With the unpredictability of the weather, the full 30 days means that the tulips have a greater chance of blooming during the festival. The 2016 Tulip Festival will run from April 1-30. Tulipfestival.org has a wide range of information to help you navigate the festival including a calendar of events, maps and places to stay. The festival has also grown in
scope; there are at least 26 Tulip Festival sanctioned events and activities happening throughout the Skagit Valley and can be found at the calendar of events on tulipfestival.org. The events are spread throughout the valley in cities from Sedro-Woolley to Anacortes, Mount-Vernon, Burlington and La Conner. Many events are fundraisers for local charities including the Kiwanis Salmon Barbecue (April 2nd through 24th from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily at Mount Vernon’s Hillcrest Lodge). Don’t miss other signature events such as the Anacortes Arts Festival at the Depot Arts Center (April 15th at 6 p.m., April 16th through 23rd from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.); The Anacortes Spring Wine Festival at the Port of Anacortes Transit Shed Event Center (April 9th from noon to 4:30 p.m.); and the Kids Giant Garage Sale at the

You will be able to order bulbs, buy cut flowers and mementos, and take photos. Pets are not allowed in the gardens. Weekends tend to be very busy; arrive before 10 a.m. to beat the crowds. The festival is a driving tour, with events miles apart. The map shows locations, but is not to scale. Tulip crops rotate, so you will need a new map each year. Sandy Haight, Poster Artist
2016 Official Poster Unique to the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival, each year a committee of community volunteers selects an artist to create the official Tulip Festival poster. Local artists submit their applications and the winner is free to choose their medium and style in a way that will interpret their vision of the festival and the tulips of Skagit Valley. Sponsored by Heritage Bank, Seattle artist Sandy Haight was selected as the 2016 Tulip Festival 6
poster artist in August, 2014. The poster, which was revealed in November, 2015, is a vivid watercolor featuring a luminous painting technique. “Sandy’s painting is fresh, bright and colorful,” noted Skagit Valley Tulip Festival Executive Director, Cindy Verge. “It is a huge honor to be chosen as a poster artist for the festival,” commented Haight. “The intense colors and sensuality of tulips 2016 Skagit Valley Tulip Festival
continues to astonish me. The 2016 poster is an opportunity to celebrate my interest in painting the beauty of flowers.” Sandy has been painting the inner landscape of flowers for the last few years; she calls these works Floralscapes. Her focus on flowers in watercolor made her a perfect candidate to be selected as the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival poster artist. Haight’s exploration of various subjects and representational watercolor techniques brought a selfrealization that immersing into the shapes, designs and patterns inside flowers and plant life on a macro level was the subject that awakened her love of painting and gave her a chance to create a series of images of stunning beauty. Showing her paintings in the Northwest Watercolor Society’s juried shows qualified her to become a Signature Member in 2012; she is now entitled to use their initials on her Floralscape paintings. Sandy Haight was born in Seattle, raised on the East Coast, and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts in drawing and painting from the University of Colorado. After graduation, she moved to California and started her family along with a freelance career as an illustrator of educational materials and selfpublished cookbooks. At a life drawing session she was introduced to watercolor and was hooked. She moved back to Seattle 31 years ago and practiced using the medium to build a new illustration portfolio through classes at the School of Visual Concepts. Use of watercolor in her illustration work became part of her signature style. To be more widely marketable and contemporary, her illustration technique departed from the realism she had worked hard to master as a student into a more simplified, bolder look. Now as goskagit.com
an illustration and watercolor teacher at Bellevue College, she’s rediscovering the joys of building a nuanced painting, rich with built up color and texture as she launches her students into the same process of art making. Upon seeing the fun results of an assignment she gave to create artwork for the Tulip Festival poster, she decided to submit to the festival herself. After years of “drawing with a brush” in her illustration work, Sandy Haight took on the study of sumi painting with its challenges of simplicity, controlled tones, brush loading and expressing qi energy on traditional subjects in nature. “I’m still feeling my way and love it when the simplest line can reflect an emotional gesture.” Both her watercolor and sumi life drawings have been shown in and around Seattle with their unique and refreshing approach to the figure.
Some can be seen on her fine art website, sandyhaightfineart.com and purchased through her Etsy.com store. In addition to teaching and creating fine art, Haight works as a professional illustrator; providing art pieces used in many different types of publications including book jackets, advertising, packaging and logos. Jody Bergsma of Bergsma Gallery will work with Haight to transform her painting into the Tulip Festival poster. Bergsma will also be designing official apparel and many other products using the poster art. Meet the Artist Sandy will be available to meet and sign posters on Saturdays and Sundays in April from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.: RoozenGaarde, 15867 Beaver Marsh Road, Mount Vernon on April 2, 10, 16, 24; and Tulip Town, 15002 Bradshaw Road, Mount Vernon on April 3, 9, 17, 23.
Prints of Sandy’s Floralscape paintings and the official poster will be available at Tulip Town and RoozenGaarde Gift shop during the festival. During the month of April Sandy will also be exhibiting original paintings of her Floralscapes at Scott Milo Gallery in Anacortes. Come to the reception on April 1st from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. during the Anacortes Art Walk. Tulip Festival Suppliers New Festival Merchandiser Artist Jody Bergsma of Bellingham is the new official supplier for Tulip Festival Merchandising; taking over in the summer of 2015. In her role, Jody is developing and designing all official festival merchandise for the 2016 festival. Jody has a company in Bellingham where all the products are created. In addition to the traditional merchandise such as posters, cards, magnets and mugs Jody is also producing color books, fleece blankets, multiple garments, glass coaster sets, Christmas

ornaments, journals, key chains, mini matted prints; and more. Her team was also able to take eight of the top favorite posters from past years and re-scan them, which means an opportunity to create new products using those posters, too. Says Jody, “I was always attracted to this momentous spring event…such a remarkable display of color…many may not know that the soil in Skagit County is some of the most fertile ground in the United States.” Born in Lynden with Dutch heritage, Jody used to visit the beautiful tulip fields in Skagit County as a child. She loved to bring her children there in the 1980s and to take pictures in the fields. Bergsma applied to be the official poster artist and in so doing did a lot of research on the Skagit Valley and the festival. When she made her presentation she showed the panel all the products she was already creating for two other Tulip Festivals in Holland,
2016 Skagit Valley Tulip Festival
Michigan and Portland, Oregon for the last several years. The panel was impressed and with the current merchandiser retiring, executive director Cindy was excited to hire Jody to bring fresh, new products to the mix. Jody is a well-known Bellingham watercolor painter; she has a diverse painting style that has developed over many years and literally thousands of paintings. Tulip Suppliers The tulips are spread throughout the Skagit Valley in rotating fields a few miles apart so you will want to take a driving tour to see them all. The 2016 season will be early, so it is advised to plan your visits Easter weekend, through the third week of April. Most of the tulip bulbs are provided by RoozenGaarde/ Washington Bulb Co., Inc. and Tulip Town. Both RoozenGaarde and Tulip Town have displays of tulips in their show gardens and carry deep roots in tulip growing

Tulip Festival Street Fair
Welcome to the 32nd Annual Downtown Mount Vernon Tulip Festival Street Fair! We love the opportunity this event provides to showcase our traditional American Main Street. Whether you are visiting for the first time, or returning as part of a yearly tradition, you are in for a treat! This year the event is better than ever, with new artisans joining us and long-time favorites returning, as well. Our downtown businesses, new and old, invite you to step inside and see all that they have to offer. The Mount Vernon Downtown Association is proud to produce this event, which has become known as the first annual outdoor arts show of the year in Washington, and is one of the largest, as well. This year, the Street Fair includes over 140 artisan vendors, 15 different food vendors, and 3 days of live entertainment in multiple locations throughout the street. Our artists hail from 6 different states and British Columbia this year, and nearly 20% of them are new. We are thrilled to point out that we have several vendors, such as King’s Kettle Korn and Ace Leather, who have been coming to the street fair since 12
Mount Vernon Downtown Association
its very first years. You will find a wide variety of handmade items and art this year, from wearable art and jewelry for your person, to handcrafted furniture, art and sculpture for your home and garden. With plenty of kid-friendly artisans and performers scattered throughout the Street Fair, there is lots to enjoy for the younger visitors as well. Check out our new “Art in Action” area in Pine Square, where you can watch artisans creating their wares. Once again, we are excited to incorporate our recently completed Riverfront Plaza Park in the event. It is located one block west of South 1st Street, between Myrtle and Gates Street on the gorgeous Skagit River. The addition of the landmark Tulip Dance sculpture, and thousands of donated tulips from DeGoede Bulb Farm have helped turn this new gathering place into a stunning backdrop for our main entertainment stage. There is plenty of room to enjoy fabulous live music and yummy food, while feasting your eyes on the lifeblood of the Skagit Valley, the Skagit River. There is lots of seating and room for dancing. While you are up there, check out the Skagit Riverwalk Promenade, which currently stretches from Lions Park north of downtown, to the intersection of Kincaid and Main Street. This lovely new addition
2016 Skagit Valley Tulip Festival
to downtown is part of Phase II of the Flood Wall Protection Project. Construction has begun on the third and final Phase of the project, and should be concluded in 2017. Once done, the Riverwalk trail will stretch further south of town along the river, and will be approximately 2 miles long, with parking at either end. Come on back and walk its length, or bring your bicycles, strollers, tricycles, roller blades and little red wagons! The Downtown Mount Vernon Tulip Festival Street Fair serves to do more than attract thousands of visitors to our Main Street district to welcome spring. The Street Fair is the primary fundraiser for the Mount Vernon Downtown Association. The mission of the MVDA is to promote a vibrant and prosperous downtown through celebrating our historic character. As a mission-driven organization, we work to serve the interests of all of the businesses located within our geographically-defined district. We seek to coordinate efforts to recruit and retain businesses, and strive always to preserve and enhance the historical, cultural and architectural features that make our community unique. Best of Show The Tulip Festival Street Fair is a juried arts and crafts event. All artisans are required to submit applications which include photographs and descriptions of their work, a resume of other shows in which they have participated, and raw material receipts as verification of handmade status. Since 2013, we have been taking the jurying process one step further and awarding “Best of Show” recognition in various categories. During late Friday and early Saturday of the show, a mystery juror or two wander the street in search of likely candidates. These judges are professional artists in their own right, and are not participants in the street fair, to avoid any conflict of interest. We want to recognize the best of the best who attend our event. This year, we are adding a new category: People’s Choice Award. Vote for your favorite vendor at the Mount Vernon Downtown Association information booth in front of Gretchens Kitchen Store.

Washington Bulb Company/ RoozenGaarde Flowers & Bulbs RoozenGaarde gardens are open to tours year round, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays. Spring admission is $5 per person and free for those aged 5 and under. The garden is re-designed every year with new types, patterns and colors of flowers. Parking is free: RoozenGaarde parking is on Beaver Marsh Road. There is also official pay parking operated by RoozenGaarde by the tulip fields. Parking in official pay lots is included with a paid RoozenGaarde admission (show your ticket stub) OR if you park in an Official PAY lot, the ticket stub is good for one admission to RoozenGaarde. Admission/parking must all occur on the same day. Says Brent Roozen, “Spring is
always an exciting time for us…we look forward to it every year as do many here in the Pacific Northwest. It’s always worth coming to check out the flowers, whether it’s your first time or your tenth.” RoozenGaarde History Washington Bulb Company was purchased by William Roozen in 1955 from two of the areas original bulb growers. He had emigrated from Holland in 1947 with years of tulip bulb experience and dreams of growing a flourishing bulb business in America. William’s skills were a family tradition; the Roozens had been tulip farmers for at least six generations dating back to the 1700s. Today the company is the largest tulip-bulb grower in the country, one of the largest employers in the Skagit Valley, and the largest supplier of bulbs for the Tulip Festival. They farm about 2,000 acres of land including other crops such as daffodils, iris and
wheat. The company ships over 70 million cut flowers and tens of millions of bulbs every year. In 1985, William Roozen handed the business down to his five sons and a daughter, who passed away in 1996. William Roozen passed away on July 13, 2002 with five sons and 35 grandchildren to keep the business in the family. His five sons are the company principles today. While about half of the business is in fresh cut flowers, the company also sells a great selection of tulip bulbs, daffodil bulbs, iris bulbs, hyacinth bulbs, and other specialty flower bulbs for spring blooming. Customers can place bulb orders from February to December for the biggest and best flower bulbs available anywhere in the world - including Holland. The mild maritime climate of the Skagit Valley combined with its rich topsoil allows bulbs an extended growing season to mature and

grow to large sizes. Come visit our display gardens to see for yourself. After the fields of flowers have been topped, the bulbs are allowed to mature and multiply, and are then harvested. Tulips.com then selects the largest bulbs from each year’s crop so you can grow the same beautiful tulips, daffodils, and iris in your own home gardens. Please visit tulips.com for more company information and to place bulb orders. Tulip Town The second largest tulip supplier, Tulip Town, is owned and operated by longtime Skagit Valley Tulip growers Tom and Jeannette DeGoede. The 2016 show gardens will be open to the public on March 26th through the end of April (depending on how long the blooms last) from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
daily. Admission is $6 per person, cash only. Children 5 and under are free. Trolley rides will start the 26th of March. Tulip Town will offer beautiful tulip pots (small $5, large $8) for Easter Sunday and all of April. Parking is free: Tulip Town parking is on Bradshaw Road, adjoining the fields and indoor flower show. There have been many updates to the farm and its gardens to make 2016 viewing fresh and exciting. Changes include an outdoor tulip test trial garden with bulbs sent by family of the DeGoedes in Holland; tulips that do well in Holland may not necessarily hold up in the Pacific Northwest climate and soil. In the Fall of 2015 a new ceiling was installed for the indoor flower and garden show building because the green house shade cloth was not fire retardant. Following
that, an impressive new entrance standing 12 feet high was erected in winter 2015/2016. The entrance is made out of wood with 8 foot by 4 foot pictures designed to look like windows. Now the customers can view what Tulip Town offers in their facility. There are two paintings: one of the trolley and one of tulips, both by artist Jennifer Bowen, and a photo of the indoor flower and garden show by Peter Cherry. In January 2016, solar panels were installed on the main warehouse roof. Says Jeannette, “we wanted to do our part for the environment and installed the panels because we believe it’s a good thing to do…the new entrance is beautiful and along with some new mural paintings inside the show, there have been many great changes.”

Tulip Town History Tom DeGoede, owner of the Skagit Valley Bulb Farm / Tulip Town, emigrated from Holland to Canada in 1956; moving to Mount Vernon in 1957 where he joined his brothers Henry and John. He managed the Neal Noorlag Bulb Farm until 1983, and then purchased his business, now known as ‘Lil Tulip Town. They sold the first official Skagit Valley tulips to the public with a borrowed strawberry stand. More and more people took notice of their flowers and began driving from Seattle and beyond to walk the fields and buy the colorful blooms. As traffic grew, law enforcement gave them a push to build a parking lot. A 500 car parking lot full of agriculture was built on the farm; espalier apple, pear, and cherry trees serve as car dividers. The DeGoede’s have four
grown children, five grand-children and four great-grandchildren; many of whom participate in Tulip Town.

Economic Boost to County The local tourism industry looks forward to the month of April with crowds of 250,000 to 400,000 coming to see the flowers each year. Skagit county business owners sometimes refer to the accompanying economic boost as “Christmas in April”; cross-promotion is common as local businesses and organizations use the festival’s draw to attract people to their events. Visitors will find businesses welcoming and appreciative of
their business. Tulip Festival tourist spending was estimated at $14 million dollars in 2000 and the festival has grown every year since. People from around the world come to look at the tulip fields but they often end up staying and doing other activities in the area. Visitors will find comfortable lodging, restaurants for every taste, and shopping opportunities around the county. With extra people comes lots of additional traffic. In the last several years, road work has been completed which has helped traffic flow during the festival and throughout the year. Roundabouts were built at the intersections of McLean road and Best Road and Fir Island
Road and Pioneer Highway to keep traffic moving. Festival attendees have started to make better use of Highway 20 off exit 230 in Burlington and other side roads. This has led to increased economic activity for businesses along those corridors, easier access to the tulip fields and decreased traffic congestion on main roads. The busiest times are sunny weekend days but many people come on weekdays instead to avoid the crowds. Data reports on both sales tax and lodging tax collections for monies generated in March and April point to a successful 2015 Tulip Festival. The following data was obtained from the Washington State Department of Revenue. Note: April monies

2016 Youth Ambassadors In a tradition leading back almost to the beginning of the Tulip Festival, two official Youth Ambassadors are chosen each February by a five-panel judging team from the Skagit Valley Herald. The Tulip Festival organization works to make the try-outs a special occasion for the kids. “We see it as way for us to give back to our community,” said Tulip Festival Executive Director, Cindy Verge. The event typically attracts about 60 local school-aged applicants and is held at the Cascade Mall. This year’s try-outs were held the evening of Tuesday, February 9th. Each student is asked two questions; the standard question is why he

or she would like to be an ambassador and a surprise question such as what they would like to be when they grow up or what is their favorite movie. To encourage kids to audition, Cindy Verge and her Tulip Festival team make presentations to 800 plus children at local schools. The event started out as a “Little Miss Tulip” contest but is now open to all children currently attending 4th or 5th grade in a Skagit County based school. Youth Ambassadors are given a variety of tasks including greeting visitors at the annual PACCAR Technical Center open house (April 9th from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.), appearing at local radio stations, riding in the start of the La Conner US Bank Parade (April 9th at 2 p.m.), meeting the governor, and attending the Tulip Festival Gala (March 24th from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.). Overall, this is a great opportunity for students to get involved in their community and share their pride with visitors. The ambassadors will represent the Skagit Valley and the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival for an entire year.
2016 Youth Ambassadors Eleven-year-old Paige Whited, a fifth-grader from Bow’s Allen Elementary School, was selected along with Jack Rinker, a fifth-grader at Immaculate Conception Regional School in Mount Vernon. Paige’s first day as the 2016 ambassador was also her 11th birthday. “I decided to take a chance by going up there and doing it,” she said, obviously glad she took the chance. Jack is also excited about being selected. “You get to be around the tulips, go in the fields and look at all the beautiful colors,” he said. “It’s like a rainbow out there.” He is also looking forward to meeting the governor as he has “…heard good things about meeting the governor.” “They’re quality kids that win and they’re really proud of their county and their festival,” Verge said. Julie Whited said being a Tulip Ambassador is a great opportunity for her daughter, who has Asperger’s syndrome. “I think she is going to continue to grow her self-confidence… learning more and more about her community and her state.”
