Directions: From I-5, Exit 230, go 40 miles east on Hwy. 20. Just past milepost 100 (3 mi. east of Rockport) watch for Cascadian Farm’s Roadside Stand on your left. Farm premises: Cascadian Farm is one of the country’s leading brands of organic food. The story of Cascadian Farm begins over 40 years ago on a little stretch of
land next to the Skagit River in the foothills of the Northern Cascades. Our original farm is a 28 acre organic farm where we grow blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, sweet corn, and pumpkins. Our roadside stand serves farm grown organic produce, homemade organic ice cream, berry shortcake, snacks, and espresso. Enjoy a picnic near our flower garden with views of the river and glacier covered mountains. Learn about our ecological approach to farming and experience how we work with nature to grow our crops. The scenic drive alone is well worth the trip! ~FREE~Festival activities: • Hayride tour • Equipment alley • Pumpkin painting • Self-guided walking tours ~PAY~Festival activities: • Scarecrow making • U-pick pumpkin patch Learn while touring these
premises: Learn about the history of Cascadian Farm, organic agriculture practices, and about native pollinators and how we attract them to live on the farm. Food ($): Organic homemade ice cream, espresso, sandwiches, snacks, and more. Retail ($): Organic snacks, pumpkins, frozen berries, and souvenirs. Farm History: The story of Cascadian Farm begins with the story of our founder, Gene Kahn. Over 40 years ago, Gene was an idealistic 24-year-old grad-school dropout who wanted to make a difference in the world. He recognized the delicate balance between nature and humans. Inspired by reading “Silent Spring” and “Diet for a Small Planet,” Gene wanted to get back to the land and farm in a way that would not harm the natural beauty of the earth or its inhabitants. So he set out to farm organically on a little stretch of land next to the Skagit River in the Cascade Mountains of Washington. Today Cascadian Farm has grown beyond our original farm, but we haven’t forgotten our roots. The home farm is still a productive organic farm dedicated to educating and inspiring the thousands of visitors that stop by each year. AgFARMation: Native wild bees such as bumble bees (Bombus spp.) are particularly effective pollinators of blueberry flowers. When their habitat needs are met on the farm and in the surrounding landscape they can make a significant contribution to crop pollination.
4
2018 Skagit Valley Festival of Family Farms
Researchers have suggested that bumble bees are twelve times more efficient in their pollination of blueberries on a bee-for-bee basis because of their tolerance of cool, damp conditions and their ability to ‘buzz pollinate’ or ‘sonicate’ blueberry flowers.
