After wrapping up another summer of warm weather activities, Skagit Valley’s farmers and hobby gardeners are beginning to reap the rewards of their harvests while the rest of us celebrate the fertile soils’ bounty by eating cheap roadside corn and other gastronomic treasures. You have to love the fall--a time of foggy mornings, sunny afternoons, (360) 416-1350 www.skagitcounty.net/parks and cool crisp evenings—perfect weather “Creating Community through People, for a hiking and biking the local parks while colorful leaves drop from the Parks and Programs” canopies above. As the sun falls in the lower evening sky, the trees glow in chlorophyll effervescence. The Douglas Squirrels become possessively vocal, From the scolding two legged intruders as they Director’s Chair prance from limb to limb in search for Director Brian Adams, coniferous cones, deciduous nuts Skagit County Parks and Recreation and other forest canopy booty.
For the squirrels, it’s the time of the year to stash their plunder as they prepare to hunker in before the dormancy of winter takes hold. Yes the fall. There is no better time of the year to visit Howard Miller Steelhead Park to stay in one of our camping cabins and watch as the salmon make their pilgrimage up the fifty mile trek to our campground. You may even get to see one of the resident eagles swoop down and talon a fish. While staying at Steelhead Park make sure to make a day trip to Rockport State Park for a walk amongst the mammoth old growth stand of trees. A carpet of freshly fallen maple leaves will provide a colorful path underfoot for your humble journey under a towering cathedral of green spires. 9137-001
