IT’S M AG I C! PRESENTED BY:

2014 ANNUAL GALA

WELCO M E! We are so pleased to present to you our 2014 Gala: IT’S MAGIC! What the Boys & Girls Clubs of Skagit County does in the lives of more than 1,200 youth in our communities isn’t really magic, it’s actually quite purposeful and quantifiable. Just like Mr.’s Copperfield or Houdini, our professional, and highly-trained staff are full of tricks—they work hard each and every day to fulfill our mission: To enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. The product of the realization of that mission isn’t ethereal, it is actually quite measurable. Over the last three years, Boys & Girls Clubs has invested in the National Youth Outcomes Initiative. It’s not enough to know that we cause positive change in the lives of children, we must have the ability to measure that

change, celebrate successes, identify deficiencies and constantly evaluate effectiveness. Not only is this important to demonstrate proper stewardship of the resources provided by our donor-investors, it compels us to constantly evolve to ensure our members reach the highest levels of Academic Success, Healthy Lifestyles, and Good Character & Citizenship. I am so very proud that not only did the Boys & Girls Clubs of Skagit County make improvements in nearly every category from the previous year, in nearly every measurement our organization is surpassing the national average, often by significant margins. These indicators are tested each spring, with our Club members providing the data through online anonymous interactive media systems. In Overall Club Experience, Sense of Belonging, Overall Safety, Emotional Safety, Physical Safety, Fun, Adult Connections, and Staff Expectations we are tops. In only one area, Recognition, do we fall behind the Pacific Region and National scores. It may only be two points, but we can and will

do better to ensure that our youth and teens feel Recognition. There are many other results from our 2014 scores to celebrate as well: None of our teens smoked cigarettes this year; not one. Ninety-nine percent (99%) of our members are on-time to graduate, and volunteerism rates among our teens is 62% higher than the national average. Our Annual Report will feature a more comprehensive look at the data, and we look forward to sharing that with our community, as a results-based testimony to the work accomplished by our staff and volunteers each and every day. Without your support we could not reach these milestones. Your presence tonight demonstrates a commitment to the youth in our communities, and inspires us to constantly reach new levels of achievement in Youth Development. Thank you, -Ron McHenry Executive Director

Each of us must come to care about everyone else's children. We must recognize that the welfare of our children and grandchildren is intimately linked to the welfare of all other people's children. After all, when one of our children needs life-saving surgery, someone else's child will perform it. When our children dial 911, someone else’s child will answer it. When our children need a helping hand, someone else’s child will be there to lend it. If one of our children is threatened or harmed by violence, someone else's child will be responsible for the violent act. The good life for our own children can be secured only if a good life is secured for all other people's children. Mike & Dianne Crawford hold these words to be true & dear to their hearts. LEARN. LIVE. LEAD.

The mission of the Boys & Girls Club has remained largely unchanged since the first Club opened in 1860 in Hartford, CT. From our most humble beginnings, reaching 53 organizations in 1906, the year the Clubs federated into a nationwide movement dedication to youth development, to today when there are more than 4,000 Clubs open throughout the United States and many military facilities around the world. As youth transition into adolescence they naturally search for something. They want help with their identity; they look for people to take them in and share with them their skills and expertise; they want to influence decisions and have a say, and so respond positively when given the opportunity to be a voice; they want to be accepted by a group as a natural human and animalistic response to their development; they want to belong to something that they know has their best interests in mind; they want to naturally make themselves learn more and gain competence; there

are others out there all too happy to provide them with these things; they are called gangs. Our members become part of our extended family, they don’t need a gang. Instead, we harness that energy and produce All-Star Athletes like Shaquille O’Neal and Michael Jordan. Celebrities like Denzel Washington, Jennifer Lopez, Mark Wahlberg, and Kerry Washington. Many, many more Club kids have gone on to be recognized for their call to duty and civic leadership. General Wesley Clark was a Club kid before he was Supreme Commander European NATO Forces. In 1953 a young man walked into a Boys & Girls Club in Hope, Arkansas. Forty years later he would be inaugurated as the President of the United States of America. President William Jefferson Clinton is the first Club kid to reach that achievement, and we know he won’t be the last. OUR VALUES In the spring of 2014, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Skagit County went on a jour-

ney to explore what the values of the organization were, an important task that can help determine how a mission is realized. The process started with our Board of Directors and continued on with our Staff. At the end of eight weeks we had our values. These are the traits and characteristics that not only do we wish to operate with, as a staff and Board of Directors, but we want our youth to reflect these values in their lives. Through modeling these actions, and reinforcing the concepts through Targeted Programs and Activities, we engage another generation in values that can be attributed to growing strong individuals and communities. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Skagit County are a mission-driven, data-informed organization that is proud to hold dear the values of Fun, Respect, Integrity, Community, and Acceptance. OUR OUTCOMES We have three Priority Outcomes we strive for each of our members to achieve during their membership: Ac-

ademic Success, Healthy Lifestyles, and Good Character & Citizenship. Our objective is to have our teens not only graduate from high school on-time, but have a specific plan for the future that results in either a post-secondary education, apprenticeship in a trade or enrollment in a trade school, commitment to the Armed Forces, or possess the requisite skills to enter full-time employment in a family-wage position. No matter how you phrase it, we want our youth to Learn.

OUR COMMITMENT TO YOU

Our Commitment to our Donor-Investors The Boys & Girls Clubs of Skagit County is committed to intentional best practices in non-profit governance, and the Board of Directors, in its role as community stewards, takes this commitment to heart. It is only through a transparent and ethical relationship between our donor-investors, our membership, our staff, and all of Skagit County that we can fulfill this commitment and implement our mission: To enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. Through their Duty of Care, our Board of Directors, acting as trustees of resources invested in the Boys & Girls Clubs of Skagit County, uses diligence, care, and skill which prudent people would use in similar circumstances. They are familiar with the organizations’ finances and activities, and participate in its governance. As such, finances are reviewed monthly in-depth by a Finance Committee. This review includes monitoring any Journal Entries, line item comparison of monthly and year-to-date budget versus actual, monitoring of the Balance Sheet, and a summary of six-week Cash Flow statement with corresponding accounts payables listed. This is supported by a secondary review of finances by the Board of Directors in its’ entirety that includes a classification comparison of monthly and year-to-date budget versus actual, Cash Flow Statement and Balance Sheet. The Treasurer receives a complete General Ledger for substantiation, and a second signature is required on all checks, with supporting documentation attached for approval.

Each year, as required for membership in Boys & Girls Clubs of America, a full audit is conducted which includes a rigorous risk assessment of accounting and financial reporting systems. Once again in 2014, this resulted in an unqualified, or clean, opinion on our 2013 financial statements. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Skagit County is happy to make available to any member of the public a copy of our financial statements for review. The Form 990 filing for the organization can be found on guidestar.org. There you can review the last three most current Form 990’s. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Skagit County has made a goal of increasing our transparency by posting all recent Form 990’s, audited Financial Statements and annual Budgets on our website, www.skagitclubs.org, by January 31, 2015. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Skagit County maintains a strong, layered, Segregation of Duties for financial controls that ensures no less than four individuals are involved in any single transaction. This process includes an individual to Input the transaction in a timely manner, a separate individual to Review the transaction for mistakes, errors or fraud, another person to Approve the transaction, and finally one last individual to Substantiate the transaction to ensure it is utilized as intended in the carrying out of the mission for the organization. Any and all documents referenced are available for review at the Administrative Office for the Clubs, located at 1605 William Way, Suite B, in Mount Vernon, or can be requested via email at rmchenry@skagitclubs.org or by calling us at 360-419-3723.
