants a real behind-the-scenes look at how things work.

DISCOVER ADVENTURE: SHARK DIVING BRAIN GAIN: DIG A HOLE

Through partnerships with the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) we are able to provide fresh, nutritious snacks and meals to youth in our Clubs and communities, at no cost to the child. In some communities, we partner with local School Districts and bridge the gap in service, and in others, Boys & Girls Clubs serve as the lead agency. Last summer, across our service area, we served over 33,000 meals and snacks. For the summer of 2016 we plan on expanding our meals program to La Conner and Burlington. We are very excited to provide a meal service to youth in these communities. Site specific meal offerings and service times will be released as we get closer to summer, please check our website and Facebook page for more info in the coming months. We know that our kids have growing bodies, and when we can assist in ensuring they have the fuel they need, our entire community wins. Make sure to stop by a Club or service location to #DiscoverNutrition this summer!

Teen Explorers Camp This summer we are excited to launch the Explorers Camp, a new program designed for youth entering 6th through 9th grade who are looking to engage in some structure-centered fun, and in the process, #DiscoverLeadership. Our program is packed with all of the activity that summer demands and all the stimulation growing brains need, and participating tweens and teens won’t have to spend their whole summer with their faces glued to a screen when they have the Boys & Girls Club offering this fun and unique summer program in both Anacortes and Sedro-Woolley. Explorers Camp will run from 10:00am to 2:30pm each day with specific activities and trips, and then participants can join in for expanded Teen Programs until their local Clubhouse closes in the evening. Those enrolled can come as early as 7:00am and join their younger peers in Morning Crew, volunteer, or spend time in reflection as they enjoy their morning snack. Each week will have games and programs that parallel the Club’s Themes and will be highlighted by inter-Club field trips. Each Wednesday, Anacortes and Sedro-Woolley are going to get together to visit local points of interest, complete service-learning projects, and engage in feats of competition between the respective Clubs.

Building character through activity doesn’t end with games and field trips though. Additional, purposeful programming including Healthy Habits, Money Matters, and Youth for Unity is on the agenda to help prepare our Club kids for the next big step in their lives: Adulthood. The cost to attend Explorers Camp is $100 weekly, with some scholarships available in limited quantity. A minimum enrollment of six youth for each location must occur to run the program, and for this year, a maximum of 13 youth will initially be accepted for each week. Online registration is not available. Please contact your corresponding Clubhouse to register.
