be removed without affecting the solidity of the structure. A load-bearing wall can be removed, but it will take more time and money. Check with your municipality to find out if a permit is required for this type of renovation before starting any demolition work.

2. Optimize storage

To help increase available space in your home, go through every room and decide what could be stored more efficiently. Could all those pairs of shoes lying around on your floor be kept on a shoe rack in the closet? Could the DVDs that are gathering dust in your living room be stored in the garage or the attic?

1. Knock down some walls

It is normal to feel a little cramped in a house where all the rooms are enclosed. Having lots of walls creates a barrier, both visually and in terms of movement. For these reasons, many architects and designers favor open floor plans. If this idea appeals to you, you could ask a couple of renovation professionals to inspect your home and identify which walls can

Backsplashes that enhance a kitchen

W

here home decorating is concerned, the space between your countertop and your cabinets is the perfect place to express your personality. Backsplashes are more popular than ever and are elements that can transform the look of the most important room in your home.

1. Brick

A brick backsplash gives an instant traditional, Europeaninspired cachet to your decor. The installation requires a layer of cement, or mortar, and the kind you use may differ depending on the material the wall is made of. Ask an expert about how to proceed.

2. Hardwood

Hardwood gives a warm, Zen touch to any decor. However, this material must be suitably waterproofed when used as a backsplash so it doesn’t get damaged by the inevitable splashes. 8

3. Decorative tiles

Stores stock decorative tiles in a wide variety of sizes, styles and colors. With geometric patterns, glass and ceramic imitations, there’s something for everyone. If you have a limited budget and aren’t very handy, self-adhesive wall tiles are easy to install and give a nice effect at a reasonable price.

4. Wallpaper and glass

Hang some gorgeous wallpaper and then have professionals cover it with a glass panel to create an eye-catching backsplash. The made-to-measure glass panel will protect your wallpaper while providing a beautiful, transparent finish. Compliments are guaranteed.

Tips for installing crown moldings

C

rown moldings are a beautiful addition to any room, but require patience, know-how and skill to install. Ready to try? The following tips could prove useful.

Your tools

Once you’ve purchased enough crown molding for the dimensions of your room—allowing yourself an additional section of at least 8 feet for test cuts—gather together the following items: miter saw, template, hammer, finishing nails, wood glue, latex caulking and a pencil.

Cut

Crown moldings have to be cut at a 45-degree angle if they are to fit properly in right angle joints. To avoid costly mistakes, do a trial run on the portion of molding you bought for this purpose. Pressing firmly, stabilize the crown molding on the template and 10

cut it with the miter saw. After placing the test moldings in a corner and making sure the joint is to your satisfaction, draw some reference points with your pencil.

Glue

Once all your final moldings are cut, ask a volunteer to help you install them. Start by spreading wood glue over the entire surface of the back of the crown molding before applying it to the wall. Then hammer in the finishing nails approximately every 12 inches. After joining the moldings in the right angles, wipe off any excess glue with a damp cloth. Lastly, before painting your crown moldings, fill the nail holes and cracks with the latex caulking and allow to dry.

I

s your wood floor scratched? Is one of your favorite pieces of furniture stained? Fortunately, you can make them look like new (or at least limit the damage) by trying these tips.

Scratches

If your beautiful hardwood floor is looking ruined by a scratch, gather up the following items: baking soda, a small brush and some floor varnish. First, clean the scratch with water and baking soda, then rinse and let dry. Then apply three coats of varnish to fill the scratch.

White heat stains

A hot dish was put directly on your varnished wood table and now it’s “decorated” with an ugly white stain? Don’t panic. Try to get rid of it by rubbing it with one of the following mixtures:

•One part turpentine to two parts linseed oil •A paste made of olive oil and salt •A paste made of olive oil and wood ash

TIP: Use a fresh lemon to get rid of ink stains on a wood floor or piece of furniture.

Ink stains

A bottle of ink was spilled or a pen leaked on a favorite piece of wood furniture? Move quickly! Cut a lemon in half, rub the stain with it and then wipe the wood with a damp cloth. Alternatively, spray the ink stain with hair spray and blot it with a paper towel. If stains and scratches are deep and indelible, the item will have to be sanded completely and a new coat of varnish applied. For the best results, call a professional.

Flooring for every room

T

he possibilities for home flooring are pretty bountiful when it comes to materials and looks. If you like natural materials, there are many very durable choices; inversely, if you’re on a budget and prefer synthetic materials, it’s quite possible to achieve a natural look. In the bathroom, it’s essential to install flooring that won’t be damaged by water and dampness. Conventional ceramic tiles and vinyl flooring are wise choices. The new laminate floorings, which are moisture resistant, can also be used successfully. The kitchen has its own special requirements as well; the flooring should be easy to clean and able to handle a lot of heavy traffic. You might want to look at ceramic tiles, 14

vinyl, laminate, as well as solid hardwood or engineered hardwood. The latter is available in a variety of styles and blends well with any type of backsplash. Lots of people still love the comfort of wall-to-wall carpeting in the bedroom, and others prefer a bare floor that’s more hypoallergenic. For those folks, functional and solid hardwood and engineered hardwood give a stylish, modern look. Laminate flooring is also an affordable solution that can be jazzed up with tasteful area rugs. In the living room, style and comfort compete for first prize. Fitted carpets still occupy a place of honor, as does solid hardwood flooring, which is both timeless and elegant. Other good choices include HOME style & Garden 2016

engineered hardwood and laminate flooring, which, with a few rugs, add class to any decor. A dining room floor requires a material that offers both stain resistance and warmth. Wood, laminate and vinyl flooring all meet these requirements. If you feel you must absolutely have a carpet under the table, avoid pale shades. You can counter the effects of dampness and cold in the basement by making sure that the subfloor is well insulated before you install the flooring of your choice.

TRANSFORM YOUR KITCHEN WITHOUT AN EXPENSIVE REMODEL If you walk into your kitchen, look around, and feel overwhelmed by the clutter and disorganization, you’re not alone. Millions of people feel the same thing in their homes and, the truth is, it’s due to a lack of useable space. One solution to the problem of a cluttered or disorganized kitchen is to install pullout shelves. There are many advantages to installing pull-out shelves in your space, including the fact that pull-out shelves are cost-effective. Rather than invest in an expensive remodel, pull-out shelves can help give you the accessibility you need— on a budget you want. Here are other benefits to installing pull-out shelves in your home: Keep your existing cabinets. Pull-out shelves give you increased storage and organization—all without having to change your existing cabinets. In other words, you get the benefit of increased accessibility without the headache of a full kitchen remodel. Strength. Some shelves can hold items up to 100 lbs.! Just imagine filling a shelf with heavier items such as blenders, mixers, and more. While you’re at it, imagine how wonderful it will feel when you have a place for these items—and they don’t have to take up valuable counter or pantry space. Improved efficiency. When you can’t find what you’re looking for in your kitchen, you spend a lot of time searching and very little time cooking. Pull-out shelves help you maximize productivity by putting everything you need at your fingertips. Recapture space. A common complaint among homeowners is that they’re losing space in their cabinets based on the position of the shelves in that cabinet. Because of their unique design, pull-out shelves help you recapture those areas— helping you make the most of your space. As you can see, the advantages of pull-out shelves are numerous. It’s no surprise that so many people are turning to this unique solution to reclaim their kitchens, not to mention their pantry, bathrooms, and other spaces. Now, visualize your own kitchen—and your own pain points—and imagine the joy you could experience with pull-out shelving solutions in your home.

A Zen garden

is all about simplicity: stone, wood, gravel and sand alongside dark green vegetation, all of it meandering and gentle. Are you dreaming of an intimate backyard in which to meditate and be at one with nature? A Zen garden is for you. But even if such a garden exudes simplicity and natural lines, nothing should be left to chance. Creating a Zen garden requires looking at the space as though it were a living picture. Existing elements must be taken into account when transforming your yard. For example, you can add stones to the lawn to create paths that wander from the shade of a tree to a meditation bench, or to a pebbled dry garden that’s dedicated to the contemplation of a statue.

Water is essential in a Zen garden; it represents rebirth, peace and enchantment. So, whatever the size of your garden, think about installing an arrangement where water can trickle or circulate. A lily pond, waterfall or even a fountain will do. The vegetation should be dominated by shrubs and foliage plants. Flowers are present but always discrete; you’ll need light touches of yellow, orange or white scattered here and there— nothing complicated, nothing flashy. One exception is the use of fall chrysanthemums. With their abundant flowers, skillfully placed fall chrysanthemums add incomparable splendor to a Zen garden. Lastly, don’t forget to hang a few lanterns to diffuse some soft amber light after sunset.

Gardening without breaking the bank

G

enerally speaking, gardening is an inexpensive activity, requiring only a minimum of equipment. However, when gardeners start to roam the big box stores and garden centers looking for inspiration, they can easily become horrified at the thought of having to purchase dozens of different products. But gardeners don’t need every available gardening tool. A few quality tools are sufficient for taking care of your flowerbeds or vegetable gardens. A healthy garden is a garden that costs less money. Why? Problems rarely arise if you choose plants adapted to your area. They’ll be naturally more resistant and will know how to protect themselves from pest infestations. Gardeners also need to learn to accept the presence of insects, which, in many cases, do not harm plants. If necessary, there are lots of household remedies. For example, in the event of an aphid invasion, instead of buying a commercial pesticide, you can spray the affected plant with a jet of water from the garden hose or prepare a decoction of rhubarb leaves. Trading is another good way to • Grows healthier, bigger plants • Holds water, reduces runoff save money; it is also a cherished • Builds healthy soil • Is a local, sustainable product practice among gardeners, • Replaces chemical fertilizers • Special bulk rate for farmers! wherein neighbors might Come by our public retail yard to pickup your landscaping and gardening materials exchange some peony tubers for 360-629-2933 • www.lenz-enterprises.com a few prized heirloom tomato 5210 SR 532 • Stanwood • Mon-Fri 8am to 5pm • Sat 8am to 3pm seeds. ou don’t have to own a huge backyard in order to grow potted plants. A balcony, patio, deck, window ledge, or even a flight of stairs are great spots for all sizes and shapes of pots.

in a flower bed. And using containers allows gardeners to create different landscape features from year to year, or even within a single season.

But before you go on a shopping spree, remember that plants prefer large, deep pots in which their roots can develop properly. The size of the pot required depends on the size of the plant. A reasonably tall plant, such as some kinds of grasses, needs a larger pot than a geranium, for example. It’s all a question of balance. Plants grown in pots are more vulnerable to temperature variations and drought than those planted in the ground. Because of water evaporation, the temperature of the earth in a pot is higher than the air temperature, which means watering is particularly important during hot weather. Wind is another factor to be considered. Position your pots where structures or hedges protect them from strong winds, especially those coming from the north. Drafty places should also be avoided.

re you feeling the urge to grow your own vegetables now that spring is here? What a great idea. Planting your own garden is a rewarding activity that will not only save you money but will also provide you with vegetables overflowing with goodness and flavor. Organizing your first vegetable garden requires a little planning. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sun per day and is sheltered from the wind. Make sure you have a source of water nearby. The size of the garden should be in proportion to what you want to plant. A tip: Don’t go overboard during the first year. Try your hand at a small vegetable garden to start with, because you’ll need to devote some time to this activity. A vegetable garden measuring 8 square feet will require about 45 minutes per week of maintenance work.

There are four essential steps to preparing the ground: weeding, turning the soil, aerating and adding compost and a natural fertilizer. Wait until the ground has dried out so as not to end up with soil that is compact and difficult to work with. Although it may seem tedious, preparing the soil is of paramount importance; the lighter and looser the soil, the better your chances of success. Wait until all risk of ground frost has passed before you plant anything. By the way, there’s one thing you can be sure of: your patience will be fully rewarded when the time comes to harvest your crop.

Strengthening your lawn is a good place to start and will stack the odds in your favor. A healthy lawn is denser, so there’s less room for weeds to grow. To improve the health of your lawn, mow it to a height of 2 or 3 inches. Leave the grass cuttings right on the lawn. Water less often but more thoroughly. Reseed sparse areas and, if necessary, replace the grass with another type of ground cover in areas where there’s still fierce competition between weeds and grass. You may also find it useful to buy a test kit to determine the acidity of your soil. Grass that grows in soil that is too acidic won’t be as strong. You can help by neutralizing the acidity, sometimes by just adding compost. Be patient and don’t get discouraged. While you’re waiting for the results of all your hard work to show, feel free to use a weed-removing tool to uproot recalcitrant plants. But whatever you do, try to be a good citizen and resist the urge to use products that are harmful to the environment.

ust about everyone would agree that herbs give pleasure to the taste buds, the nose and even the eyes. If you’re thinking about starting an herb garden, don’t make the mistake of growing lots of different varieties. In the beginning, choose just a few herbs that you like and will use. Interesting choices include the classics: parsley, basil, thyme, chives, sage, tarragon and rosemary. When buying your herbs, be sure to gently rub their leaves together in order to smell their fragrance. This is the best way to decide if you like their scent. Once you’ve mastered growing these simpler varieties, you can add a few more exotic herbs that can be used for specific recipes. Luckily, herbs do not require a lot

of care. Planting them in a sunny spot and not overwatering them is usually enough to get healthy plants. Because herbs usually have very distinct fragrances, they are rarely attacked by insects. They’re even used in vegetable plots to repel harmful parasites! Herbs are also great for growing in containers on a deck. The end result will be as good as if they’d been grown directly in the ground. Don’t be afraid to pinch back new shoots in order to encourage growth and density of leaves. In most cases this also keeps the plant from flowering and going to seed, which will make it taste bitter. When the time comes to harvest your crop, don’t mix different herbs in the same basket or else their distinctive fragrances will meld. Try to harvest herbs on a dry day, because wet or moist herbs are inclined to rot or take longer to dry and conserve.
